This is a link post one for the superhero film haters
I don't get the hate, you don't have to go see them, and its not like they're stopping your preferred romcoms from getting made ;)

This is a normal post I don't think anyone is calling for them to be banned
But calling dull childish shit dull childish shit is fair comment.

This is a normal post At least the people making super hero films
aren't under the mistaken impression they're doing something important.

This is a normal post i hate super hero films
I hate super hero comics too, and super hero anything, because it is such a childishly shit idea pretending to be a grown up one, and endlessly repeated. You don't have to go and see them, but that doesn't stop them being everywhere, constantly reminding you that you live in a world full of idiots.

To my mind this is the best "super hero" film ever made:

Whilst "you don't have to go and see them", Hollywood seems to want to make very little else. Most times I've fancied going to the cinema in the last year, there's been nothing on to tempt me.

I did fancy that Birdman thing, but a really pretentious guy from the office said it was the best film he's seen in ages, so I decided it's probably wank.

This is a normal post Birdman was the worst thing I've seen in ages. A massive disappointment as I was really looking forward to seeing it.
There were a couple of good(ish) moments but not enough to redeem it and make me stop begrudging its very existence by the time I was halfway through.

This is a normal post I thought it was fantastic, like an exceptionally well executed stage play
terrific performances from all cast members, thoroughly recommended.
But if you don't like actory stuff and want muscle men shooting bad guys it's not for you.
(, Tue 24 Feb 2015, 13:36, Reply)
This is a normal post I really didn't get it to be well executed though.
I understand the stage comparison as there is the very defined sense of space it's all taking place in and has a ring of Mamet or Dogville to it in that way. I just don't think it was pulled off in a way that felt satisfying to view.

Did anyone else really struggle to hear the early dialogue too? Maybe that was the fault of the cinema I viewed it in and not the film itself.

This is a normal post there's a memory of one
Michael Keaton plays an ageing actor trying to make a credible stage show in the face of being best known for comic book movie "Birdman" 30 years ago.

This is a normal post They seem like a very easy way to make a film these days
lots of flashy graphics, jaw dropping action, and virtually nothing in the way of a script or actual story.

This is a normal post I don't care much for super hero films, but some classic comics
were pretty awe inspiring for me. Of course, I was probably 6 or 8 at the time, but those like Batman - Venom or Spider-Man - Kraven's Last Hunt are decent.
(, Tue 24 Feb 2015, 16:12, Reply)
This is a normal post But they *are* getting stuff made, aren't they?
Why would a studio bother taking a risk with an unknown new film, when they can endlessly "reboot" the same tedious bilge that they know will get a certain revenue upon release?

[edit] ^"stopping": Fucking google keyboard.

This is a normal post are they though?
Do you think Under the skin or Grand Budapest Hotel were threatened by Ninja Turtles?
Cinema releases are the same as the charts, if you're under 20 you probably enjoy most of it, the older you get the more you have to look to other channels for what you want. Luckily we have DVD, VOD, art house cinemas etc

This is a normal post That is a terrible argument: Both of those film got made on the reputation of the directors.
If they were starting out today, they wouldn't.
(, Tue 24 Feb 2015, 13:37, Reply)
This is a normal post sorry, I thought the argument was superhero films are stopping other films from getting made
Ok, The Babadook, that was the Australian directors first full length film, how did superheroes affect that?

I think blockbusters (be they comics, cars that turn in to robots, doomed cruise liners, blue aliens etc) are a separate aspect of films, like XFactor isn't ALL tv. Wanting more multiplexes to show obscure films is like wanting a new Chris Morris show to be on ITV at 6.30 on a Saturday night.
(, Tue 24 Feb 2015, 14:00, Reply)
This is a normal post I don't hate them, but I often think the sequels to "origin" films are a bit rubbish / of limited interest (liked the first Iron Man film, but not the sequels)
I thought I would like the (first) Avengers film (saw it last Xmas on TV) because it had good reviews, but I was bored at the end because there was no suspense / jeopardy (or whatever it is that tricks you in to thinking that Doc might not put that plug back in time at the end of BTTF, even though you've seen the film dozens of times)
(, Tue 24 Feb 2015, 13:02, Reply)
This is a normal post Seems like they can't see the wood for the trees.
Most modern major films are shit for the same reason - they are aimed at teenage boys and become generic as few people are rilling to gamble on something new. Super hero ones are in fashion, so you get loads.

There are intelligent super hero comics, but they don't tend to get turned into films in favour of the generic fluff that has been proven to work. Unlikely they'd make Red Son, for example. Or even a fun Bizarro one.

Comics are better, anyway.

Enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn't go and see one if I wanted to be moved, the same as I wouldn't go and see Schindler's List if I wanted a wank.
