It's already cold here
Since this year is my Finals year I will naturally be spending a lot more time out and about, not doing work and having fun. Bearing that in mind I want to increase my gig attendence. Any suggestions for between October and December gigs that are worth the attending, preferably in London, Oxford or bristol (or possibly Brighton)?

Alt Q: Favourite season and why?

Alt Alt Q: Just for the look of the thing: how soon till we have proper virtual reality?
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 13:40, 308 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
God Speed You Black Emperor in Bristol in December. A few of us are going so if you like them get a ticket.
Alt Q: Torn between Autumn and Winter. Autumn is incredibly pretty and lends itself to great days out. Winter smells different, I really like it. I love those days where you can smell christmas outside and when it snows as well.

Alt Alt Q: No idea about technical stuff. I think it will be a while yet though.

Anson Rooms
Do you have to be a student to get tickets?
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 13:51, Reply)
Nope,
Quite a nice venue as well. Two minutes from the centre or Clifton Village.

edit - which you of course know already. *belms*

It'll be a while before virtual reality is actually around
augmented reality becoming common place in 5-10 years.
Computer games will become more realistic and immersive constantly but that's not exactly virtual reality.

I had someone once come to me with a 'buisness idea' that I simply _have_ to get in behind.
It's basicly a white tredmill with projectors pointed to all the walls, so people can take vertual walks around towns.

She got very angry when I said "What happens when you want to turn left/right?" and "You do know this'll be a very expensive set-up, you wouldn't get it in your average home, where would the income come from?", it was the most retarded buisness proposal I've heard in a long time.

Because of my friendlyness and technical no-how, I find I get a lot of people approaching me with ideas.
Sometimes they're fantastic, sometimes they're rubbish.

Things like I would be talking to a shop owner and someone would over-hear, or a friend of a collegue, anything like that.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:10, Reply)
I know Professor Green's playing Cambridge in October, so is likely touring
If you're into that sort of thing.

Alt Q: Summer because I love the sun, being warm, and girls tend to wear less.
Alt Alt Q: Proper, fully immersive, Holodeck/Matrix VR? Probably never.

In Bristol...
...Motorhead and Belle & Sebastian. (Obviously not on the same line up.)
Alt Q - Spring. Because it is full of hope and cleanses the soul.
Alt Alt Q - Next Tuesday. After Corrie.

I like all seasons I reckon, I like summer cause it's warm and more fun than winter, but I like autumn because of the wind
sorry, wish I could answer the gig question but...you know

I would suggest the London Bash, but you're already there, so no point!

Alt Q: Sadly, due to english weather, I think they're all shit.

Alt alt Q: If you mean topped up with true AI, then we're still years away. Plus AI scares me, how can we be sure Skynet won't actually happen?
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 13:53, Reply)
There's loads of stuff on in Birmingham
And it's only an hour or so on the train. Look here here and here
Alt Q - probably autumn or spring, as you get the most feeling of change. But not if it's raining - clear, cold and crispy autumn days only!

(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:02, Reply)
Much as I love The Hawks,
they’re just not as good as they used to be by a long chalk. Not like Gong who, since Steve Hillage rejoined, are better live now than they have been since the late 70s. The brain-melting projections help with this a great deal.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:04, Reply)
I think Dave "bins are out the back" Brock is the only original member still playing now, isn't he?

(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:06, Reply)
That’s right.
Nik Turner’s Space Ritual is made up entirely of ex-Hawks including legendary naked drummer Terry Ollis. I have to say they were shit last Saturday.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:09, Reply)
Ollis was a legend.
There are several knackered old guys knocking round my department who claim to have jammed with him at various points.

As for Space Ritual, I wasn't particularly impressed with recordings I heard of them. Still, glad to hear Gong were good.

I seem to only like things people hate.

(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:20, Reply)
They are now
but as a 12 year old I thought they were the best thing in the world. I recorded all their videos and concerts off the telly as soon as we got sky and even mimed a cover of Paradise City for a school talent competition with apple juice filled whisky bottles. We thought we were very cool. I still love everything they have done bar the Chinese Democracy.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:20, Reply)
More than a bit. EDIT:
3-4 good tunes. No more. They were a bunch of fucking benders whose only merit was their services to the Doogie Howser industry. No more worthy than similar knob-jockeys Motley Crue – a band who soiled the umlaut as a band-name device for ever, despite the best efforts of Pig Iron.

you need to not be offended by monty not liking some things
because his madness is overshadowed by how good all of the stuff he points me to is.

for instance, he doesn't like Floyd, other than the really early stuff, and I love them. That is insignificant compared to the wonders he has pointed me to, like Bigelf, and Tractor, and Jim Jones Revue
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:37, Reply)
No offence taken at all
but how can he go from 4 to none in a line! I also think Floyd were shit. I'd rather David Gilmour smashed a brick into his teeth than place it in the wall.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:41, Reply)
haha
they're not for everyone. I love his guitar style though, and the feel of the music.

My dad played them to death when I was a kid so I think I got bored of the long intro's which
is why I latched on to Queen, The Boss, Sting and the Police, etc as they were quite poppy and quick. I was too young for prog rock.

my dad was into stuff like The Everly Brothers and Dr Hook
and some Quo and The Eagles. His taste went downhill as he aged though.

Embarrassingly I was really into Oasis when I was a young teenager, a battered tape of Metallica's Black album saved me. Didn't get into Floyd until uni really.

I've never really liked Springsteen

I'm working on getting my hands on Mrs V's dad's vinyl collection. and his turntable. I've already acquired most of his old stereo for my music room.

My old man gave me all his records, only about 11 or 12 after they got smashed moving
but I now own all of Nick Drakes' albums on vinyl, a copy Peter Frampton (HA!) and an arse load of Queen albums.

Springsteen was also great for long car journeys.

Looks like there's some good stuff in November
Matt Schofield is playing London on the 20th and Oxford on the 22nd. Then if you can stomach the trip back to London again, Ian Siegal is playing on the 25th.

The way things are going there may also be several much more amateurish gigs with assorted bands in London that, crucially, feature ME. And of course anybody who's anybody will want to see those.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:05, Reply)
Let me know when you're playing
I'm going to be down in London quite a lot hopefully this term, so I might be able to make it especially if it is a weekend

Haha, you flatter me
I'm sure you've better things to do than come watch an Alex Harvey tribute band, a rip-off of the Stones or my own awful blues band. But since you've asked I'll make everybody is told about it repeatedly.

Alex Harvey

Faith Healer is the badger
(And we have played that one a few times before, I do like it.) Must admit though, despite joining the band, I'm not that big a fan of SAHB in general. But it is mostly blues/rock n' roll so it's good fun to jam on.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:42, Reply)
that's the one
can't beat a good blues rock jam, that's why I like playing with my band, that's more or less all we do
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:44, Reply)
It is an incomparable feeling
when a jam really gets going and all the musicians click properly.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:50, Reply)
indeed it is
we had an awesome practice last week. 3 or 4 new tunes, all just clicked, and me and the rhythm section played a 25 minute freakout
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 14:54, Reply)
3 or 4 new tunes?
You guys obviously write a lot faster than we do...
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 15:12, Reply)
we write very very fast
most of our songs are quite simple, or a lot of improv, but the basics are laid down fast.

Our singer can basically freestyle
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 15:15, Reply)
See, we have the problem
that the writing is basically left to me. Coming up with the music is alright, but lyrics take forever. Our drummer doesn't get involved (he can barely remember the names of the songs as it is) and I'm sure our guitarist would offer to help if it weren't for the fact that his first language is Russian.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 15:17, Reply)
I can't write lyrics at all.
I come up with songs occasionally but my strengths lie in taking a basic song from someone else and improving and adding stuff.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 15:23, Reply)
Oddly enough our guitarist usually does that
Normally I bring chords, a bassline and a tune to the proceedings, with the odd guitar riff or melody thrown in. If I give him enough time to work on it, he usually finds something pretty good to play over the top that my own shoddy guitar playing wouldn't have drummed up.
(, Wed 15 Sep 2010, 15:27, Reply)
it can work well
because our singer/guitarist isn't burdened by any knowledge of musical theory (at all, even down to chord names) he comes up with odd stuff and does it very quickly.

what is nice is when he'll play something and I will just hear in my head what lead bit it needs, and then play it.

Applebite loves the Moulettes (the 3 original members + various oddities) whereas Skinny Indie Girl and I love the original band, keytars and bleeps and all.

Having listened to both versions of Bloodshed
I think I prefer the Moulettes. The pirate image is a bit pretentious/silly, but I think I prefer their sound, though that may just be because it tallies better with all the Tom Waits and Emily Loizeau I've been listening to of late. Think I could get into this Modernaire lot, mind.

Maybe it's because the Modernaire one was the first one I heard, and loved while young
I don't know, I think it's an excellent piece of pop, it can stand alone without hurdygurdies etc.

I've never really listened to Tom Waits, though as an even younger child we had an alternative interpretation Disney CD. His version of the Dwarves' Marching Song is terrifying yet amazing. And of course Muse sampled him. And his part in Rumblefish. But I'm afraid I don't knwo that much about him.

Light my Fire is among my least favourite of their songs
he was a twat, but then a lot of twats have made great music. Doesn't bother me.

He was a great frontman
The rest of the band had the talent but lacked the charisma. One of those 'greater than the sum of their parts' bands.

definitely
one of the things I like about them is that they have a timeless quality. Their sound and their songs have aged very well indeed.
