Also, I think the front page is going to look a bit shite from differently sized images in the Best Of column. Forcing everything into 280 gave a nice uniformity.

Has OCD.

And readily available source images are often less then 400px wide, so it's not as if everyone will just start producing bigger images.

Most of my posts are made with high-res pics and have to be shrunk to post them here.

Tbh, I've no problem with the 280px limit, it's always the filesize that hurts image quality.

and several sites that that generate random images using google, based on random or chosen phrases.

And of course, the old faithful Google. It all depends on the source you seek ,I suppose.
