Following on from the last thread
I just realised I have no clue what the Moomins are, nor Dogtanian. What do you have no clue about that everyone else seems to?

Alt Q: Club, pub or night in?

Edit: also the popular page seems to be going a bit strange
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:40, 209 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
you don't know what Dogtanian is....
you suck

I don't know anything about most popular modern bands. People insist that I will have heard something by some band and it is very rarely the case.

Alt Q: night in.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:41, Reply)
same with the popular bands
but with Dogtanian it sounds shit
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:47, Reply)
You're missing nothing with Dogtanian.
It was utterly shit; I can't understand why it's looked back on with so much fondness among people of a certain age.

Alt: All three, depending on mood. Possibly less club and more pub though.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:41, Reply)
Probably because it introduced people to the story of The Three Musketeers, one of the greatest stories written
and brilliantly filmed in two parts starring Oliver Reed and Michael York
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:44, Reply)
I love reading the Three Musketeers
because they were drunken violent louts.

and I love those films
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:46, Reply)
whut?
Why not just watch the film/ read the book? I'm assuming it's a dog version
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:46, Reply)
it is an animated dog version
it was brilliant though
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:47, Reply)
You are wrong on that assertion, Vippers.

(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:51, Reply)
Have to agree with you
the animation was pants.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:04, Reply)
It used to annoy me
that because animators were making stuff for kids that they thought they could get away with really shit animation because "they're only kids; they won't notice."

I FUCKING DID, RIGHT?
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:09, Reply)
And the theme tune
Gah!
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:24, Reply)
I've just remembered it
It is now going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Argh!

Still, at least it's replaced the Lee Longlands jingle that was previously stuck there.

Leave it, leave it to Lee, leave it to Lee Longlands (Longlands!)
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:41, Reply)
you're so right
And I get to watch them all again with my nephew

You poor cunt.

(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:16, Reply)
Because as a child of the age of about six or seven
I hadn't heard of the book. Then I watched Dogtanian and then I got bought the puffin version of the three musketeers and then when I was older I bought myself the penguin translation of the original story.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:54, Reply)
thicko
imagine that, a child needing to be introduced gently into the world of grown-up reading.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:58, Reply)
I read the book before that fucking travesty of a cartoon even aired.
And yes, Amberl - it was Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds. Thirteen episides of badly animated, badly dubbed eyeball rape.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:48, Reply)
I really don't feel like I missed anything then
because the book was fucking amazing
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:49, Reply)
Nothing at all. It was fucking bent.

(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:08, Reply)
Dumas was superb
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favourite books. Dogtanian was a massive heap of shit, at school we used to bully a boy until he cried because he said he liked it once.

Michael York's face and voice make me feel really queasy. Ditto Chubby Checker. I genuinely feel sick now just thinking about the pair of them.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:08, Reply)
There'll be a embedded photo of both below me within 2 mins.

I don't get films based in forrest or casinos.
Depends on the mood, I quite like a bar where I can have cocktails though.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:44, Reply)
really?
I love films in forests and casinos
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:46, Reply)
I like Forest Gump?

(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:47, Reply)
no

(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:48, Reply)
Yeh'.
I find casinos, in films, borring. Esspeically like James Bond when they're playing cards and nobody is saying anything but giving everyone else weird looks.

And forests, I saw a good one last night, "The Forth Kind", but I can't relate to small american towns that are around forests.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:58, Reply)
The Fourth Kind
is awful Gonz. Watch Rounders if you want to appreciate card playing films or Cool Hand Luke.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:06, Reply)
I really liked it, spooked me quite a bit.
There is a film called Suicide Kings which has a few card-game sections, that I quite liked

I'll check it out. I would also recommend Intacto. Brilliant film about luck.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:23, Reply)
Rounders is a great film

(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:24, Reply)

You were lookin' for that third three, but you forgot that Professor Green folded on Fourth Street and now you're representing that you have it. The DA made his two pair, but he knows they're no good. Judge Kaplan was trying to squeeze out a diamond flush but he came up short and Mr. Eisen is futilely hoping that his queens are going to stand up. So like I said, the Dean's bet is $20
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:35, Reply)
I saw it late one night randomly
one of those great discoveries when you are a bit baked, on your own.

Same as El Mariachi.

Bah. I've just been to try and buy a rounders bat & ball for our camping trip tomorrow.
The only "sports" shop near my work is the Mike Ashley owned Sports Direct or whatever it's called this week. They have mountains and mountains of apallingly tacky "leisurewear" but vitually nothing in the way of actual sports equipment.

Also the staff must be specially spawned from spacka spunk.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 14:06, Reply)
Go to Font.
Dunno if they have them down south, but cocktails are £2 every night and they're awesome.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:51, Reply)
They have one in Brighton.
I'd sell anything to have one in London :(
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:55, Reply)
There's one in most churches.

(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:10, Reply)
Sweet !
I've heard of that one, is there one in Birmingham? I don't think you could get £2 cocktails anywhere in London, I've seen tap water charged more than that.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:57, Reply)
I don't think so.
I only know of the two in Manchester and one in Liverpool.

Moomins were pretty poor
Although a lad at work recently had no idea who Joe 90 was, that was a bit of a shock (he's 9 years older than me).

The weirdest one is that none of my friends at all have heard of Penny Crayon!

Alt Q: Pub followed by night in for me, unless I'm with the right people, in which case it's night in, pub, club, night in, which ends up with me being paraletic. Went to Cathouse in Glasgow, got absolutely messy, nearly ended up in a fight with another drunk lad, whoops!

Lord of the Rings was really borring to me, I saw the first one because it was all like 'wow'.
But when it came to watching it in the pictures, it was fucking dull and pathetic. "OH GANDOLF, I CAN'T BEILIVE I'M STILL ALIVE, I LOVE YOU GANDOLF, TAKE ME WITH YOUR WIZZARD'S STICK" with 20 minutes of [that video effect where all the light is bright white and everything is glossy] with nothing interesting at all.

Then the second one I feel asleep in at the pictures and missed the one interesting scene, with the war with the tree men.

Didn't even attempt the third.

Harry Potter and Inception is ace. I ain't seen Avatar yet, but I don't hold up much hope, to much forrest stuff, but it's made up for with neon, I love neon.

I used to know most of the stupid rhymes they said when they turned into things
or used powers.

but then I used to know the words to almost every kids tv theme around.

I have an incredible memory for lyrics.

Incredible cartoon, that.
My brother has the lot on DVD.

I downloaded it all
not got round to watching much yet

I wouldn't mind watching that again
at the time the story kind of baffled me but the 2-in-1 sword/gun weapons were cool.

And my own answer to alt q

Pub. Pub. Pub. Pub. Pub. Pub. Pub.
I am too old for clubbing. My grey hair shows up blue under the UV lights .

I never watched the A Team. I know it existed, but I don't remember it being on when I was a kid
Same goes for Baywatch.

I also never watched Thunderbirds so that whole Tracey Island Blue Peter thing was lost on me.

I loved the Poddington Peas and Tom & Jerry. Cartoon Time with Rolf Harris was brilliant. And does anyone remember Ovid Video?
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:55, Reply)
Ovid Video was bonkers
I can almost remember the tune.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 12:57, Reply)
that show was fucked up

was it?
I just remember it being about snakes in the jungle. I think. Ok I don't really remember it at all.

Down at the bottom of the garden...
Among the birds and the bees.
There live a lot of little people,
They're called The Poddington Peas

Thanks a lot. That'll be in my head ALL afternoon now.

There's Creepea, Black Eye-Pea and Dumpea.

I don't remember that!
Do you remember one about a guy who had to get seven crystals or something and he kept having to face pirates and stuff. The bad pirate only had one eye. I can barely remember it

But the puke scene and the sex scene were weird and gross.

At least Baywatch had tits.

We watched that religiously
then someone pointed out that despite the liberal use of firearms and explosives no-one ever got killed/maimed/wounded/anything more serious than disheveled. Kind of annoyed me after that.

how can you not know the moomins?
I went to the moomin museum in Finland (it was shit) and realised that although I knew who the moomins were, I had never seen them on TV or read any of the books.

Also, Dogtanian was ok, but I much preferred Albert the 5th Musketeer ('He's short, he's cool, he's nobody's fool, he's Albert the fifth musketeer!'). And Sharky and George, Crimebusters of the sea were also fb.

I think my knowledge of kids TV is pretty poor though, as I wasn't allowed to watch it when I was younger, but watched CBBC when my brother and sister did, so I'm about 7 years behind my actual age in children's TV reminiscing.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:08, Reply)
The only kids programs I have any idea about
or know of are Bear in the Big Blue House,Power-rangers and YuGiOh

Original Power Rangers was awesome though, I was Jason!

Bet you were Kimberley?
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:15, Reply)
My little sister watched BITBBH
so I saw some of it.

Nope. I spent my time prancing around claiming to be the red power ranger (don't remember the name)

That was Jason
I have no shame in remembering that

I have a beatboxing Biz Markie alarm clock, I've just remembered.

I bought it in New York and my then girlfriend refused to be woken up by Biz every day so when the batteries ran out I never replaced them.

I'm going to do that later.

The entire modern fucking world.
I don't 'get' the appeal of any of it.

I only seem to go to clubs if I'm paid to play records these days: this has been the case for a good ten years now. I do like a nice pub - especially in the daytime during winter if they have a real fire.

But my favourite of all is a night in with food and a few close friends.

That's given me a vision of you sitting in a pub somewhere in a tiny village outside Keighley
by the fire, with a pint of beer in one hand, the other hand cupping your pipe, flatcap resting at a jaunty angle, and whippet slumped dozily across your feet, as you explain to one of the locals in a slow, patronising Englishman-talking-to-a-foreigner tone of voice that you can't understand a fucking word he's saying.

The first Highlander is magnificent.
It's up there with The Running Man. I have no higher praise.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2010, 13:36, Reply)

Agree with you on this. I much preferred Running Man to Total Recall. They were the first two Arnie films I saw. The Highlander sequels were awful.

They should have burnt out rather than fade away....

Total Recall
is one of those films I have seen a stupid number of times, like Predator and Die Hard. I have seen The Running Man but I don't think I really gave it my full attention, may revisit.

Some of the best dialogue ever in that film.
and YAPHET KOTTO! Unbeatable.

Since children's cartoons have been raised
I have been accused of sounding like the brightly coloured elephant from "Charlie Chalk."

Alt Q: Pub or night in depending on various parameters. I've never been particularly drawn to clubs. (Read: I really don't understand the appeal)

Edit: Oddly enough, I ended up discussing the recent Political Correction of kids' cartoons - apparently scenes from things as innocuous Tom and Jerry have been edited where anyone was seen smoking, Babar has been edited because the rivalry between the elephants and rhinos might be construed as promoting racism, and even the more contemporary (and there probably shite anyway) Dennis the Menace cartoon series has been toned down so it wouldn't look like its main protagonist was bullying Walter the Softie and his Chums for their girliness and latent homosexuality. (I'm fairly sure they've also deleted the scene from Rainbow where Bungle gets drunk and bitch-slaps Zippie around the kitchen)
