Queen's birthday celebrations show sinister rise of middle class nationalism
Sorry to share a Guardian link, but this is proper bonkers and worth a read.

I have to confess to mixed feelings on this one.
I'm very much in the 'citizen not subject' camp, though I think the monarchy serves a useful purpose for tourism, selling newspapers etc.
I think most of the peripheral family serve no useful function, and the civil list should be axed, and yet I can't help having a soft spot for Queenie, and think Prince Philip's complete lack of tact is hilarious.
Add to this the fact that the miserable cow who wrote this is taking it all too seriously and I think I'd rather share a piece of Battenburg with some Union Flag hatted neighbours than spend an evening with the woman at the top of the article who looks like she's just necked a pint of lemon juice.
TL:DR: I met the Queen once. She's tiny and never takes her gloves off.

I have no problem with the immediate family and have no desire to get rid of them. They don't have any impact on my life. I don't think I'd be able to say the same about an elected president.

Wasn't going to follow that link until you described her as sour faced pinched mouthed woman.
However, that is a flattering photo of the journo:
Can't say she came over very well in the YouTube vid I grabbed that from.

In that case you should count your blessings and be nicer to women less fair than you.

I thought it was slightly amusing (in a troll the monarchists way), but I don't think there's been a rise in the thing she's complaining about. It's always been there.
Some of my niblings will be going to parties tomorrow with their deity-fearing parents (brandishing copies of The Servant Queen)
I've got mixed feelings about the utility of monarchy too, but I think the psychological / deference and superstitious aspects of it are pretty vile

When she starts her article by saying "how she fled to Scotland to avoid the royal wedding". I thought is it because it wasn't about her and how she had to make a fuss about someone she doesn't know, a wedding, and turn the event into her and how she feels. When really deep inside she wanted to be the princess....or why didn't she just turn rhe TV off and do some gardening instead of pissing off to Scotland in a flounce....Queenie's birthday in NZ has been full of events and random things hardly anyone here flouncing
