Right new thread.
I'm totally going to have a newsgasm today, the select commitees are going to be excellent later and the only thing the news hacking story needed was a body ( www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14194623 ).

And maybe some marital problems www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/18/mystery-bag-bin-rebekah-brooks

I'm bored of all this now.

You can be bored with it after tomorrow when parliment's in recess.

I'm bored of the endless hawking
of every minute detail. This is a pretty big scandal, certainly, but last week it was the Duke and Duchess's visit to Canada.

You can't get away from it. I'd like to hear about something different happening, not be constantly bombarded from all directions by analyses of all the tiny facets of this week's story.

It's *boring*

Hey, Kroney!
The 'news' is regularly fucking dull, and every tedious little story is eked out into an EPIC SAGA because there's not enough genuinely interesting stuff to fill the nosey, boring-lifed requirements of the mongs, proles and spastics who devour it voraciously.

On the whole if you read only the headlines you have more than enough to go on. Much more, unless the contents of Cheryl Cole's kippery minge hold a morbid fascination for you.

Hope this helps x

I stopped looking at news websites
because I watch television and listen to the radio. All the news bulletins focus overwhelmingly on the main story. If I add news websites on top of that I'd claw my eyes out.

Unfortunately I don't have time to take a paper in the mornings otherwise I'd do that instead. Obviously by the time I get home in the evenings, I've been battered by dull, tedious dullness and no longer give the tiniest shit about the rest of the world.

There was ONE good story I read today.
www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/egypts-indiana-jones-antiquities-minister-zahi-hawass-sacked/story-e6frg6so-1226097094549

This UTTER, UTTER CUNT has been sacked. I hate him with a passion - 'Egypt's Indiana Jones' is about right: a fictional knob-end with barely any connection to serious archaeology, he's ruined almost every Egypt documentary made in the last ten years with his wild sensationalist speculation dressed as 'definite fact'. Hopefully he will be executed.

It is nice to see the bad guys getting screwed for once
but my joy is tempered by the knowledge that while I'm pretty sure that Murdoch, several people in the police and quite likely people in government, were in the know if not actively involved, all will either avoid prosecution or if arrested, charged and actually convicted, get Jeffrey Archer style holidays before getting on with their rich, privileged and corrupt lives.

Long sentence was long.

(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:43, Reply)
Lets be honest, This isn't even about the scandal anymore.
This is about systematically destroying the highly effective and innovative global media empire Mr Murdoch has work so hard throughout his life to build up. Why shouldn't he own BSkyB, after he risked everything to provide a world class service to millions of Brits and Irish.
Would the BBC and the newly re-Ideological Labour look upon this so harshly if this was Trinity Mirror? Would they my Arse.
I struggle to see how this is the Fault of the Murdochs.
When a rape is committed in a rented house, one does not apportion blame on the landlord.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:19, Reply)
You can shut the fuck up RIGHT now.
Media concentration is quite a large threat to the country. Secondly, need I remind you that it is in the BBC's mandate to actually have reporting from a neutral standpoint. Trinity Mirror is just one part of a larger press, of which 80% is mostly Tory-leaning anyway.

If you want a simple reason as to why Murdoch shouldn't own BSkyB, look at Fox News.

So shit the fuck off.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:22, Reply)
If you want a look at why biased news should be allowed, look at MSNBC or one of the Democrat channels.
Left wing channels would cancel out the influence from Right Wing ones such as Fox UK.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:25, Reply)
You don't get it do you?
Fox News isn't just biased, they actively distort facts and ignore anything that doesn't fit into their warped world view.

And you were doing so well.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:27, Reply)
So do other Liberal news channels.
There should be a news market in which the public should be allowed to hear what they want to.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:29, Reply)
Bloody hell, you hit your head this morning?

(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:34, Reply)
Utter bollocks,
that's all fair enough if it's packaged as entertainment or discussion.
It's absolutly incompatable with the idea of news. Are you saying if you ask any watcher of news in America if they want to hear accurate unbiased news they'll say "no, I want biased inacurate news please" consumer choice only counts if there is a viable alternative.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:36, Reply)
y'know just because they are left of your position, does not make then biased.
I find them shockingly pro-authority and rather right wing at times, but I suspect this is because I am a commie/anarchist and they actually represent a fairly middle of the road viewpoint somewhere between your EDL sympathies and my desire to smash the state and instantiate a mutualist utopia (joke).
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:31, Reply)
I am able to envisage unbiased news, because ITV is always quite fair.

Thought you were talking about pure ITV ITN, which always seems a little over-sensationalised to me. Then again, I can never bring myself to watch ITV. I always end up feeling a little dirty for some reason.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:38, Reply)
Anyway need I remind you that Public service broadcasters such as the BBC and RTE have the sort of power private media does not
And they are often not neutral.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:28, Reply)
Mate. Let's get one thing straight here...
If you say "Need I remind you", no one is going to listen to a thing you have to say, because you sound like an arrogant child.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:29, Reply)
I think the point is that most people don't want a politically biased channel.
I want unbiased unsensationalised news. Not editorial spin, bias or anything. If it is dull news, I can take it.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:32, Reply)
Don't they?

As a sympathizer to Free Market ideologies.
Its hard to prove such statements until one has been one opened up and we are allowed to see it fail or succeed on its own merits.
There may be a large enough minority of willing viewers to sustain it anyway. This is the choice of and business of the viewers, and it would be silly to take it away fro them because "over 50% object" to something that doesn't affect them or any other unwilling participant at all.

A couple of points;
Rape is typically a crime of passion, and as such is rarely planned. Whilst one would not blame a landlord for a singular rape in his property, if a group of people were using a prominent, lucrative residence to persistently commit aggravated sexual assault over a period of several years, any landlord who claimed to have no idea of the goings on would have to be an idiot or a liar.

Secondly, the idea of Sky News becoming more like Fox News should fill anyone who watches it with horror, unless they are a complete fucking idiot.

:-)
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:39, Reply)
I thought that Sky News was okay to watch.
Same with BBC news. I thought they didn't seem to be too... extravagant or twisty with their coverage. But then that's coming from me, a foreigner.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:42, Reply)
No, they're OK as is
I prefer BBC to Sky because they're a bit less sensationalist. But Fox News UK, in whatever format, would be obscene.

I liked the lady on BBC.

Rape is rarely about passion
and more about control. Or power. Specifically, taking the power to say no away from someone.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 10:55, Reply)
Good point
I meant to infer that in most cases it is a spontaneous crime rather than a planned one. I hope.

(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:03, Reply)
Because, you blithering idiot:
1: Monopolies are illegal. This is what Murdoch is trying to get and this is why there was controversy over him buying out BSkyB before this scandal hit. BSkyB is our biggest broadcaster. Almost everything that is not the BBC is owned by BSkyB

2: Biased media is not a good thing. Even a schoolchild such as you ought to be able to see that. Biased media makes it easy for powerful people to sweep things they don't want to acknowledge under the carpet. Fox News, for example, has not reported a single thing on the phone hacking scandal, not a sausage. With all our media controlled by one man, nothing detrimental to Murdoch would get reported.

3: Rupert Murdoch is a conniving, sly, dirty fucking bastard.

BSkyB and NewsCorps business,yes.
Ofcom should not dictate editorial policy beyond enforcing the watershed, it can but it shouldn't IMO.
And when will the competition commission start to give a crap about the BBCs monumental hold over media in the UK. AFAIC it hasn't the moral right to touch the private sector until it has downsized the public one to its most effective and efficient size.

The problem is
that in a free market, such as you would like to see, one will often see one hugely successful and rich man/company becoming an effective monopoly, as dear Rupert is in danger of doing, left to his own devices. One might argue that he is clearly good at what he does to have done so well, and this may be true, but what he is good at may well be pandering to people's fears and prejudices, rather than providing fair and balanced news. Just because it sells does not make it right, although I suppose you would argue otherwise.

Can you not talk sense into the lad?
He's one of you're, all be it a young silly and misguided one, but there's no way he'll listen to me.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:48, Reply)
And I'm fairly sure he has me on ignore, anyway.
Probably because I confessed early on that I'm a Socialist.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:49, Reply)
He still replies to me occasionally
And I'm a self-confessed commie, but he rarely replies to me when I talk about politics.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:50, Reply)
He won't listen to me either
I'm far too lefty and liberal.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:50, Reply)
Well may I ask what faction of Tory belief you subscribe to.
Liberal (David Cameron), Libertarian (Portillo), Thatcherite, One Nation (Ken Clarke) or Traditionalist (Widdecombe)?

*splutter*
You? when I saw you in the flesh I was frankly surprised that you were not Ann Widdecombe based on your expressed political views. This is probably offensive in several ways, for which I a sorry, but it's also true.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:52, Reply)
Pfft don't be ridiculous
I hardly ever talk about politics on here and when I do I'm quite clearly not Anne Widdicombe, I just look like her.

I realise ToryBoy will now be wanking at the thought

I strongly doubt you could be quite that ugly.
I mean, that's a lot of ugly to happen to one person. You'd have to be extremely unfortunate in your genes. Statistically unlikely.

You look nothing like her dear girl.
And, no you don't talk politics much on here,(I try not to either as a rule, but I can't help it when FreeFare starts) but we argued about something a while back, when I may, just may, have been in a bad mood, and I formed that rather unflattering opinion at that time.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:58, Reply)
He's probably afraid to talk to you
because you're a girl.

(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:55, Reply)
Personally I don't care what your politics are,
so long as you're informed and capable of mounting a cogent defence of your opinions, which you're not.

You are doing, you're just doing the right wing equivolent
Being all radical and libertarian, and once you get older you'll become more conservative and Tory and settle down. I did similar I was more of an anarchist when younger (which is really just a less cunty libertarian) and as I get older I get more and more Marxist, it's just different sides of the political coin, combined with your inability to see that you are 16 and your views will change and mature as you do.
(, Tue 19 Jul 2011, 11:47, Reply)
Well I don't mind if my views change to a more traditionalist outlook, infact I'm expecting they will.

Sad but true.
Just try not to stop questioning and thinking would be the only favour I'd ask if I thought you'd do me any. Take nothing on faith and don't be afraid to admit you're wrong, because you will be, often.
