# Sorry to waste a thread
and you lazy lot are probably the last people to ask, but I'm looking to take up Karate in west London, and wondered if anyone knew anything about the sport, and could give me advice about joining a good club...
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:10, archived)
# your best bet
is to find a kindly old chinese gentleman, who trains you one on one. if you join a club they'll just turn you into a ruthlessly competitive hoodlum who'll stop at nothing to win...
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:12, archived)
# and you'll be ace
at painting fences and waxing floors by the time you're finished.

Oh - and you can start by washing my car.

# You want to join
The Golden Fist of Wo-Huang-Phat, its very good.
You ge to learn the five lessons of 'Phuang', break wood with your forehead and get to wear a natty green Karate robe.
That's The Golden Fist of Wo-Huang-Phat, West London, special rates for pensioners and Ninjas.
Its where I learnt my Love Ninja skills.

I quite fancied doing that too... my dad's a blackbelt in judo & used to be an instructor but i never got round to learning. Stupid me.

# I wanna
be a kickboxer.
I really fancy that - I knew a kickboxy guy in Uni and he was Nails. He scared me.

like Cynthia Rothrock, star of crap Karate films in the eighties.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:21, archived)
# but
you would though wouldn't you? Apart from the haircut. (Not you, Dr Phil, I'm on about Ms Rothrock!)

# I'll need to be reminded of her.
Hang on.

Edit: Yes.

Actually a search for her name on Google throws up a load of good pictures.

# I remeber seeing some of her films
years ago. I could swear that it was a stuntman in a wig for some of the more demanding stuff.

Look at those thighs!
Dr Phil, you too, could look like that.
Edit: she has a website...with Mpegs on it!!

just need to find somewhere to do it.
Did meet a woman on a train once with the biggest and most hideous bruise I'd ever seen, on her arm.
She got that from kickboxing. nice.

# I did Tae Kwon-Do for 3 1/2 years
but I didn't do Karate. Tae Kwon Do is one of the most popular martial arts originated from South Korea. It's awesome, semi-contact (so you don't get the shit kicked out of you weekly when you first start) and it's really powerful. At my peak I was breaking through bricks with the side of my hand (forgotten the Korean for that now). It's ace, and you get to jump around lots.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:16, archived)
# why did you stop?
?
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:18, archived)
# I got to a point
where I was getting frustrated about the learning curve. Normally you start off slow and finish off fast, right? WRONG!
The gap between the first 6 belts was 3 months, the last two were 6 month gaps. I got 8 belts out of 10, so I'm not that bad.

*edit* and I also achieved what I went there to achieve in the first place. To be able to defend myself (and practically cripple the other guy!) and break through bricks and stuff with just my hands/feet/elbows etc...

# I did Kung Fu
as a wee bairn and I fucking hated it. It was shit.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:21, archived)
# I did kung fu,
I didn't like it cos my mate's arms were too fuckin bony and he gave me bruises from blocking very very hard.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:28, archived)
# Karate is macho bollocks
You should take up a good internal art, such as Kung fu, Tai Chi or Aikido, where its less about pure strength, and more about technique.

# kung fu will fuck you up
it really gets you fit and toughens you up.

big time.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:30, archived)
# depends what you want.
Karate and those arts are good fun, and great excercise, but in terms of self defence they aren't that useful until you get very good at it.

if you want self defense, learn something like jiu-jitsu or akido or take a self defense course.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:25, archived)
# Just wanna get back in shape
had an op end of 2001, lost over 3 stone since then, started running and stuff, just wanna carry on getting fit.

# don't bother with Karate, it's tosh
I did Kick Boxing for 6 years whilst at school in walton.
then did Shaolin Kung fu in Epsom which was the mutts but very painful.
and last year started Akido in Kingston which is very very cool but had to give it up after doing my shoulder in.
avoid Karate.....daniel son!
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:29, archived)
# why?
why avoid?

I can't do anything throwing ones cos me back, and I don't particularly like pain, so kick boxing's out, so what SHOULD I do instead?
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:31, archived)
# how about the noble art of 'Boxing'
the training will get you SERIOUSLY fit, even if you dont want to get into a ring.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:34, archived)
# if you don't like pain then avoid martial arts.
my mates missus does yoga, she'w lost loads of weight and is now well fit and supple.
then you can be like sting and do tantric sex.
Yoga gets you well strong because you have to hold the poses for sooooo bloody long.
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:35, archived)
# Apparently
it puts you at your natural weight. But you do get strong. (Well I didn't, but everyone else did).
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:38, archived)
# cycling, sir
gets you around cheaply, you look cool, dice with death every day AND you get to wear lycra...

oh, hang on...
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:36, archived)
# tried that
shit me pants too much - needed a fag and a stiff drink when I got home
(, Mon 6 Jan 2003, 13:42, archived)

and I've only ever been knocked off ooh, 3 or 4 times. And only one of those was serious.
