My contribution to 'Rubbish Thread Day'
Charity.
Do you contribute? Have a direct debit? Personally I don't know where I would put a snow leopard. I sometimes give to the shaky tin people (Parkinsons) and give my old tat to charity shops, but apart from that, no. I feel money should be given by those who have too much.

Alt. Guilty pleasures.
I listen to Roxette and quite fancy Martin Freeman.
What are your guilty pleasures?

AltAlt. Weekend food lunch plans.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:16, 259 replies, latest was 11 years ago)
I fucked a fat bird once, but no more on that subject. I don't talk about my charity work.
Alt: Rihanna.

Alt alt: Burns supper tomorrow night.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:20, Reply)
Rihanna as in her music?
She's quite fit so that isn't so much of a guilty pleasure...
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:22, Reply)
she makes music?
Se'sly, when I saw her and Shakira were doing a song together I nearly booked a couple of days off for wanking purposes.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:24, Reply)
It's terrible.
I liked the Shakira/Beyonce video. That was sexy.

Rihanna's such a dutty ho.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:31, Reply)
Rihanna is firmly in my top three.
And I can't stress 'firmly' enough.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:34, Reply)
Once I'm over January, I'm intending to set up a little standing order to a charity.
Suggestions welcome, though it will probably be to the homeless of some sort, or maybe a local yute project.

Alt: hair metal/hard rock. Love it occasionally, and pretty shamelessly, too, actually - Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden (no guilt there), WASP, Motley Crue, all of that lot.

Altalt: a friend who owes me a fiver is coming over tonight, and we shall drink red wine and eat cheeses, and then tomorrow I imagine we might well have a curry.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:22, Reply)
I'd suggest a local charity. They probably need it more.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:23, Reply)
Yeah that's what I thought - the smaller ones use it better too.
Mrs V worked for one of the larger ones, and it was all CEO bonuses and exciting away trips for senior management.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:27, Reply)
it's almost as if to be truly effective, a large charity has to attract and retain high performing staff with attractive salary and benefit packages

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:29, Reply)
You do talk shit sometimes.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:31, Reply)
no no Stunned, you're right, any charity runs far more effectively on a shoestring budget with simpleton staff, how silly of me to suggest otherwise.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:35, Reply)
Yes, of course.
Fucking simpleton.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:36, Reply)
sorry, so do you think that large charities should pay executive level salaries at less than market rates?
Because if staff at that level or with particular skills/experience are required, how else should they be attracted to and retained by the organisation?
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:42, Reply)
The fact that it's a charity.
That should be their motivation.

Like when slebs do charity things for free. I'm not suggesting they shouldn't be paid, but they should be doing it for less than the market rate because they want to help the charity.

Of course this will never happen, as people are scum.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 13:08, Reply)
well of course
I can't see an additional rate taxpayer opting to take a 30k drop in salary just because it's a charity.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 13:09, Reply)
No, you can't. Neither can I.
Still - one can dream.

Who mentioned 30k?
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 13:11, Reply)
Dozer did, in the post above yours

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 13:13, Reply)
I plucked the figure from the ether.
So what reduction in salary do you think there should be in the charity sector then?
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 13:21, Reply)
I dint actually mention a reduction in salary.
But rather that I was aware that larger charities operate far more like profit-making companies than what might be perceived as making money for charity.

CEO bonuses and expensive "research trips" abroad withstanding.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 13:29, Reply)
People's wages aren't directly proportional to either their intelligence or their ability.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:37, Reply)
yes, I know this.
Thanks for the info!
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:38, Reply)
So your inference that low wages equals simpleton staff, or that high wages equals skilled staff is a bit silly.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:41, Reply)
no, you are simplifying my point
Large charities are often comparable in size to large companies, in terms of turnover, money raised etc, so senior staff with the appropriate experience of such organisations need to be offered comparable benefits. Why would you expect to pay less than the going rate?
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:45, Reply)
... because you're a chariddy.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:51, Reply)
oh dear

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:52, Reply)
I agree.
It's a great shame, but we're selfish creatures.
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:58, Reply)
It would be interesting* to see the ratio between how much goes to the actual charitable acts vs wages as charities grow in size.

*Really dull
(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:31, Reply)
The Charity Commission insist each organisation report on this every year.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:33, Reply)
In effect the large charities become lobbying groups for whatever.

If only there was some sort of, I dunno, government regulator or summat to ensure these things don't get abused.

(, Fri 24 Jan 2014, 12:33, Reply)
