My tech savvy wunderlust was waning of late. I own a phone that has a 16 colour screen, my laptop is 5 yrs old, my mp3 player is actually a CD player, I don't own a games console and I don't have a kindle, but invested in a book shelf instead. I do have a flat screen tv, but behind the screen is a large box about the size of a small factory. Never the less it's still a flat screen. So with Christmas around the corner I thought it was the perfect excuse to get something interesting like a new phone or a kindle or something similarly useful. Just wondering what shiny bleep bleep bling everyone else has got?
ALT Q: How do you know when Gorgonzola cheese has gone off?

they are not books. they are just not the same. you can't walk into waterstones or a second hand kindle shop and spend ages browsing around them.
also, bring out these spinning machines i've heard about, i'll smash those up too...

Have you seen the Macbook Air? I want one but simply can't justify it with a high end Macbook Pro _and_ an iPad.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 11:15, Reply)
i avoid the apple shop because i will buy things that i don't understand and i can't use because they make me want to touch them!
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 11:43, Reply)
I won't be able to take my books with. A highly unlikely probability of this happening, but every time I buy a book i'll always think, 'What if...'. That thought might be the end of me.

I was leaning towards the X10, but it was mentioned on this site that it was a bad phone because it didn't have 'pinch zoom'. Perhaps an HTC wildfire? An iphone is just too big.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:43, Reply)
Although it's kind of the same size as the iPhone, so don't go on size.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:46, Reply)
It's like a laptop in my pocket. Or a small tablet at best.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:47, Reply)
the iPhone really isn't too big, for me it's the perfect size, not to small to lose or make everything fiddly... but not to big to not fit in my pockets.
Your best bet is to walk into somewhere like CarPhoneWearhouse, let them sell you the schpiel and show you all the features... then walk out telling them you'll think about it, and look around for a good deal.

did you read my long gaz, any thoughts? i'll need that info first though! xx

I'm gonna reply in my lunch break and give you the latest skivvy =) My mind is really at ease now though, I spoke to him about it and he misunderstood a lot of it, and thought "Oh, it's OK, he doesn't mind" =/.

Kindles are soulless and I'm still on pay as you go.
I do have a laptop, notebook and an ipod.
Alt Q: you hear the door slam?
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:40, Reply)
Phone :- HD7, Desire HD, iPhone 4, Pre 2
Laptop :- Macbook Pro 17".
MP3 Player :- [redundant with good phone]
Games Console :- Depends on what sort of game you like.... PS3 would make a Bluray player redundant, but if you're not going to have at decent telly, then go for the Wii as you might find the games more 'fun'.
Telly :- I *think* they'll be out round about now, but one of the new Sony ones with Google TV built in.
eBook Reader :- iPad or Galaxy Tab..... if you don't want to spend a fortune, then eBuyer.com had a 7" android pad that would make a perfect ebook reader for about £150.
Or was this a "I shun the shine, I'm so bohemium, what's the point of running water anyway?" post?
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:41, Reply)
If everything on it worked it would be the best phone ever. But everything on it doesn't work.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:53, Reply)
as mine now takes about 2-3 minutes to warm up and for the picture to stabilise.
I want some sort of flat screen device but frankly the tech has moved on so much that I have no idea what I need to look for.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:50, Reply)
But you can't go wrong with one that goes to 1080p (which is better than 1080i) resolutions.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 10:51, Reply)
This whole 1080 thing confuses and upsets me. I am not going to get a Blu-Ray player in the near future and I will never get sky so the need for HD isn't that critical, but I guess I might as well try and future proof it a bit.

Then it'll probably have FreeviewHD built in, which looks pretty damn impressive. Sony Bravias are pretty good, and Sony are doing VAT back until Christmas.

The only place it would be shit on, is if you use your telly as a monitor on a laptop to browse text based things like the internet.... and it won't give you the super-dooper HD resolution, but still as high as Sky or Freeview currently go.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 11:09, Reply)
I actually need to measure up how much room I have on the shelf for a telly to fit. That will be the major deciding factor on how big a telly I get.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 11:12, Reply)
My LG has the best picture on a telly I've seen, when I'm throwing it 1080p content.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 11:13, Reply)
but I recently bought a 42" full HD LCD tv and it looks sleek and modern and is a taste of what my home could look like if I spent some money and cared.
It is also a joy to watch, much better than the blurry CRT I was given.

I had a bit of a farcical "Good Life" moment yesterday, I was outside with Charlie sorting out my vegetable patch when the phone rang. I opened the kitchen door and she ran in and started wolfing down Lucy's cat food.
Oooo MARGOT!

but it wasn't scary, it was just a bit crap. then it started to get scary, so i quickly switched to "fawlty towers". i might give it another try tonight.
i didn't realise chickens ate meat. also, what kind of a cat lets a bird steal its food - lucy needs to up her game a bit, i think!!!

When I finished, there was a very full looking chicken in my kitchen and an empty cat bowl.

i am laughing to myself over the image of charlie looking fat and smug, and having to pretend that it is my application to court for the grant of a new lease that is amusing me quite so much.

i'm amazed she didn't finish it off by crapping on the floor.
Do they still make Furbies? They sound like much less hassle.

If it weren't for the fact that our rabbits have spent the last two weeks in their indoors cage with the run of the house; have their own Christmas tree and enjoy the odd digestive biscuit, I'd accuse you of over indulging your animals.

That's about it I think.

It is remarkable how much stuff we do accumulate, though. We as a family, are neither flush with cash or particularly technophiles, but thinking about it we have five fixed telephones, four mobiles, five televisions, three games consoles, one PC and three laptops between four of us. Yet somehow I've got stuff recorded from yonks ago that I've no idea when I'll get round to watching.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 11:54, Reply)
I've been fairly fortunate in getting rid of the old stuff though, most family members are willing to take hand me downs.
