I am a true Jock, resident north of the border. Evidence of Caledonian-ness in my profile!
Good to have another scientist around here. Our numbers are growing.
I was crap at organic chemistry. I could never remember all the reaction kinetics and so on. Physics was much more logical to me, as you can work stuff out without having to remember it parrot fashion.

I think you're being harsh, there. Physics was no more than maths advanced, to me. As long as you remember the appropriate maths formulae, you're OK. Organic chemistry is a bit of a pig, but once you break through the initial barrier, you're fine. Inorganic is a doddle and analytical is my favourite! FT-IR? I'm mad for it!

I just had a look at my profile. What a load of nonsense! I really must clear it out sometime. It's like the cupboard under the stairs that you just keep putting junk into and closing the door, until one day the door no longer closes and you have to get in and throw lots of stuff out.
Edit - Morning, TGB.

So I'm temping to get some admin experience and a weekly wage. Also, if I temp and finally get offered something in London I can up and leave and not need to give much notice.

The Macarena!
My drummer called his uncle a couple of weeks again.
He said that there was a massive amount of background noise, and he couldn't hear what his uncle was saying properly.
Then his uncle said "I'll just turn the music down".
As the volume dropped, my drummer could clearly hear that he'd been blasting out The Macarena.
While sitting at home.
Who does that?

As mentioned above, it’s the uncertainty that’s killing me at the mo.
Already I’ve heard baseless rumours that I might be able to stay here, and that HP encourage working from home, or even that I might get a promotion out of it. But bog-diddly-all is set in stone, and as one of those people that nothing ever works out for, I’ll just sit in mindless pessimism.
Then again, HP are a more reputable company for my CV. It’s better to say I work for one of the biggest IT companies in the world than say I work for a drug dealer that used to be called Gehe – which was pronounced ‘Gayer’.
Drugs and IT – I thought I had a job for life!

No. It's a well known fact that people who design bits for cars are the most unsafe in their own homes.
Consider the evidence:
- Scraping some old wallpaper off the wall - 8 stitches in left hand
- Opening a can of paint - 3 severed tendons in right hand and 17 stitches
- Demolishing a conservatory - 8 stitches along the jaw
- Connecting a trailer to a car - loss of all the skin on one knee.
- Attaching a new magnetic catch to a wardrobe door - drilled a hole all the way through left thumb. 3 stitches.
I'm officially full of DIY fail.

A knife.
Not a Kaol-style machete.
A normal, blunt, crap table knife.
The paint tin was fairly well stuck, so I was pushing hard with the knife, which was working great until my hand slipped and ran down the blade while still gripping with all my force.
It's a weird sensation having a hand that's half paralysed and doesn't work any more.

Mrs Devil's Dad, ex-military and armed response police, says that if you get shot under the arm while wearing a bullet proof vest, the bullet can actually bounce around inside you and do a tonne of damage.
It's a small chance, but a chance nonetheless!

Like shooting people in the head with a .22 rimfire rifle.
The bullet will go in, but won't have enough force to come out, it'll just bounce around inside causing massive head trauma.

(a) the primer for larger calibres (centre-fire) is contained in a separate cap in the centre of the base of the cartridge, the firing pin hits that and off you go. The .22 is a bit tiddly for that so the primer compound is sealed withing the external rim of the cartridge, and the firing pin strikes the rim, and bang.

are pretty crap really, they really only exist because they can. Granted they'll put someone down, but you're much better off with a .45.
Edit: I'm talking about the stupid .50 pistol rounds here, the .357 and .308 rifle cartridges are useful for hunting.
Edit2: Where do they sell these crazy books? Places like Forbidden Planet?

![This is a QotW comment](/images/board_posticon.gif)
The .45 (I assume .45 ACP) is fine at close range, does very bad things to whoever it hits, but the muzzle velocity isn't much cop.
A .357 Magnum (which is just a beefed up .38 Special) will outrange it, and crack an engine block apparently but is really too long to fit into a semi-automatic, which is why short fat rounds like the 9mm Para, .40, and .45 still survive.
(Ignoring such sillies as the .44 Automag and .44/.50 Desert Eagle as you needs wrists of steel and they weigh about as much as a Range Rover)

here's a (rather old) joke that I found lying around on a Unix machine.
A man with a bald head and a wooden leg gets invited to a fancy dress party. He doesn't know what costume to wear to hide his head and his leg so he writes to a fancy dress company to explain the problem.
A few days later he receives a parcel with a note.
"Dear Sir, please find enclosed a pirate's outfit. The spotted handkerchief will cover your bald head and with your wooden leg you will be just right as a pirate".
The man thinks this is terrible because they have just emphasised his wooden leg and so he writes a really rude letter of complaint.
A week passes and he receives another parcel and a note which says "Dear Sir, sorry about before, please find enclosed a monk's habit. The long robe will cover your wooden leg and with your bald head you will really look the part".
Now the man is really annoyed since they have gone from emphasising his wooden leg to emphasising his bald head and he writes the company a REALLY rude letter of complaint.
The next day he receives a small parcel and a note which reads "Dear Sir, please find enclosed a tin of treacle. Pour the tin of treacle over your bald head, stick your wooden leg up your arse and go as a toffee apple, you cunt."

It seems to have some sort of weird anti-compromise with the suspension settings, possessing neither anything approaching good handling nor any degree of comfort. It's the only car I've ever driven for 40 miles on a stretch of modern motorway and alighted feeling carsick at the end due to the constant jiggling and twitching.

You can do it. I have. It requires some cunning, good 3D visualisation skills, brute force and a little bit of luck.
You will have to apply a lot of force to get the old ones off, as they usually rust into place.
And you will cut your fingers on the sharp edge of the hook on the wiper arm, when the old blade suddenly gives way. So buy some sticking plasters first.
