Good morrow QOTWers

How were your weekends?
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 8:53, 154 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Good morning Mr K
My weekend was lovely. I booked my holiday so I'm all excited and don't even mind that it's Monday!
How was yours then?
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 8:56, Reply)
Good news, Ms Lust
Holidays are the best.

I've got two working weeks left until mine.

Edit - weekend was fine thanks, if a tad busy.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 8:59, Reply)
I've still got to wait another 9 weeks :(
But it'll be worth it as I'm hopefully going to see a Dutch friend I met in China who I haven't seen in almost a year.
I love reunions!
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:05, Reply)
9 weeks
ooh, that's nearly October :(

I'd have thought with a name like Wanderlust you'd always be travelling!

I would be, if I didn't have to work to afford it, and I had the time. But real life gets in the way.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:11, Reply)
I would travel more.
But lack of funds always seems to be an issue.
Still, I've done ok so far.
I have to get away soon though. I get restless if I stay somewhere for to long. I've been back home from the last adventure for nearly a year and it's all getting a bit boring now!
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:16, Reply)
Do it now
I've always fancied going off for a couple of years to travel around the world. But I should have done it when I was younger. Now I've too many commitments and responsibilities! So I'll need to wait until I'm retired or have won the lottery.

The latter is unlikely however.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:20, Reply)
I'm going away again next year I hope.
I'm thinking about Canada for a year.
Though I'm not sure yet!

I always think winning the lottery would be amazing. But it means I have to actually play and most of the time I can't be bothered.

Weekend
Spent two days mountain biking around Bucks/Beds with three of my friends. Saturday was spent at Aston Hill, Sunday was spent riding the Ridgeway and taking in the countryside/riding some challenging trails/playing silly buggers etc.

All good clean fun...

What did everyone else get up to?
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:28, Reply)
Hi folks.
@PJM - I sat at home feeling sorry for myself : (

I'm in a bit of a fug at the moment.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:31, Reply)
@Lust
Canada is good. It's big enough to be relatively empty, but does have enough people to have nice cities too. Bloody cold in winter though!

@PJM. Your weekend sounds like fun. Mine was spent gigging, crawling under my car and watching the F1 race from Hockenheim.

Edit@BGB - morning! Need some cheering up then?

Good morning.
I'm going to set off on a mini-holiday tomorrow. Will be meeting up with my fellow QOTW'ers, some other friends and exploring West-England.

Was originally designated a buisness-trip, but none of the companies I applied for want to interview me, so I'm just going to enjoy myself.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:36, Reply)
@K2k6
I don't mind the cold so much, I'm thinking if I go I'll try and do a ski season at Whistler. I've got family in Vancouver anyway. Plus ski seasons are fun! I did one a few years ago in Italy.

Edit: Hello spakka. I'm not sure if I can make the bash tomorrow now. I have to be up at silly o'clock on Wednesday and I'm pretty much a pussy when it comes to staying out late on school nights.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:36, Reply)
@Lust
I was in Whistler once, but it was shut.

It was May though - shoulder season. The ski season was finished and the summer tourist season hadn't yet started. But I wouldn't fancy doing a ski season myself. I used to love wintertime when I was a bit fat, but now I feel the cold too badly. My metabolism must be screwed up!

Morning spakka!

Maarnin'!
Good weekend, thank you! Bought a new suit which was a bit of an extravagance as I never wear the bloody things, and then I went out on the bike.

I will lose this podge before I get wed! I will!

And I realised that it is three months til holiday, and one year and one month today that I get married.

And the sun is out, woo!

This fug will pass. The weather is getting better, allegedly, and it might cheer me up.

Btw folks - I'm giving up bread and booze for a fortnight. I may be slightly erratic in a couple of days. Bear with me.

Holidays
Right now, I have plenty of time to do a serious trip, but not enough money. Once I'm employed again, the situation will reverse itself.

I often spend my in-between job periods travelling. This is the best chance to go because you've saved up from your last job. My most-recent mega-trip involved me spending a month in Poland before heading East and making it as far as China.

@wandrlust: Pity about that. You don't have to stay for the full session - you can just drop in and say hi for a bit.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 9:45, Reply)
Mornings all
I was down in Bristol at the weekend. It was really very warm, too much so for my liking. Turns out english people are rubbish at ceilidhing*.

And both my flights were delayed. Again. Some kid started having a fit just as we were about to take off on the way home, so we had to go back to the terminal and re-taxi and everything.

And I stopped by my new flat for next year, and the boiler was making a disconcerting noise.

Wanderlust I'm very jealous of your forthcoming expedition. Another friend just booked her flight to Japan yesterday and I'm very tempted to book one myself.

I fancy seeing Japan too
but it's the complete opposite of Canada. It's small, crowded and very expensive. Canada is huge, for the most part unpopulated, and less expensive to get to and stay in.

I've been to Canada half a dozen times and only seen a tiny fraction of it. Japan would be easier to see in a shorter period because of its size.

I'm suffering from a bit of a cold at the mo'. Not sure if it's the sudden drop in temperature, hayfever, or having been breathing in dust.

Re Japan:
That's one of those places that's on my must-go list of places to visit. Several of my friends have been there, and they all see Japan from their own different perspectives. For me, Japan is more the sort of place I'd take a 2-week holiday than somewhere where I'd go on a big adventure.

@wanderlust: Come for a bit. You can have the best of both worlds this way.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 10:16, Reply)

What is this sudden drop in temperature you speak of? Up here it's been continually bloody cold since August 2006.

I'm looking out of the window and see it's a nice sunny day here. I'll tell you after lunch how warm it is.

And Becky - I suspect your thingy on the window is receiving some direct sunshine.

It also amuses me
that fine weather is called 'settled' and rain is 'unsettled'.

Surely if it rains every day for three weeks (remember last summer?) that's 'settled' weather?

This week, we're to have light showers, drizzle and perhaps thunderstorms.

How British is this discussion, by the way?

Edit - Hello Empress Bob, bye Becky.

Out here in west Lunnon (Gunnersbury)
It's slightly overcast. Our sodding office is freezing in winter and boiling in summer, so although it was a bit nippy when I was cycling this morning, I've now had to strip down to the barest minimum, as the office builds up heat and doesn't let it out (huge west-facing windows).

Alfas... Bloody lovely to look at and occasionally brilliant to drive. But beware the dealer network. Also beware anything electrical manufactured by Magnetti Marelli, which WILL go wrong in expensive fashion.

The great God of Italian electrics can strike without warning or mercy, with a battle cry of "Ma-ma Mia!" while it pisses in your fusebox.

Sorry, I'm still north of the wall. Much as I would love to find myself on a small island paradise in the Pacific Ocean, I'm not.

Mmm, island paradise.

With sand.

And warm clear sea.

And really big shells.

and a bar full of lovely cocktails and gin and champagne.

With a hot barman.

And some sort of slavey to waft cool air over me with a big palmleaf fan.

and a really, really good book.

And a hammock.

And cake.

I'm more of a mountain person myself
After a gruelling day of walking along a challenging yet scenic mountain path that takes me through several changes in altitude and vegetation, I'd find a nice mountain hut by the side of a lake at the top of a waterfall, which is in turn fed by another waterfall. I'd go skinny-dipping in the lake, and then return to the hut and have a meal on the terrace with a view of the mountains in the distance whilst breathing in the insanely fresh air and listening to the faint sound of cow-bells.

I am rather a fan of Porsche. Having a mate who works for them helps, it must be said!

And another mate has just bought an RS4, but I'll not be getting a go in it, as he's scared to let anyone drive it in case they crash. Which is a valid point!

Is a long drive in a nice car. Or a long ride on a nice motorbike. Followed by a days surfing or, depending on where you are in the world, a day of snowboarding.

Then, in the evening while the body resets itself, an ice-cold beer and a steak, with a view of either the sea or the mountain you just tamed.

Over the weekend I have created a giant wicker kitten in which to store the kitten harvest, thanks to Our Glorious Leader's generous grant.

I suspect that with the aid of some scientists we could line the interior with glass rods or amber or some such, and the thousands of fluffy kittens scurrying around inside should generate enough elastictrickery for the nation's power needs. What do you think?

Actually my weekend was rather dull, as I spent it suffering acute beer poisoning from Friday night.

Knightings?
Yay.

My weekend was fun :) Mr Maladicta and I went to a foam party on Saturday night for my friend's 21st and spent the rest of the time playing Guitar Hero and watching Animaniacs and Viva La Bam while eating junk food. Weekends FTW.

Today, the flat hunting has commenced: I've seen one today (too small; pushy owner), and have to go back to Ashford tomorrow to look at three more.

@Wookie
Your wicker kitten static electricity plant is a good idea, but extracting energy from the charge is quite difficult unless you allow it to break down (a spark). I would suggest it would be better to have a large treadmill with a toy mouse suspended on a piece of string at one end. Then the kittens will spend all day trying to chase it, while never actually reaching it, and the energy from the treadmill could then be used to turn a huge generator.

Mind you, knowing cats, they'd probably get fed up and go to sleep on the treadmill instead.

Surely we could somehow...
harness the power of the Buttered Cat Paradox?
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 14:51, Reply)
I'm not sure that would work.
Surely the kitten would need to be attached to something to generate any power, but being attached would mean it was supported and thus no longer falling...

Besides, this is coming dangerously close to kitten abuse, and in any true utopia that is a capital crime.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 14:57, Reply)
I agree with Wookie, so
perhaps we could use this purely for entertainment purposes instead - who's in charge of Entertainment and Leisure Activites?
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 14:59, Reply)
Not kitten abuse.
They would be able to work in shifts, and would be the most highly-trained operatives who enter the programme voluntarily.

Like the space programme.

That's a point, actually. Perhaps we should try for space exploration... Who can build me a warp drive?

IN OTHER NEWS: I am reading Fundies Say The Darndest Things and it's upsetting me.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 14:59, Reply)
Buttered kittens
would not need to be attached to anything, if you strapped magnets to them. Then if they rotated inside a coil of wire you could extract the energy (this would work perfectly if you ignore the fundamental law of conservation of energy)

It would probably constitute kitten abuse though, which I don't agree with.

Or if they're hairy
they could be placed in a tube of rubbable material and the static electricity produced could somehow be harnessed.

Kittens and static electricity.
I was thinking, if kittens build up and store a static charge that can be gradually released, we could use kittens as batteries.

As minister of gadgets, I say we research the possibility of building gadgets with kitten-slots instead of battery-slots.

BTW: Who's the minister of kittens?
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 15:28, Reply)
@spakka
How would you gradually release the energy? Static charges just dissipate with 1 spark generally.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 15:32, Reply)
I'd just like to say...
That I am going to the Premier Screening of The Dark Knight at the iMax tonight.

FEAR ME!
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 15:36, Reply)
My gadgets
would be full of capacitors. One quick charge would get them going. And besides, it's better for the kittens this way. They don't want spend ages locked up inside a battery-slot.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 15:36, Reply)
Eureka!
Use the kittens to charge up one plate of a parallel plate capacitor. Then current can flow in the external circuit!

Alternatively, you could charge the kittens and then connect them to a metal rod which was then dipped into an ionic fluid. You could extract current as the ions flowed across between the cathode and anode.

*repeats cation joke*

*waits for groans from sciency types*

But I'm still going to groan.

How many ministers of these things are there these days?

And also, becky bet you DiT, she saw it yesterday.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 15:40, Reply)
@K2k6
Wouldn't the gain or loss of ions and the long-term suspension in an ionic fluid be harmful to the kittens?
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 15:43, Reply)
Yeah, but she didn't see the Premiere.
With the people that were in the film!

(apart from Heath Ledger, that is...)
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 15:46, Reply)
@spakka
The ionic fluid could just be salty water, and provided the voltages weren't too high, the kittens would be fine, if a bit annoyed.

But in practice, static voltages tend to be quite high - kilovolts - and this would be a problem. They're only virtual kittens though, so it's not an issue!

@DiT - Is this Dark Knight the Batman film everyone's on about then?

*knows bugger all about films*

I haven't had an answer to this week's QOTW
I looked at the IMDB top 250 films of all time today and counted the number of them that I'd seen.

21.

Twenty-one. Less than 10%, of the 250 most popular films ever.

I don't really do films...
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 16:17, Reply)
I'm with you on that one K2k6
I've hardly seen any of the films that everyone else raves about. And I've never seen a Batman film before either. Think I went to the cinema twice last year, doing slightly better this year and have been twice already!
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 16:20, Reply)
I last went to see a film
during the Christmas holidays, but I forget what it was. Including watching them on the telly, I probably watch half a dozen each year.

I've never rented a video/DVD/download in my life. I'm neither proud nor ashamed of this, it's just a fact.
(, Mon 21 Jul 2008, 16:22, Reply)
I think I watch an average amount of movies
and I've seen 53 of that Top 250, or around 21%.

Edit: Happy Gilmore isn't on there, so the list is obviously crap.

Ooo. I'd like to see Batman.
But Forbidden Kingdom has caught mine and Mr Maladicta's attentions: "Jackie Chan. Jet Li. What could possibly go wrong?"

I've only just told my parents I got the job. If the words "graduate jobs start on £23,000 according to the Daily Fail" are mentioned, I think I may scream.

Also, Batman will be better.

^ The problem with seeing Batman
is that I haven't seen Batman Begins - forget why, I just know I haven't for some reason...

Amazingly, parents haven't mentioned graduate salaries, unless I'm in for another blackmailing email from my dad about "selling myself short", but I've given up trying to gauge their reactions to things, to be honest.

I've been playing a game called
"disappoint them consistently for your entire adult life".

At this point I'm scared of winning their approval in case the shock triggers a massive heart attack.
