Gaylords.
So, it’s Independence Day in the good old You Ess Eh.

I like America, I like Americans on the whole, and their contribution to the world has been outstanding in many areas, from science to music and beyond. But they’ve also done some rather suspect things, haven’t they?

Overall, though I am a fan. Are you? If not, why not?

Alt: do shut up, there’s a dear.

I like America, myself.
Some of my very best friends in the world are american. They're also weirdos I met on the internet, which might explain why they're slightly more intelligent than your average pillar box.

Today is my mum's birthday, fact fans. She is not american. Nor is she Tom Cruise, as far as I know.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:23, Reply)
She fucking is, you know.

They gave the world Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway
which excuses a hell of a lot of stuff but, on the other hand, I find their politics objectionable, their world view inexcusable and their insularity unbelievable.

On the whole I am ambivalent. I really wish they weren't so heavily indoctrinated in the old "USA! USA! USA!" business. A lot of the Americans I have met though have been highly educated and embarrassed by the same things I dislike.

Their patriotism borders on xenophobia
Those people that make an effort to educate themselves and travel are far more open-minded and easy to get along with, same as people everywhere. Being in the US for any length of time and meeting those people that aren't interested in broadening their horizons is...disturbing.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:31, Reply)
They're no different from people from, say, Bolton.

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:33, Reply)

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:55, Reply)
The worst thing is the religious fundamentalism or "deep christianity" as it's sometimes known as.
I turned down the chance to move to Atlanta and I am glad that I did. However I'd have happily moved to Seattle or San Diego. On the whole I like the states, but the level of religion disturbs me.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:28, Reply)
one of my closest friends is American and I love her to death.
She gets embarrased by all the stereotypes of america though, and then goes and does half the stereotypes herself. Silly billy. But she's cute and sweet, so I forgive her that.

Overall though, I'm not sure I'm a fan. I don't like the lack of separation of church and state, or their politics.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:32, Reply)

I bloody love America, its people and (a lot of) its music.
Also many of its TV programmes and films. They get many, many points from me for consistently producing great bands in the 90s while we were churning out the most creatively devoid shite in the history of the universe, then merrily ignoring cutns like Gallagher and Williams when they tried to sell records across the pond.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:33, Reply)
You cutn.

I guarantee you that for every 90s American band you can cite as an embarrassment,
I can come up with a much, much worse 90s British band.

Before we start I should point out that I get to use Oasis a hundred times.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:47, Reply)
Maybe true
But the Brits win with the 60's and 70's bands
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 10:48, Reply)
Yeah, probably
but I didn't have to live through the music of the 60s and 70s and was able to revisit and cherry-pick at my leisure. I'm still considering suing Radio 1 for mental scarring inflicted during my teens.

I'm not arguing that either country is better than the other. My point is that, during that period particularly, there was a great bouncing back and forth of ideas and influences in both directions across the Atlantic, producing great results on both sides.

The country is beautiful, and generally unspoiled. I don't like the increasing goddines of all though. When I was first there in 1989, it was fine, but when I went back a dozen years later, it was rather in your face. I expect it is much worse now.

They recognise scientology as a religion
They have Mormons
They make laws based on religion
They have schools that refuse to teach evolution
They think Jesus rode a dinosaur
They think Jesus was white
They Think Jimi Hendrix was white

The same Merkin idiot that thought Phil Lynott was African American asked me why we don't celebrate 4th of July, She had a point there, why don't was celebrate over 200 years of seperation from those twats.

I also told her about how I once woke up and went downstairs to find a stranger asleep on the sofa and how funny it was that he had got the wrong house whilst drunk and passed out on the sofa. We made him breakfast and when his mate across the street woke up and let him in he left. Merkin said to me "he'd be dead here, my dad would have just shot him whilst he was asleep, gotta protect your property"

Whilst there are some good Merkins and so good things come out of Merka, overall Merka is shit.

Guy Fawkes, also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 11:07, Reply)
If The catholics had succeeded they would have oppressed the protestants, so it wouldn't have been a victory for freedom
plus they would have had European support, meaning we may have seen greater influence from the continent, and no one likes that, except Kroney

The oppression of any religious type is something to be celebrated. I am against religious tolerance because I am against tolerating stupidity. Stupid people need to be shown the error of their ways and educated.

I am arrogant enough to think that people that believe in an invisible sky wizard are stupid, yes.
That said, there are intelligent, stupid people. My Aunt for example has three degrees from Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol. She also believes in God. I'm sure Intelligence is based on your ability to work things out. I think you can be good at that and still be stupid.

They are not a bad bunch. They are just like us.

Most of the whooping morons you see on TV go about their daily lives with no thought of anyone else except how to pay their rent and bills. They are then asked their opinion about some world affair and they sound like cretins, which may be fair.

Go to Congleton and ask someone what, say, LIBOR means and I doubt many could answer. I doubt many could tell you who the Home Secretary is.
