Any of you lot on bog standard Freeview? 'cus TalkTalk and BT are so cheap for internet/telly, there are loads and loads of chavs out there who have got their boxes but don't want them 'cus they probably got sky or something better......
.... so on ebay, for about £80 or soo, you can get a YouView box, which does all the OnDemand stuff, High Def stuff, 320gb recording, plus its a really fast and responsive guide with all sorts of other clever bits. You can even download an app and get it to record via your phone like Sky and Virgin.
A normal recording first-hand Freeview box will set you back £100 at least, and there are no monthly bills.
Well worth it.

I'm suspicious
The RRP for a Youview box is £299, although most are given away "free" with broadband contracts anyway.
I know a couple of people who have boxes of a similar price that get all the Sky channels, and they definitely aren't legal.

That's 'card sharing', that is.
Basically the card is in a computer somewhere on the internet and it decodes everyone's sky.
I looked into it, you're about £50 for a box then about £6 month for every channel.

To be fair
After the expenses thing MPs cant decide their own wages so it is being forced upon them. However they are also saying to cut the expenses side of things so you get greater remuneration up front so it balances out...
That said there was quite an interesting thing a couple of weeks ago show what MP's thought they should be paid. Both Labour and Lib said around 70k odd (I don't recall the exact figure) and the Cons went with 90k odd.

i think overall i read somewhere that even with the pay rise there is an overall cut in spending on MP's
like you say, due to the change in expenses, but 70-90k for a politician is huge money.

Compared to, say, a CEO or footballer?
If wages relate to responsibility, then surely they ate underpaid, also their career may only last 5 years.
I doubt however that any of them are there fir the money. Power is worth a lot, lot more.
(
localboy purveyor of pisspoor puns, Thu 11 Jul 2013, 12:49,

but like was said below, it's rarely their only career choice,
there is plenty they can go on to after the 5 years.
Money should be based on responsibility to a point, but if you're serving the public need, and the public are facing pay freezes and changes, surely you should be on level.
To be honest, i don't know enough about the expense changes to know if this is a pay rise, or a cut overall, with a pay rise to take over from other benefit losses.

Pay is only part of a job package
Add the working hours, holidays, expenses, directorships, subsidies, second homes, etc, and the salary part is a small part of the pie.
Same with any job, look at the package, and with MPs salary is probably a smaller part of it than most jobs. For example at least one MP claimed over £100k in expenses last year.

how could you have a maximum wage?
how can you stop someone who owns a company from paying their staff or themselves what they want?
(
rachelswipe with a fork, Thu 11 Jul 2013, 12:51,

You could legislate to cap wages, but that wasn't really the point.
The point is more to keep wages in proportion, so if the CEO wants to award himself a 20% pay rise, then the lowest earners in the company also get a 20% pay rise.

I think they should be forced to dedicate full-time work to the job, so many of them have other jobs and treat being an MP like some kind of bonus.

Not sure
Most are set up for memory sticks, so depends if the HDD is formatted right for it, and whether it can cope with a drive that big.
Would almost certainly need to be a powered HDD, doubt the socket would supply the juice for a USB powered one.

If I was spending about a tonne on media-stuff I'd get an android box that'll run XBMC and whack netflix, spotify et al on it.
I was going to do that with a raspberry pi but it broke. Android seems a better option anyway because streaming services support it.
