Guten morgen meine kleine.
Good weekend? Shit weekend? Mediocre weekend? Do tell, unless of course you have nothing interesting or amusing to say, in which case by all means keep it to yourself, thanks.
I walked along the canal to Angel this morning. Normally I get a bus then a tube to get there, and was interested to see that it's only five mins slower on foot. Now my buttocks and thighs ache. Nice mental image for you all.
Alt: Anything exciting happening this (short) week?
Alt alt: I read this morning that in Austria they are bringing in ‘alco-locks’ for the cars of convicted drink-drivers: a kind of breathalyser-activcated entry system. Despite the rubbish name that seems to me like something that should be on all cars. What do you think? EDIT I feel this way about speed limiters like they have on lorries - why on earth isn't the fitting of limiters to prevent speeding a standard practice in all vehicles? Why is it even possible to speed? The cynic in me wonders if the revenue from tickets is the answer.
Alt alt alt: Reply 'Yes. You are a cunt' if you are an active homosexual riddled with communicable diseases.

Any body parts floating in the canal?
Alt: leaving daughter with a babysitter for the first time to take my wife out for dinner.

Yes a good weekend, I attended a thoroughly lovely wedding on Saturday and spent yesterday chilling and eating the best Thai food I have eve had.
Sounds like a nice walk, I wish I had that option.
Alt: not much, catching up with friends, packing for going away at the weekend.

I saw someone on the tube last week who looked a lot like you, same look anyway.
His facial hair was pretty cool, not saying it's better than yours, not sure if thats possible, but it wasn't worst. He basicly had a thin line following his upper jaw line, is the best way I can describe it.

Although he doesn't make clear whether it is the anterior lower jawline or the posterior lower jawline.

I've never worked out, in the UK, why they can have cars that can go 120mph when the speedlimit is 80 (or whatever it is).
10 over, 20 over even 30 over I can understand, sometimes you need to GRRRR ZOOOOOOOM past someone or out the way. The only exception to this should be registered vichales like MI5 people. It seems like common sense to me.

I saw the most awesome dog this weekend, got some really nice clothes, found a crepe place that is really good, did a bit of cooking, hooked up with Ma', worked more on my Srs Bzns Plnz, went to the park for a bit... generally I had a nice day. Why allow anybody to have any sort of control of their cars?
Just have them driven by computer and navigated via GPS. Why allow anybody to do anything at all? There are laws, people accept them because they're responsible adults, or they don't and are forced to live with the consequences.

There is a rather large difference
between treating people as responsible adults, that are capable of controlling a vehicle that may accidentally inflict injury and allowing people access to equipment that is specifically designed to kill people.

Technical answer:
A potential answer, what I've just thought of, is due to gearing. You need to have access to power in your top gear for overtaking on motorways etc. In order to have access to this power, your gear ratio needs to be relatively long in order to generate the torque necessary to accelerate. This will mean that there's still a relatively large amount of gear left and so your top speed is significantly higher than your cruising speed.
This is why a car's built with a much higher top speed than the maximum speed limit in your country, not why you don't have a limiter installed.

I'm going to bring this up:
www.b3ta.com/questions/offtopic/post1576090
Now, interestingly, if you look at the stats, it shows you an activity graph which shows that basically nobody voted on Sunday, and of the voting that happened on saturday, it occured at a rate of pretty much one vote an hour. Now, given that the poll only allows you to vote once an hour, that means some sad bastard has been logging back in every hour just to post a vote.
For a period of about four hours of saturday morning, that sad bastard was me, voting for options 3 and 1. So, who else was doing it?

No, not at all, I thought that was a really funny joke.
See, now that reads sarcastically too, but it wasn't meant to be. I really did do a proper laugh.

I didn't do any running this weekend as I had to move offices on saturday
and then I had a cheese and wine party on saturday night so I didn't want to do anything at all on sunday. It's starting to piss me off just what a time commitment it is, and that's even with me dropping back to a half marathon instead of a full one.
EDIT - I'm being contrite because I would hate for you to get very upset with me for being sarcastic on the internet or not thanking you profusely enough.

8 miles last weekend. I was meant to do 8 this weekend but didn't
next weekend is 10, then 10 the following weekend, then I'm gonna try twelve. Then I'm only gonna try 7 the weekend after that as it's the last big run before the half marathon.

Alt Alt
They fit them in California to the ignition if you have "three strike" DUIs.
Answer about limiters? becuase I can legally take my car to Germany if I want and drive it at 150, and a limiter would prevent that. There's also a common sense issue regarding overtaking but it's tricky to justify if people are going to be Nazi about speeding.

I'm safer driving at 100 than 75% of the people on the road in this country are driving at 50
Turns out that's a fucking useless defence in court, though.

It also transpires that something like 80%* of the public believe theey are better than average at driving
the mathematically possibility of this is lost on people
*totally made up number but it is certainly something over 50%

yes, but the cost of the course was about the same as the saving on my first year of insuarnce
also the course is only 2 sessions maybe to practice some motorway driving etc that you can't do as a learner. this 12 years ago so i doubt it makes a jot of difference now

I've done various car control courses
and rally and track stuff, but I won't touch IAM qualifications because at least two of things they teach you are arguably bad practice at best and extremely dangerous at worst.

they teach you to drive in silence
no radio, no conversation - because distractions are bad. Horseshit. You need to be able to focus on different levels, certain parts of driving should be backround instinct. Excessive distraction is bad, of course, but if you need to focus that hard to drive and avoid accidents you shouldn't drive at all.
And they still teach passing the wheel, which is a lethal thing to do if you lose control of a car. Always one hand or the other locked at a fixed position, so that you can pull the wheel back to straight without thinking or looking.

It's not shuffling so much, although that is retarded
IAM say your hands should be in a fixed position relative to the wheel - 10 to 2 or whatever. If you don't want to die on fire in a hedge, hold at least one of your hands fixed ON the wheel.

I'm seriously considering taking an advanced driver's course.
I love everything about cars including driving them quickly. I want to get a rear wheel drive car, but the way they behave isn't at all intuitive compared to front wheel drive. I don't want to not be confident in my ability to control the thing.
I also want start rallying.

rear wheel drive cars are easier to drive than FWD by a mile
rear wheel drive cars ARE intuitive. It's front wheel drive that isn't.

What I mean is, if you start sliding, your instinct is to take your foot off the accelerator
in a FWD car, that'll counteract the understeer, in a RWD car, it'll aggravate the oversteer.

chances are
that in a modern RWD car there are enough gadgets on there to stop teh back end going all over the place... that said I did enjoy the icey conditions in mine... You do get used to it very quickly

not necessarily
a lot of RWD cars have lift-off oversteer. Accelerating in a car throws the weight back, which often improves rear end grip in a RWD. Particularly true of things like 911s. Of course, if you hit the accelerator too hard you might make the rears spin, which does bugger up grip.
I guess it depends on how you got your instincts, though - I guess I was lucky in that my first car was RWD.

That's what I mean, if your back end goes in a RWD car
and you lift off on instinct, the weight shifts forward and the back end goes out further, usually resulting in a spin.

Or if you mash your foot onto the accelerator thaen the back wheels will spin and you'll spin
so should accelerate or ease off, it's so confusing

Having only driven a rear wheel car once I can't say I noticed a massive difference
I reckon most people would only notice the difference if you were trying to do something a bit more taxing that driving up and down the motorway.

mine is rear wheel drive
you notice a BIG difference in snow/ice. and once when it was slippery wet and i was being a twat on a roundabout (although in my defence it turned out the rear tyres were bald).

although getting the back end out in an SLK is a fair effort.
just sitting in the driver's seat is usually enough to turn your right foot gay.

player of the season for the mens first - broken thumb, mens seconds - broken ankle, mens thirds - stitches in his face etc etc. the women were unscathed. so either hockey is dangerous or men are worse at it?!

damages more and harder to get out of the way.

this makes me constitutionally incapable of either checking whether tyres are bald or changing them.
