Is it just me
or does anyone else not "get" modern music? We had Radio 1 on in work today and the amount of shit that was on was incredible! Stuff like the Ting Tings, Flobots, Black Kids (name of a band, I'm no racist!) etc seem to produce the nothing but whiney wank! Now I'm 19 and what some of you may consider a "hip yound thing" but I find this stuff insufferable! Give me Stevie Wonder or Zeppelin any day!

Resolved: Lindsay Lohan is not a lesbian, just an attention whore trying on a new identity for size

(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:39, archived)
Although I do think this is a Good Thing
because lesbians get a proper bona fide a-list celebrity type who is actually famous for something else, not like Ellen DeGeneres who frankly was just on a not-very-good sitcom beforehand
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:47, archived)
I don't think proper lesbians would be thrilled to have someone trying the identity on as a fashion trend...
I still think Madonna is pretty shit for promoting Kabbalah like it's something most Jews believe in. No, it's a fashion trend. Being Jewish is more than tying a red piece of string around your wrist and calling yourself mystical.

Yeah, so, like that, I guess.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:50, archived)
Hang on, are you assuming Lindsey Lohan is just pretending to be gay
simply because she is pretty and famous?

If she looked like Cynthia Nixon's girlfriend, would you accuse her of attention seeking and someone who is 'trying an identity'?
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:55, archived)
I think the fact that she is Lynsey Lohan might answer that question...

(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:57, archived)
No, I'm assuming it because she's Lindsay Lohan
It's showbusiness, any publicity is good publicity, especially if you don't have some film to promote. I have a healthy skepticism of all overexposed celebrities.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:57, archived)
She's hardly flaunted it.
If someone was 'trying the identity' I would have expected a million photos of her snogging Samantha's face off.

As it is, they've been together ages, and LiLo has just come out. She seems a lot happier too (as both myself and Limey have pointed out).
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 23:02, archived)
Or her attention whoring may well have been due to being forced to stay in the closet
by a stupidly conservative industry?

She's calmed down a lot since she's been with Samantha. Which is a good thing. I like the Lohan.

I think LiLo's a proper lesbian.
She looks happier and healthier now than she has since Mean Girls (speaking of which, LiLo is the ONLY person I can think of who looks at their best fatter and gingerer). And Sam Ronson seems nice and normal.

Hmm
I like them, maybe slightly too mainstream for me. But then I'm 30.

However, Radio 1 is rubbish because of the inane wittering.

Radio 4 is much better plus ipod and mix CDs for tunes.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:32, archived)
Radio 1's shitness is compounded by the idiots talking between songs
and asking a shit band to do a cover of a shit song is not fucking awesome, it's really fucking tedious.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:34, archived)
Radio 1? is that still going? Radio 2 is where it's at these days
and as for modern music, it's purely down to what you like. At the mo, Snow Patrol's new single is brilliant, and dare I say it,
but a potential future classic
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:32, archived)
If Radio 1 shut down

I think the Flobots record is very interesting, I'm not sure of the message behind it but it's good.
Also, Virgin radio is changing to Absolute radio, and I've listened a few times and it's been OK.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:33, archived)
Normally, when listening to music, you're able to choose from all the music ever created ever.
Radio 1 has to play new music, so it has much less music to choose from, so some of the music is likely to be not very good.
Also, some people like music that other people don't like.

Also, age doesn't define what music you like.
Also, liking old music doesn't make you any cooler than liking new music, even if you're young.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:34, archived)
Ting Tings are talentless, histrionic wanks.

(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:34, archived)
Thing is, all the music that you are deriding as modern wank
is heavily influenced by Nu-Wave, electropop and late punk music.

It has its place. There would be no point in it if people of my generation 'understood' the music. Where would the rebellion come from?
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:35, archived)
true
there's seldom anything completely original, that would be rubbish. even the folk reinventing time signatures and playing weird tuning scales have to offer a frame of reference to the listener. there's always just enough diversity for everyone to believe that the golden era of music really did happen in their own generation
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 23:10, archived)
Yes and no on this one
There are good current bands around but they are probably aren't played on the radio much- it's up to you to find them. One of the things about interactive entertainment is that you have the ability to look for things that you like, rather than just consuming whatever comes to you- so do it.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:36, archived)

Bands aren't good because no one has heard of them. While I don't rate bands on their popularity, there is enough diversity played on the radio to keep most people entertained.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:39, archived)
I'm saying that there is more diversity online
So, if you don't like what the traditional media feed you, then go and find something that you do like.
(, Fri 26 Sep 2008, 22:42, archived)
This is why I don't listen to the radio.
Also, what is there to "get"?

The way I see it, everyone has their own tastes. Not everyone will get every single song ever made.
