What's the scariest film you've seen recently? The sort that makes you switch the bathroom light on when you go for a pee duting the night instead of wandering across the landing and going to toilet in the dark.

I think that I have been desensitised from years of watching them.

Recommendations for a non-formulaic one would be welcomed though.

I finished watching it last night, it sort of did my head in.
Had to go for a drive to calm myself.
The idea of people killing others solely for gratification freaks me out, I suppose because it's more realistic than vampire lurking in shadows.

then leaning in to watch his expression while he died
*shudders*
real or not, that's some fucked up shit

I think I've mentioned this film too much on /offtopic though.
Generally horror films aren't that scary. Especially films out these days. The stuff with the shit special effects of the 70's, 80's and early 90's were much better for some reason.
(, Tue 16 Jun 2009, 14:45, Reply)
In the 80's I was but a bairn, so even prosethetic fake monsters that were clearly just actors in suits seemed far scarier than the 3d gimmickery you get today.
And the fact that Werewolves, Aliens and general freaks were actually plausible to an 8 year old.

American werewolf in London.
Or the bit where he has that dream in the hospital.

The lead characters mate who returned as a ghost (or zombie??) freaked me out, what with his entirely missing NECK!
Can't remember the plot too well, only the scaries

It's the kind of thing to destroy your mind as a child.
But looking at now is laughable!

First time I've properly screamed like a girl at a film in a long time.
I thought My Bloody Valentine was pretty scary, but that's probably because I'm shit scared of gas masks.

Ever put one on? They're not remotely scary, in fact, you can get a bit of a high from them as they restrict breathing to 30% of normal - you end up running up and down with your brain screaming at you "what the fuck are you doing, mate? Where's that oxygen?"
:D

don't worry, little nerdy, geeky one ... it's fine.
:)
(, Tue 16 Jun 2009, 16:16, Reply)
I heard that was really good, worth a watch in your opinion?
I can't wait for The Last House on The Left remake, I hope its as freaky as the original!! *crosses fingers*
(, Tue 16 Jun 2009, 14:52, Reply)
What I liked about it, (or, more like, what freaked me out about it), was the whole "Is she mental and is it all in her head" vs "Is it daemonds" thing.

cool stuff, I'll give it a whirl.
I like films like that, they’re spooky. I like Identity because its it has quite a clever concept – multiple personalities being brought together in a serial killers mind and then one by one bumped off, it was different.

The Ring
The Grudge
Event Horizon
The Thing

John Carpenter's The Thing? If so, I agree, I saw it as a kid and it took me 20 years before I could watch it again.
Also Hallowe'en. If it was on TV, as soon as I heard the opening bars of the tune, I changed channel.

My mate bought it on Blu-Ray, it looks stunning. It shit me right up (again)...in HD!
(, Tue 16 Jun 2009, 15:15, Reply)
it was Ju-On, the Japanese version of The Grudge.
Incidentally, is Ju-On is like a hard-on for circumcised men?
(, Tue 16 Jun 2009, 15:08, Reply)
Is a great film, soooo much better than the re-make, the kid in it is far more freaky!!

can do that croaky grating noise from the film. It's quite impressive, I just wish he wouldn't.
You know the bit where they're looking at that CCTV footage, and the black mist stuff comes up to the camera and becomes that scary kid looking into the camera? That made my hair stand on end twice. Once during the film, and then later when I went for a pee.
There's a lat missing from the blind at the toilet window, and while I was in there, Mrs SLVA though it'd be funny to sneak outside and peep in at me. I looked up and saw here eyes at the window and screamed like a little girl.

when I was staying in a room with my sister - I scared the crap out of her!
Hehe evil tricks are funny. Me and my friend were coming home from a pub and staggered up to the window of her flat to see her hubby and about 6 of his mates watching The Ring. We snuck to the side of the window and waited until a bit in the film when the phone rang and then we called her hubby. When he answered I whispered ‘You’re gonna die’ and then we threw ourselves at the window. I have never heard a group of men sound less masculine before in my life – it sounded like 1,000 mice being trampled ‘Squeak-Squeal-Squeak’

Why thank you. I can be quite evil, given the opportunity! Muuuuwwwwah hahhaaaa

washing his hair, I wait until he's got his eyes shut to rinse the shampoo out and put my hair over my eyes like the girl from the ring. He screams like a woman. Every time. Although he did nearly punch me in the face last time, he claims "from the shock", so I may not do that again...

I remember that my brother was too scared to go to the toilet after watching Alligator.
In case it came back out of the toilet.

Sounds interesting. Never seen it before but it sounds like something I would watch!

had a brain-storming session after the film was finished and discussed it...
Man 1: Well it was a decent film, I'll give you that, but I feel like it was missing something
Man 2: Yes, yes I know what you mean, it needed a little more... BA-ZING!
Man 1: I've got it... NAZIS!
Man 2: By jove, that's it!

Not usually too bothered about scary films, except weird stuff like that bloke with the eyes off Pan's Labyrinth.
Is it so scary I'll do a poo in my undies?
(, Tue 16 Jun 2009, 15:35, Reply)
The most part of the film I would compare to something like 28 days later.
There are some truely freaky bits though - I wouldn't recommend watching it in the dark, alone, at 2am, while hungover - like I did. Almost ate my own face in fear.
(, Tue 16 Jun 2009, 15:46, Reply)
ever since I watched The Land Before Time.
But I can't bear to turn on that horribly bright light after my eyes have adjusted to the darkness.
So I learnt to feel my way to the fridge. The light is much gentler on the eyes and the cold air suppresses the smell slightly.
