Some nautical facts

The triangular device that hold cannonballs on a ship is called a monkey and it's made of brass. When it's really cold it contracts at a different rate to the iron balls because they're made of different materials and sometimes the cannonballs fall off. So it's sometimes cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

When the ships guns are used they are tethered by ropes to catch the recoil. In battle the ropes occasionally break and the gun flails around wildly - a loose cannon.

Also the first job a new recruit gets is climbing the rigging to set the sails - learning the ropes in other words.

I don't usually post replies on this thread....
But that Leviticus thread was so insanely wrong that I had to reply.

Leviticus is far from a business document. It is in fact a public health guide.

Recommendations not to touch the skin of a pig are related to the unsanitary conditions in which pigs live - and the likelyhood of infection as a result - the same reasons that the Jews originally did not eat pork.

The advice about Shellfish was the same, when not properly prepared, Shellfish can be dangerous and lead to food poisoning - and the people at the time had only limited knowledge of how to prepare Shellfish properly.

Wearing garments made of cotton and wool is actually bad for you - a mixed element garment is more absorbant - and thus will absorb sweat far more than a single element garment. Since sweat includes many bacteria etc. this leads to unhealthy clothing.

The various sexual regulations are also there for health reasons - most of the chapter is warning about incest, which many ordinary people back then would not have been aware of.


Therefore one should not see the passage as misplaced religious ideology, but as a 3000 year old public health guide.

This is a fact that you might enjoy spitting back at somone in the future, but you need the background first....

I hear it FAR too often, usually from someone who recites in in the manner of a Parrot. Lovely.

Leviticus 11:10 states that eating shellfish is also an abomination, and Lev 19:19 says that wearing two different types of cloth simultaniously is an abomination too...

So... Polyester/cotton blend will buy you a one-way ticket on the express-way to Hull.

USELESS FACT:
The book of Leviticus is infact a business document written by the Levite Priests. These priests are regularly likened to the Maffia: They took a cut in nearly Everything, and persecuted things that they either didn't like, or didn't get money from. The things that they say are "abominations" are usually things that made them no money: they got a cut in cotton sales, and not wool: Wear the two, and you were purchasing money on something that they didn't make profit from. They didn't get a cut in the fishing industry: Shell fish becomes evil. They had nothing to do with pigs, and suddenly touching a pig is an abomnation in the eyes of the lord. (Lev 11:6)

Now... I'm not a person of religon myself... I merely like to know stuff, and get pissed at people shoving thier way of life down my throat: Do I turn up on thier doorstep at annoying times and preach weed and sex in bulk? No. I don't.

FACT: the Levite priests had naff-all to do with "G.O.D"; they were a bunch of business men using the "fear of god" to heard profit in thier direction. Undeniably smart.

Those who use this business document to judge other's lives? NOT Smart.

Next time someone blindly quote Leviticus at you, point out that you also read that saying "Candyman" 3 times in the mirror will result in a dead bee-infested dude attacking you, and that if they have elastic in thier cotton undies, then BAM.... Lev 19:19 has earnt them an eternity in hell.

Dogs and arses
The reason dogs sniff each other's arses is quite simple. Back in the day when dogs ruled the world, they would have a weekly meeting in the town hall. Before they sat down, every dog would take off its arse and hang it up, collecting it on the way out. However, the last meeting they had was interrupted when the humans took control of the world. News spread, and in the ensuing panic, the dogs were forced to pick up which ever arse was closest, and since then have been trying to find their own arse by sniffing each other's.
