dunno why it hadn't immediately occurred to me that these two would've collab'ed

But that's new to me. Not my favourite Louis Cole but still very good - I guess I need to go down the JD Beck rabbit hole now!

But that's a silly, invertedly snobbish take, which I realise. LC is kinda the GOAT.
It was actually someone on here who posted a Knower link, a couple of years ago, and now I listen to them at least once a month! Just 'Life' though, as it compresses their chops into more pop-ish structures and I appreciate working within limitations. The rest of their material can get a little too jazz, a little too 'clever'..

After such a great performance, hearing the conductor end it with a terse "Disgraceful" is the perfect finish IMO.
Out of curiosity, do you find tracks like "It's all nothing until it's everything", "Do hot girls like chords" and "I'm the president" too jazzy?
(, Sat 26 Sep 2026, 14:22, Reply)
There are exceptions of course, like the tracks you mentioned. I think it comes down to an impression of tightness. 'Life' was pretty tight, whereas there's a looseness to the rest of their catalogue which doesn't hit in quite the same way, for me.

Saw a version of them playing this song in practice with just the guitars, bass, drums & vocals - so I thought it would be interesting to hear what the studio version would sound like with that treatment.

But bugger me, their stuff since then has been samey as fuck. Not bad by any means, but if you've heard MHTRTC, you've basically heard their entire back catalogue.
Still nowhere near the level that the champions of monotony, Public Service Broadcasting have reached, mind.

I agree that they found their sound a long time ago. But what a sound.
PSB one about the spitfire and that other one about space had a few redeeming factors (“fairy lanterns!”), but yeah. I’m with you.

AI agents are just glorified computer programs. Hold the boards of the companies responsible for them accountable and this problem goes away instantly.
(, Thu 24 Sep 2026, 7:48, Reply)
“Move fast and break things” is fine when it’s your stuff you’re breaking. The minute you start breaking other people’s things there needs to be accountability.

Where do we stop with this? Is Microsoft responsible if someone uses Excel to make a spreadsheet for keeping track of their drug money? Hold car manufacturers if someone uses a car in a robbery getaway? Hold hammer manufacturers responsible when someone goes on a hammer killing rampage? The hackers used the internet too, hold the entire internet infrastructure responsible as well?
Or, more rationally, just hold the person who commits the crime responsible for their actions no matter who made the tools they used?
(, Thu 24 Sep 2026, 11:32, Reply)
If Microsoft are programming Excel to be able to hack, then set up a test where they tell it to go and hack and don't put sufficient controls in place to stop it hacking things it shouldn't, then yes.
Also, what's happened to that data? Has it been ingested and used to train more models? If so that's outright theft.
(, Thu 24 Sep 2026, 12:19, Reply)
I asked "Is Microsoft responsible if someone uses Excel to make a spreadsheet for keeping track of their drug money?"
and you also ignored that the internet as a whole is fundamental to hacking, it is designed to allow computers to access other computers. Without it, nobody could remotely hack.
You know very well that it is the criminals who are and should be liable, as shown by your wilfully ignoring the questions that highlight that.

You have to be very specific about the commands you give it, how you get it to ignore safety locks, and many other things.
Very similar to turning the safety off on a gun, pointing it and pulling the trigger. But we all agree it is the person who does that who is responsible for whatever happens afterwards.

What's the Roche limit and innermost stable circular orbit for a rocky body around Sag A*?
How much radiation could our magnetosphere handle?
Is our enjoyment time measured in minutes or seconds?
Where has Venus's opaque atmosphere gone?
(, Mon 21 Sep 2026, 23:12, Reply)
The radiation or insanely high tides. You might be safe from drowning if you could get to the top of a mountain.
On the plus side, to be in a stable orbit the earth would need to complete a revolution in something under 5 hours, so you'd be looking at almost five Christmases every day!
(, Tue 22 Sep 2026, 17:10, Reply)
Also the moon would be tugged around a lot more than usual...
Best case scenario would be ejection into wildly different orbits for us and the moon, ideally with the Earth being flung out farther and the moon being swallowed whole.
Seems more likely we'd both turn to lava then hit each other though.
I tried using online Roche calculators but the numbers are too big and my brain is too small.
