# in case you didn't know
NTL have just offered me broadband internet installation for free and only £14.99 a month rent.

Apparently they have had this offer since Monday. Sic 'em B3tans!

# it's be 128k
but it's 26 squid for 512,

and 128 is over twice dialup.. it's sooo much better.

go for it.. get 512 if you think u can afford it
(, Fri 13 Sep 2002, 16:57, archived)
# Yeah,
but is that 128K with contention between 20 or 50 people? Or is it all to yourself?

If there's contention it's not worth having!
(, Fri 13 Sep 2002, 17:04, archived)
# won't be able to find out the contention
but it is on each node..

I have 512ntl cable and even with contention it rocks..

(btw to all those lucky ADSL users, you may find that some companies will put you on a 70:1 contention.. nasty)

Unless you are business user, e.g. expensive, you will be on a contetion of about 50:1

oh and all modem access is contended at about 40:1 anyway.. so it's not a new thing and it doesn't really matter that much.

itwon'tbeeasy - show me a service where you get 128kb uncontended with a facillity to upgrade to 512 or 1mb with no installation fee that costs less than £30 a month. Don't exist.
(, Fri 13 Sep 2002, 17:10, archived)
# Modems
Yes but the 56K limit is not contended with other people - it's the pipe after that.
With ADSL you are either on 50:1 or 20:1 contention. There is no 70:1. The contentions are provided by BT wholesale, not by the ISPs so the ISPS don't dictate what they are.

If every one of the 50 users were active on a standard 50:1 contended ADSL package, then you would get WORSE speeds than a 56K modem. ADSL contention is unscalable. Enjoy it while you can is my advice :)
(, Fri 13 Sep 2002, 17:15, archived)
# there is 70:1
and the ISP do decide.

Btw Memo to ISP's from bt when they started adsl suggested they use a 65:1 contention. (trust me it's true)

Even so - every one of the 50 users would have to be using 512k (or whatever the max they have) CONSTANTLY. as in every second, all the time.

Don't happen so everybody gets a rather good connection.

I work very closely with an ISP every day. And as a reseller of bandwidth i also run a contended service (20:1) contention. which strangely everybody is happy with.

Ntl contends by node on its cable network - and nodes tend to be alot smaller than 50 users + rare that everybody will use cable modems.
