Morning all!
I'm a little tired today, went on a downloading spree last night, and ended up watching Four Lions, Iron Man 2, and the first episode of Sherlock (The TV Series). Iron Man was exactly as I expected, good fun, but that's about It.

However, Sherlock and Four Lions had me in absolute hysterics! So, what was the last film/tv series to have you laughing til you hurt?

Alt Q: What's the film that you hate, but everyone else seems to like? Mine are Superbad, Something About Mary and War Of The Worlds

Alt Q: Four Lions

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:22, Reply)
Seriously?

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:38, Reply)
Yeah seriously. Hated it.

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:45, Reply)
Fair enough
Have you ever watched any Brass Eye?
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:57, Reply)
yes, that's what surprised me. I love Brass Eye but I hated the film
I just found it distasteful. I think they lost me when they blew up the crow. The only thing I found remotely amusing was when they convinced that guy to start jogging like a spastic because he saw them doing it. Oh and "fuck mini babybel!"
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:08, Reply)
I was a little upset by the crow being blown up, for obvious reasons
But I still found it fucking funny. Mind you, I found Monkey Dust too gruesome when I first watched it, and now I think it's the funniest thing that ever appeared on BBC3. To each their own, I guess.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:09, Reply)
I love Monkey Dust
I love the guy who lies about his whereabouts and the Meatsafe Murderer only I never done it.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:22, Reply)
In the later series
they introduced the paedofinder general, who never fails to make me piss myself with laughter. It's a crying shame they never issued series 2 and 3 on DVD.

Thinking about it though, they had their own suicide bomber sketch in the later series - which I thought was probably the inspiration for Four Lions. Not quite as near the knuckle as Chris Morris' effort, but still bloody funny.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:25, Reply)
I don't really watch enough films or television to answer either of these!

Going on holidays
And I haven't changed my opinion since!
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:31, Reply)
I meant more day trips
obviously holiday was the best time ever.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:35, Reply)
Ah, OK
Probably the biannual model railway exhibition that my dad used to take me to. He didn't tell me where we were going the first time (I'd have been about 6) and I was incredibly pleased when we entered a hall full of train sets!
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:38, Reply)
my dad had a model railway running around our loft, it was brilliant.
He used to spend ages painting the little houses and stuff for the scenery.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:46, Reply)
I had one too, as a kid
but I grew out of it when I reached my mid teens. It's all still in boxes up my parents' loft though.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:48, Reply)
I quite like the idea of little model painting but the trains don't hold any interest for me now
When we moved my dad was gutted to have to take it all down.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:52, Reply)
I'll bet that guy who was on Derren Brown's programme last night
has nightmares about trains.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:57, Reply)
I didn't see it, what happened?
lots of people have been slating it.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:07, Reply)
He picked a meek, shy bloke
and got him to MTFU over a month, culminating in taking control of an aeroplane (actually a simulator but he didn't know). Part of if involved him putting the bloke in a strait jacket and tying him to a railway line, with a train coming. He escaped in the nick of time.

Obviously there would have been some sort of trickery involved, but he was still shitting himself!
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:37, Reply)
I thoroughly enjoyed watching it

from the age of 13: driving tractors, prior to this: anything with an engine

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:40, Reply)
Tractors scared me when I was younger
their wheels are just so big.

Now that I'm older they just piss me off when I get stuck behind them on the road.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:47, Reply)
I've never had strong feelings about them!
Round here, farmers are usually pretty good at pulling over to let traffic past. It's the old biddies in their Micras who piss me off, pootling along at 40mph on a perfectly good road, with a queue of angry commuters behind.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:50, Reply)
It depended which farmer it was where I lived
the younger guys usually pulled over but the grumpy old twatbags never did, no matter how many people they were holding up. Dicks.

I hated Sunday drivers, I used to work a double shift in the pub and I'd have an hour to nip home and have a break between shifts, but I would always get stuck behind some stupid old couple who would drive at 20 and stop to point at bunnies, making a 5 minute journey take 20 minutes.

I love living in the city now.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:54, Reply)
Cities irritate me beyond measure, when trying to do a journey
It takes so long to get anywhere! Even tractors move at a faster average speed.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:55, Reply)
I walk everywhere in the city
or get the tram. I only rob Wiggy's car when we're leaving the city. I see so many angry commuters beeping at each other and driving like dicks in the mornings it makes public transport look slightly less horrific.

I walk to work accompanied by the magpies so it's a pretty stress-free journey.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:58, Reply)
If it's a short enough distance to walk
it's definitely the best way. I live nearly 30 miles from work but it's only about a 35 minute drive.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:59, Reply)
I just wish the trains were more reliable so that more people used them
it pisses me off how many people drive when they don't need to. I wanted the congestion charge to come into Manchester so that they would improve the transport links but all those people who drive the 5 mile journey to work voted against it.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:05, Reply)
Was (still am) a petrolhead - tractors were the first thing I was allowed to drive
I did buy my first car when I was 14 though, although my parents sold it 4 months later when they finally found out I had bought it & was driving myself around (including to school).
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:51, Reply)
you're lucky you didn't get stopped by the police
or hit anyone.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:54, Reply)
I only drove locally on rural roads, the car was roadworthy and I didn't tear around like a boy racer.

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:00, Reply)
doesn't make it ok
All the lads in the pub used to drink drive on the local roads because there weren't any coppers.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:04, Reply)
I didn't drink & drive. I'm not condoning what I did either.

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:10, Reply)
sorry I shouldn't be so grumpy
I have to deal with people at work who break motoring laws all the time so it annoys me more than it should.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:15, Reply)
understandable

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:18, Reply)
I loved playing with Mecanos
specially if they had engines. It took a while for my parents to agree and buy me the first one, as they thought I (as a girl) wouldn't like it, and would be asking my father for help all the time. Bah.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:03, Reply)
Going to the beach
But I hated the coming back, walking uphill back home full of sand and salt.

But the beach was great. Smelling the sea and feeling starving was all the same thing.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:02, Reply)
I used to hate coming back from the swimming pool
sitting in the car with damp hair and crinkly fingers, stinging eyes and smelling of chlorine, yuck.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:06, Reply)
Yep, I know
And I hated having to shower at the swimming pool too. The showers were opened, so we would keep our swimming wear on and, you know, there are bits of your body that you can't wash properly without getting naked and without looking a bit rude in front of a lot of women.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:10, Reply)
Alt q: Napoleon Dynamite
Everyone seemed to love it, but I have absolutely no idea why.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:33, Reply)
I'm the same on this

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:34, Reply)
And me.
It was ok but not great.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:53, Reply)
yeah this, it was ok
but the way all the emo kids built it all up made it disappointing.

I'm still not sold on Anchorman either. It's true that the more you watch it the funnier it gets, but I think you have to be in a room full of people who love it to enjoy it.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:55, Reply)
I still don't particularly laugh at the film
But if we sit round, and talk about it, it sounds like the funniest film ever.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:58, Reply)
yeah I think that's it, everyone sitting around quoting it makes it seem hilarious
but when you watch it it's a bit cringeworthy. There are some quality lines in it though, I think my favourite is "60% of the time it works every time"
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:59, Reply)
Anchorman slays me
even alone. ND was alright but not amazing. Step Brothers is better than both.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:59, Reply)
me too
I love Napolean Dynamite though

I particularly love the bit in Anchorman when he finishes playing the flute and shouts "Hey Aqualung!" because it's from a Jethro Tull song
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:17, Reply)
You really have a problem spelling 'Napoleon' don't you?
I have this with 'Francisco'.

Great news re Jim Jones gigs, eh? I missed the LP launch party last Thursday due to rank stupidity, but am buying tickets today for the Scala show on Oct 21st. It's one of my favourite venues and not too far from home either.

*does Tim Henman 'COME ON!' gesture*
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:21, Reply)
it is great news
they are playing in The Cavern, which is suitably seedy and underground. It is going to be fucking awesome.

I need the new album so I can fully prepare myself.

Don't turn up to the bash too massive-drugged-over, please.

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:17, Reply)
Jethro Tull were pretty ace
My favourite part of Anchorman is he when he is talking to Baxter and goes "you ate a whole wheel of cheese?, I'm not even angry I'm impressed"

loved Juno

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 8:46, Reply)
it was just cringing
and want-to-be smart and funny, while actually just being boring.

But then I think Judd Apatow films are load of wank, so I'm obviously out of touch
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:57, Reply)
Brasseye was magnificent in so many ways.
I'd interested in seeing Four Lions but shall wait for my brother's review first, as we have near-identical taste.

alt q: don't remember the name of the film, but it was with Cameron Diaz too. All my friends were crying with laugh, and I just couldn't see the point. I'll dig the name in a second.

Minor spelling correction, FYI
It's titles.

Although I do rather like tittles!
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:02, Reply)
Thank you
This doubbling consonants should have a rule or a guideline or something. I'm always confused/confussed.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:08, Reply)
If you follow the rough guidelines of
if the vowel is long, like the i in smiled, then it's one consonant. If the vowel is short, like the i in filled, then it's two.

So the long sound of u is in confused, the short sound is in fussed.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:11, Reply)
Oh, dear
I can't tell appart between long and short sounds. We only have 5 sounds for vowels and those are the ones that my brain can differenciate. After 5 years here, I still can't tell the difference between beach and bitch. Mark insists on teaching me, and I try, but no, they sound the same.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:15, Reply)
sorry, I know the English language is pretty stupid with all its rules that don't seem to follow any pattern

It's the bit where they turn up at Tom Cruise's parents house, and it turns out everyone is alive and well.

Fucking pathetic.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:25, Reply)
The Tom Cruise WOTW was utter tripe
The old TV series wasn't much better either. Not a patch on the UK series Tripods. That used to have me hiding behind the sofa as a kid
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:08, Reply)
It started off really well I thought,
the storm at the beginning really set me on edge, but then it was just boring. Dakota Fanning was really good though.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:13, Reply)
Scott Pilgrim vs The World made me cinemalol at times
It also made me excitedly shout "YOOOORRRR!", which is a sign of a good movie.

Alt Q: Lost in Translation. I've said it before, but that film is dull as dishwater, yet many people get all up in my grill about it feverishly defending it with a fervor matched by only the greatest Linux or Mac fans.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:10, Reply)
Yes, I know what you mean
I know there is something in LiT that I'm missing, or otherwise, a lot of people are making a lot of noise about a very, very slow film.

And I didn't get the "translation" bit, as they all spoke English, and didn't have any problem to understand each other. I was expecting something quite different.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:13, Reply)
It's a film where nothing happens
Then nothing happens some more.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:15, Reply)
I was waiting

I even attempted to order everything in Spanish
Only problem there was if they assumed I was Spanish, and therefore replied at breakneck speed.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:29, Reply)
Oh, yes, I can see the problem
But very good for trying. Next time you only have to smile and say "más despacio, por favor"
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:35, Reply)
I just said
"Lo siento, solo hablo un poco Espanol".
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:37, Reply)
Wow
That is very good. I'm sure they appreciated it.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:40, Reply)
I looked it up before I went
I think they appreciated it, or I just looked like a proper croissant eater.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:41, Reply)
Hello!
Had a nice holiday?
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:15, Reply)
How do Ma'am!
Had a lovely time thanks, I even got a bit of colour (not all of it red).

I also ate mussels, which I don't normally like. They look like vaginas.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:18, Reply)
They do *laughs*
Which is why I can only eat them with a sauce to disguise the fact.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:19, Reply)
It's not like you even have to squint
They ONLY look like vaginas. Even a Tibetan monk, who's been in isolation for 50 years, would instantly say "That looks like pussy" upon seeing one.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:22, Reply)
it's something I've always thought but never said
it's taken me a while to get my mrs to pluck up the courage to eat them. I think that would put her off.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:22, Reply)
They do, don't they?
Disgusting, but tasting. The mussels, I've never tried vaginas.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:19, Reply)
Haha!

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:20, Reply)
much the same experience

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:21, Reply)
Fishy
I suppose at least with the mussels you can get rid of the beard before putting them in your mouth.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:26, Reply)
You're on top form today : )

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:30, Reply)
It must be the lack of sleep
Maybe I should ask my neighbour to play loud music at night more often.

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:59, Reply)
As I said
I think it's the lack of sleep. And maybe too much time spent here.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:01, Reply)

Oh joy the corrugator has broke AGAIN and we have two and a half week leadtimes.

On the plus side I have chocolate.

Films? Hmm I have a shit taste in everything...
I like District 9 but not a lot of people seem to.
Also I'm not a fan of 2001 a Space Oddity. Think it's overrated. As is a clockwork orange.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:40, Reply)
I missed you too
I agree that 2001 is overrated.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:42, Reply)

Hello, my dear, sweet TGB!
Did you have nice evening yesterday, and a pleasant and restful sleep?
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:51, Reply)
I did thank you darling
I watched mindless TV and ate chocolate and drank wine. I hope your evening was as delightful?
I must confess that tonight one of my guilty pleasures is on TV Cut It in Half. Last week they cut a fire engine in half.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 9:54, Reply)
I cleaned my flat from top-to-bottom,
rewarding but dull.

I ended up shouting at evolution-deniers on the television.

I'll go and think about what I've done.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:09, Reply)
The last film I saw that really made me laugh was "In Bruges"
I had put off watching it for a couple of years because I hate Colin Farrel, but he was brilliant, as was Brendon Gleason and the midget.

Best film i've seen in a long time! Brilliant dialogue.

Alt Q: Most Jim Carrey films.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:00, Reply)
In Bruges is an absolutely superb film
Have you ever seen Boondock Saints?
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:05, Reply)
Boondock Saints is in my top 10
Love that film!
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:07, Reply)
I haven't, but if it is similar to "In Bruges" I will give it a go
"You heeet the Canadian"
"Oi heeet the canadian?"
"Yes, you heeet the canadian"
"THAT'S THE MOTHERFUCKER!"

And: "You're a cunt, you've always been a cunt and you're never going to change apart from becoming more of a cunt and having some more cunty kids"
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:09, Reply)
It'll give you the same sort of laughs
It's similar in the fact they're both very dark, yet silly comedies.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:21, Reply)
boondock saints is brilliant
Billy Connelly rocks, never watched the 2nd one though.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:12, Reply)
It's genius
I really enjoyed it, definitely worth a watch.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:17, Reply)
Has it got the same cast?
I will def get it if is as good as the first.

Willem Defoe stole it for me "THERE WAS A FIRE FIGHT"
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:22, Reply)
Aye, pretty much everyone
Few flashbacks in it, so you get to see Rocco again
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:23, Reply)
getting it

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:27, Reply)
I'll have to pick it up then
I've held off watching it because I heard mixed reviews.

If you like 'In Bruges' I will give it a go.
For you are yourself, a very funny fucker.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:07, Reply)
I thought In Bruges was fucking brilliant also
I am pretty sure you will like it
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:10, Reply)
Ta
I was pleasantly surprised. If you like drugged-up midgets (and lets face it, who doesn't?) you should enjoy it.

It's superb Monty
I'm sure you'll like it.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:19, Reply)
I watched that the other day and I really enjoyed it
I laughed so hard when he said "of course you can't see, I just shot you in the eye with a fucking blank"
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:10, Reply)
I love the bit when he is arguing with the people in the restaurant
the woman picks up a bottle and he goes "A bottle?" and punches her
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:11, Reply)
I loved that bit.
And when he goes "one gay beer for my gay friend and one normal beer for me because I am normal".
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:16, Reply)
Colin Farrel was brilliant, I cant stand the bloke as a rule
but he played it so understated
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:12, Reply)
I thought he did the tormented bit really well
I also thought he was quite good in Phone Booth
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:16, Reply)
god no
that film was horse shit of the highest order
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:17, Reply)
I really liked it
I love Kiefer Sutherland's voice. Fit.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:20, Reply)
Kiefer Sutherland would make a Natwest advert epic
but the film in general was so dull. I paid to watch it in the cinema. I was ashamed.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:21, Reply)
Don't listen to Bobby
It's a great film. I need to watch it again.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:21, Reply)
To be honest not listening to me might be sound advice
my favourite movie of all time is Labyrinth, starring David Bowie. *looks out for Monty*

edit - good hols btw?

Kiefer Sutherland is damn good in it too, very intimidating.

I have just ordered it off play.

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:16, Reply)
Nice one
I saw it on TV a couple of weeks back and ordered it off Amazon the next day. I hadn't bought a DVD in years.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:19, Reply)
I bought it for £3 in Sainsbury's and the next sodding day it came on TV.

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:20, Reply)
It is actually my first blu ray
feels quite cool. I bought a huge fecking telly last week so needed a blu ray player. So got one.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:20, Reply)
From what I've heard, one film that needs seeing in Blu Ray is Saving Private Ryan
The opening scene is meant to be stunning

That of course doesn't make the film any less overrated
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:22, Reply)
When that first came out I hated it
Watched it on channel 5 a few months ago and was weeping like a little girl with a skinned knee. I will buy that too.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:26, Reply)
AA is right on this one
Saving Private Ryan is shit and overrated
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:29, Reply)
I thought so too on my first watch but 2nd time through brilliant.

My brother bought this 50" plasma and it's jsut too big

Not if you sit further away...

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:24, Reply)
Depends on the size of the room
mine is 32 but it's perfect for the room. My mate has a 50 incher (ooer) and it looks great in his house but his house is huge.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:25, Reply)
House is relatively big
and it gets used for films, but apart from that it's not much better than a small one
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:28, Reply)
Can I get that in laminated form?

(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:33, Reply)
If you get Sky HD, it's superb to watch sports and documentaries on
Otherwise, yes, a bit of a waste used only as a TV
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:25, Reply)
mainly for gaming
I;m ashamed to say
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:26, Reply)
No shame in that at all
That's what I meant when I said only as a TV. My friend plays games like HL2 on top resolution on his 30-odd inch TV, just looks incredible.

What console you rocking?
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:27, Reply)
I only use my 32" tv for games and films
I never watch tv (and the aerial on the roof is shit anyway).
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:31, Reply)

I go to sleep with Viva on every night now, fall asleep to 2.5 men or south park and wake up to gash chart music. Can't go wrong.

brand new xbox 360
as mine died the other week. I have basically upgraded everything. Currently rocking ME2 with new dlc and borderlands online. Getting moist about Halo Reach on Tuesday.

I'm gutted
I can't afford Halo Reach for at least another 2 months, it's going to kill me.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:36, Reply)
I never really played the others
Borderlands has opened my eyes to FPS' so HAlo reach looks like the next logical step.

I have landed a really flukey summer job and my commission is epic. I sit here all day make a few calls and take home about 300 quid a week. I'm a fucking student I feel like Branson.

I had a little run through on 3 t'other day in anticipation. Cannot wait for Vegas.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:45, Reply)
I found it a bit too buggy
And I didn't like the fact that while it claims to be non-linear, you still have to do things in a very specific order. I ended up on the ship before I was meant to, and ended up running round clueless for about an hour, getting more and more annoyed.
(, Thu 9 Sep 2010, 10:52, Reply)
the main story had to be done in whack but the beauty was you could avoid it and just go wandering
the wasteland levelling up doing side missions.
