Buddy Holly was shite, as was Bill Haley, the sweaty old cunt.
Who/what else is also shite?

The way to test this
is to call Sportscow a cunt and see if he notices.

I can't do that, I really like Sportscow
If only there were someone else in this mini-thread I could call a cunt...

I have to say I only rate probably four songs of theirs.

(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:01, Reply)
Which ones?

(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:02, Reply)
Helter Skelter, Tomorrow Never Knows and....errr.....

Sorry, I think I meant to say 'two'.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:05, Reply)
And how many Take That songs do you rate?
I'll bet that those four Beatles songs are pretty peerless too.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:04, Reply)
That's the point.
Peerless they weren't - I put it to you that at every single stage of their recording career someone else was doing what they were doing but better. And it was The Pretty Things.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:06, Reply)
You are correct, but also incorrect...
They were always in the right place at the right time and reflected what was going on in music very well.
History has incorrectly portrayed them as the sole innovators, but it is equally lazy to dismiss their worth.
You can dislike them, but not dismiss them.

This argument really needs to take place over a beer and a smoke, rather than the internet.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:13, Reply)
Oh and of course The Pretty Things are fantastic.

but with SF Sorrow they were following The Beatles, not leading
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:15, Reply)
SF Sorrow is not their best work if you ask me.
The singles they were putting out around that time were fucking mindblowing. I believe 'Defecting Grey' to be the finest British psychedelic single ever made.

Also in Mr Evasion they appear to invent drum'n'bass. In the 60s.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:18, Reply)
No arguments from me there
It is fucking ace.

Wilson was out of the race by then
One of the things that helped tip him over was McCartney dropping by and playing She's Leaving Home to him on the piano.
This says a lot about the poor man's mental state, as that is a truly awful song.

The whole of Sgt Pepper is fucking dreadful if you ask me.

Cars and girls is okay but the rest of their shite makes me want to smash a baby in the face with a newborn kitten then beat the kitten to death with a baby giraffe then make the baby giraffe watch all of lost before strangling it to death while probably sobbing.

I'm not really a fan, is what I'm trying to say.

People who think their tastes = fact.
We all like and dislike things, but some areas, like music, are largely subjective.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:11, Reply)
I agree except for one small caveat.
If I don't like it, it is shit.

but you are right about everybody else.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:14, Reply)
Yes dear.
Sadly they all want the same caveat. TBH, I feel it to, but I try to control it to avoid being a knob
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:25, Reply)
Yeah, I was trying to be tongue in cheek.
There's not a lot of point in going around declaring something popular as shit, even if it seems patently obvious that it is, because clearly a large amount of people disagree.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:28, Reply)
Oh I don't think the majority are always right, quite the reverse in fact.
But even leaving processed pap out of the discussion you either enjoy a song/artist or you don't, it's not something you arrive at based on evidence or rational argument, it's an emotional reaction, arguing about who'd right is a big game of my dad's bigger than your dad.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:32, Reply)
Again, agreed, if I implied popular = not shit, I didn't intend to
I just meant, well, exactly what you are saying really, that arguing against it is an exercise in futility. So it's best just to ignore what you don't like and leave others to it.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:35, Reply)
If only I had the maturity to do this in every area....

Alice Cooper
Let's be honest, once you get past the horror-film imagery and the ever-so-rock-n-roll persona, his music isn't really all that good, is it?

(...and yet he is still not among the Three Biggest Triumphs of Style Over Substance in the History of Popular Music)
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:14, Reply)
Go on then, this should be interesting
Please don't say Marilyn Manson, a) because I liked them when I was of an appropriate age to do so, and b) because I don't think you can credit MM with being a greater triumph of style over substance than Alice Cooper when the latter clearly directly inspired the former

Nope.
In third place is David "Shitting" Bowie, just for being an awful cunt who seemed more interested in silly names and costume changes than musical innovation.

In second place is that ghastly old harridan Madonna, who is only kept off the top spot by...

...Lady "Christ you really are ugly, aren't you?" Gaga, who seems bent on trying to be a carbon copy of the former. Or just bent.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:20, Reply)
You and I are in full agreement, once again.

(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:21, Reply)
At least, I can't think of anyone who rivals the aforementioned frightful cunts in terms of favouring a phenomenally bent image at the expense of trying to write anything remotely listenable...
Even Chubby Checker, in his defence, didn't really push his image further than just being a fat, grinning spastic, and just wrote shit songs instead.

Aww, come on
some of their stuff was alright. Cheerful catchy pop, what's wrong with that?
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:37, Reply)
I think their earlier singles were on the whole OK. They got worse as they went on.
Inoffensive pop music, I cannot say I hate it. As per Tango up there ^ people seem to think they were incredible innovators and this is mostly simply not the case. There were many worse 60 acts though.

Freddie and the Dreamers, for example, were so mind-meltingly shit I actually struggle to comprehend that they were real.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:40, Reply)
Their earlier stuff was better, in my opinion
but if I was going to pick my favourite something from the 60s it'd be motown, in any case...
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:42, Reply)
For me it would be mid-60s US teen garage punk.
I fucking love the snotty attitude of people like The Sonics. Love it.

Also the 'Freakbeat' scene in Britain c.'66.

There were worse acts at that time, I agree, but by and large I don't have to listen to their songs anymore
I don't have to listen to people bang on and on about how great they are and I don't have to put up with the especially annoying one occasionally trying to look relevant.

Yeah man, I preferred it when wearing make-up made be different and individual, rather than cool.
I hear where you're coming from, this is why, other than the time I met you I've not worn eye-liner in many years.

It's not up to you to work out how much of the above is sarcasm.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:50, Reply)
Do you wear it because all of your mates do, and it's 'cool'?
Or because it's what you want to do?
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:52, Reply)
Ah ha, you fail.
The only non-sarcastic bit was "other than the time I met you I've not worn eye-liner in many years."

Anyway, in past tense, it was because mostly I wanted to, the fact other people I hung out with was probably also a factor, as was the fact that girls liked it. Cool, other than my personal perception of it didn't come into it.

/taking it way too seriously.

Having seen how it came out on Halloween, I might still do eye-liner on special occasions.
(, Wed 16 Nov 2011, 16:57, Reply)
Thing is, with your style, it could work quite well
However, when the only thing that they ever used to wear were band t-shirts, baggy jeans and trainers, the eyeliner just looked fucking ridiculous.
