is to find a kindly old chinese gentleman, who trains you one on one. if you join a club they'll just turn you into a ruthlessly competitive hoodlum who'll stop at nothing to win...

The Golden Fist of Wo-Huang-Phat, its very good.
You ge to learn the five lessons of 'Phuang', break wood with your forehead and get to wear a natty green Karate robe.
That's The Golden Fist of Wo-Huang-Phat, West London, special rates for pensioners and Ninjas.
Its where I learnt my Love Ninja skills.

Did meet a woman on a train once with the biggest and most hideous bruise I'd ever seen, on her arm.
She got that from kickboxing. nice.

but I didn't do Karate. Tae Kwon Do is one of the most popular martial arts originated from South Korea. It's awesome, semi-contact (so you don't get the shit kicked out of you weekly when you first start) and it's really powerful. At my peak I was breaking through bricks with the side of my hand (forgotten the Korean for that now). It's ace, and you get to jump around lots.

where I was getting frustrated about the learning curve. Normally you start off slow and finish off fast, right? WRONG!
The gap between the first 6 belts was 3 months, the last two were 6 month gaps. I got 8 belts out of 10, so I'm not that bad.
*edit* and I also achieved what I went there to achieve in the first place. To be able to defend myself (and practically cripple the other guy!) and break through bricks and stuff with just my hands/feet/elbows etc...

You should take up a good internal art, such as Kung fu, Tai Chi or Aikido, where its less about pure strength, and more about technique.

big time.

Karate and those arts are good fun, and great excercise, but in terms of self defence they aren't that useful until you get very good at it.
if you want self defense, learn something like jiu-jitsu or akido or take a self defense course.

why avoid?
I can't do anything throwing ones cos me back, and I don't particularly like pain, so kick boxing's out, so what SHOULD I do instead?
