From a young age I had swimming lessons
Got to the point I could get the rubber brick off the bottom of the pool and make a float out of a pair of PJ's.

I don't think I know anyone who can't swim.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 14:51, Reply)
^ this
as far as I remember nearly every secondary school I've been to had it's own pool, and even a few of the primary ones
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 14:53, Reply)
Even the thick kids could swim.
(Granted, my school didn't have its own pool, but it was a short coach trip to the Dolphin leisure centre).

Who would deny their child the chance to learn? Or even discourage them from learning.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 14:55, Reply)
I find it quite weird
that people would risk their children drown rather than give them lessons
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 14:57, Reply)
To quote that BBC story
>In focus groups for the study, Prof Irwin said many black parents who could not swim evinced sentiments like: "My children are never going to learn to swim because I'm scared they would drown."<

Some people are too stupid to have kids.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 14:59, Reply)
it's bizarre
my mother can't swim, but she made sure that all her children could
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:01, Reply)
What didn't your mum learn at the same time as her kids?

(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:09, Reply)
she literally can't
she's tried loads of times, got proper lessons and so on but just can't do it
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:10, Reply)
some people just literally can't swim
it's odd.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:17, Reply)
Stuart Lubbock, for example.

(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:21, Reply)
Nah, he could
it's just difficult to breathe when there's a cock in your mouth.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:23, Reply)
...and a chairleg up your arse.

(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:36, Reply)
My nephew has always been very lean and wiry. I can't remember him ever having puppy fat.
When learning to swim he always had difficulty floating and we assume it's because of this.

he's a sailor and we were going on the ship
he said we had to learn how to swim. It's not as cruel as it sounds, it was very shallow water.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:15, Reply)
Years ago my aunt said she read...
...that black people were not 'built for swimming' due to greater bone density - which somehow seemed quite feasible.
My uncle suggested that their arses were too big which seemed a tad racist.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:07, Reply)
Fat floats,
so having a disproportionately fat arse would presumably work a bit like putting armbands on your ankles.

When I was a young 'un,
I was so scrawny that I had real trouble staying afloat. I used to do pretty well in short-distance races though - I'd do a length of crawl without coming up for air.

Then I'd have to cling on to the edge, gasping, for about five minutes.
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:16, Reply)
same as after a short walk now then?

I think because I am tall* I would reach the end before my competitors.

*I'm around 7'
(, Fri 3 Sep 2010, 15:30, Reply)
I've never been able to swim - because neither of my parents could they never taught me
When I became a dad I got both of my kids enrolled in swimming lessons. Both of them earned their 2km swimming badges when they were 9.

If I'm ever on a boat that goes down, hopefully they'll be able to save their old dad.

*crosses fingers*
