More focused on machining than restoration but I love that he drafts by hand. I had to learn how to do that myself and it’s a really very restful activity if you have the kit for it.
This fella is basically doing what I would if I ever win the lottery: get myself a little workshop and just potter around making things. It’s clear that he’s a professional however, as I doubt most machinists bother grinding as much as he does.

And to make matters worse, I hear he's a billionaire.

Then he said micron and I wet myself a little.
Then I heard the little popping sound that the chuck pins made and knew he was serious.
Then I saw his fingernails and was glad that he was a real machinist.

He really has brought Bluegrass to a new level. I'm still amazed though, that in this day and age nobody has made an authentic sounding banjo pickup.

Massive open world and non-linear storyline.
Made during an actual war, one of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R devs was killed in Bakhmut a couple of days ago, a sad irony; funeral video:-

very tempted to sell it when the prices went crazy a year or so ago.
Keep wondering about the ever more finely detailed game scenery, buildings etc. It must take a lot of time and money for companies but does it make much difference to gameplay beyond a certain level of detail? Or has someone released Sim Tourist 2025 where the object is to walk around admiring the view, taking far too many photos and being overcharged at cafes.

I just prefer games without crafting and inventory juggling. RPGs need to be really good to keep my interest. Prey had an interesting enough story but Stalker had too much slogging from place to place.
But anyway, even with last gen cards Doom Eternal had a few spots where I just had to stop to take in the scenery. I was really looking forward to Darktide but it turned out to be all co-op and I really don’t like those games.

Brazil legend Pele dies aged 82

( , Thu 29 Dec 2022, 22:48, Reply)

he took me out in his mineiro city, uberlandia, to one of these exclusive sports clubs that the rich are members of, all bow-tied waiters and pools and tennis courts. it had been around since the 30s but he told me it had a no black person policy when Pele rolled into town in the early sixties, already a star of santos. The club extending him a special invitation. Pele turned up with 20 other black locals he'd brought, saying if they didn't let his 'friends' in he wouldn't attend, forcing a policy change. so there was more to him than football.
had a google. might have been this occasion in '61. paid him a pile for an exhibition match so might have been hard to refuse him
but he's not quite held in the same reverence in brasil, though I'm sure they'll make a fuss now. mostly because of the damage to his rep fighting not to acknowledge an illegitimated daughter who was living in squalor in a favela. it took five years in court for him to admit the girl was his, despite it looking a like a chip off the old block. it was a bit of cunt's act
( , Fri 30 Dec 2022, 4:30, Reply)

I’m sure the impoverished masses in the favélas, who his illegitimate daughter was soon to join, were immensely grateful that he had opened the doors to exclusive country clubs for them. Did he help out with joining fees?
I’ll always remember him as the affable geriatric flogging Viagra for Pfizer on the telly adverts. It was an all time classic "I’m asking for a friend" marketing. He even did interviews saying he still had plenty of lead in his pencil, but if ever he didn’t, he would definitely take Viagra. So dignified.

thought pru's points were valid too. Pele was a shill
( , Fri 30 Dec 2022, 21:31, Reply)

but he did this gesture at a time when there was no civil rights in brasil. he didn't have to, whether it made a difference or not. They still talk about it in uberlandia, so it did something. Also possible he became cynical and venal as he got older, many people do

his whole argument goes out the window. The footage doesn't look slowed down to start with. Let's see him argue against wires. Did they have wires in 1969?
PS I know like every other sane person that the moon landing was real

Today, I will mosty be listening to Batswana death metal.
This band was mentioned in "Detectorists" on telly.
( , Thu 29 Dec 2022, 0:00, Reply)

I'm probably more into the tech side of death metal, but if I hear 'death metal' then my interest is piqued.
I really need to calm the gigs down next year but I'm doing Archspire in Bristol, as well as Cannibal Corpse in London, and ATG Festival, so that's a few bases covered.

I'll be at the O2 too, in April, for CC.
