Have this one.

Morning 'lusty
How are you this fine morning?
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:11, Reply)
I'm ok.
A little bit blurgh if that's a word.
How about you?
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:13, Reply)
Not bad
Didn't sleep at all well, thought I was going to vom lots, but didn't.

I'm off to Glasgow soon with another load of my stuff. Hoorah. What a fun day it shall be.

You have the fun of work all day?
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:15, Reply)
Yups, I'm already watching the clock.
Roll on hometime!

Sorry you weren't feeling well. Better this morning or just knackered?
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:17, Reply)
I actually feel surprisingly ok
We'll see how awake I am after driving lots and moving lots of stuff. I'll probably just feel really tired tomorrow. That's how it seems to often work, which is fun.

Anything much interesting happening, other than having our lovely format back?
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:19, Reply)
Not that I can think of.
I did see a boy solve a rubik's cube in about 30seconds on the train this morning. It was actually pretty impressive! He'd solve it then his friend would twist it up again and hand it back.
Everyone on the train was just staring at him. he seemed to be loving the attention!

Edit: Morning al! Work without B3ta? Just quit!
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:22, Reply)
That is fairly impressive
I don't think I've ever managed one of them. Might put it on a long term to-do list.

Morning al, and goodbye. How comes your office has no internet now?

Well, I'm off to start getting ready and to pack the car. We'll see how much crap I can fit in it today.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:24, Reply)
Morning all
I've forgotten what work without b3ta was like.

I suspect I got a lot more done.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:25, Reply)
morning folks
how are we all today?

Rubik's Cube: there is a pattern to solving it, and once you have it memorised it's probably quite easy. Bedlam Cube on the other hand is much more rewarding. I've had one for almost 4 years, there are 19,186 solutions and I've solved it once...
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:31, Reply)
Morning Vipros
Oh how I do enjoy the odd fiddly puzzle.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:37, Reply)
I'm loving this bottom reply button!
I haven't played with a Rubik's cube in 25 years. But I used to be able to solve it in a couple of minutes. Vipros is right. There's a technique and a logical sequence of moves to doing it, but still no one has calculated definitively the minimum number of moves required to be able to guarantee to solve it.

It's still beyond the capabilities of our most powerful computers to solve this mathematically in a realistic timescale, believe it or not. I think they know that it's between 17 and 23, and that the best guess is 17, but it's yet to be proven.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:37, Reply)
I've seen a video on youtube
of a guy solving one in about 19 seconds using one hand

!!!

pretty amazing
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:39, Reply)
I bet he gets all the ladies.
With his fast fingers.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:41, Reply)
Morning all
That rubiks cube kid is very impressive. Took me eight hours to solve it the first time. Takes me about 5 minutes now but I can't get any better than that ='[
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:44, Reply)
I think the fact that he looked like Napolean Dynamite
would negate any advantage
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:44, Reply)
I learned how to solve it
aged about 12, using a book borrowed from my mate.

I dare say it would take a lot of relearning these days.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:48, Reply)
I was bored on an 8 hour coach trip from Cardiff to London
Bloody massive accident on the M4. I worked out all but the last part of what seem to be considered the "standard" algorithms - then I resorted to a sneaky peak in the book supplied with the cube.

Working on solving the 4x4 one now. Think I might have to cheat again though for the last couple of algorithms that I can't work out.

:edit: Yes I am really really cool. Never do anything geeky ever.

Morning my lovelies!
What's this? Another new spangly format to keep us entertained? Oh I do like it!
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 8:59, Reply)
Morning LVP
It's rather nice and shiny is it not?

Should that have been "It's rather nice and shiny. Is it not?"

Getting really funny about my grammar at the moment. I think TGB has got to me.

*in Darth Vadar style*

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:00, Reply)
Indeed it is!
I get a bit frightened of grammar fuck ups as well! I'm not very good with English grammar.
Or any other grammar come to think of it.
I am currently preparing for a job interview and need some intelligent and thought provoking questions to make me sound clever.
Any suggestions?

S'up bitches?
How you all doing?

Morning Kaol
You ok?

@LVP if it's questions you're after then Kaol's your man!
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:14, Reply)
morning!
Yeah! Kaol - I need intelligent sounding questions so the nice people at CEB give me a job and I can live in London and come to bashes and dance with Lusty and live with Mr VP and be happy.
No pressure :)
I also need the questions to be good as I'm wearing a skirt and forgot to pack a razor so can't shave my legs. :)
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:16, Reply)
I'm ok.
Surprised that they reverted the OT format.
I know some of my very favourite posters were getting fed up with it yesterday, so hopefully they'll all be happy.

I'm ready for Day 2 of the Espresso Challenge.

Lucy, can't you just buy a razor, if it's that important?

Erm... What's CEB, then I'll have a think.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:17, Reply)
@LVP
Definately go with Kaol's question.

In all seriousness though - What sort of position are you interviewing for?

:edit: Morning Herr Doktor and Kaol
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:18, Reply)
No time for razors
I don't really mind the leg thing to be honest - if they don't employ me cos of my legs then they are a strange company.
CEB = Corporate Executive Board - they organise companies to share their experience and help others with business problems. Kind of like a massive, multinational nanny who encourages people to share.
I'm applying for membership co-ordinator. I'll ask about structure, numbers of people in a team, daily routine, potential for growth etc.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:21, Reply)
Ask them about:
Perks, some companies give you a discount on "renting" a season travel card, or give you discounted gym membership.

Their plans for the future, are they in the process of expanding, or is the "general economic down-turn" going to effect them.

Er... Guess you could ask if there's any specific, non-MS-Office software that you'd be using, so you know if you need to do any reading-up in advance. That might impress them.

That's about all I can think of this early, I'm cold and I need coffee.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:25, Reply)
Brill thanks
That'll do. I can come up with the rest depending on how the interview goes but it's nice to have some preparation.
How's the coffee experiment going? Is it two espressos today?
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:27, Reply)
Two at lunchtime today
In addition to my morning, mid-morning and mid-afternoon cups of normal coffee.

The first half of the week is nothing.
Friday might get interesting, I honestly don't know.

It's not like I'm a small man, so in theory I should be able to drink vast amounts of coffee.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:30, Reply)
May not be the best question for an interview
But I'd be curious to know if the rise in popularity of social networking has had any tangible effect on their business or whether they have any trouble with people cancelling membership to cut out the middle man after they've used the CEB to help them develop new business relationships.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:30, Reply)
Kaol
Too much coffee will give you bum wee.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:32, Reply)
Hmm
I think caffeine has more of a built up effect doesn't it? As in, if you regularly drink a fair amount then it's less likely to make a difference. So if you're building it up over a week, would that make less of an effect as you'll be getting used to it?
I don't know. Maybe next week you should avoid all caffeine until Friday and then have some. See if that makes a difference.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:34, Reply)
That's why I'm only eating
Newspaper and flour this week.

I honestly don't know what'll happen.
That's why I'm doing this, in the name of science.

If nothing happens by Friday, I'm having a two-day break, then starting at 6 shots next Monday.

EDIT: Morning Herr Doktor!

Kaol: you are brilliant
that is all

Good Morning all
Nice to see the magic reply button at the bottom!

Shame that I still have a huge report to finish. I wish I had more 'Judge Dredd' style powers, so my reports could simply say "He's a crim, give him 7 years." or "He's a disgusting wretch, give him the lethal injection.".

Of course, I'm kidding, I don't want to start a whole 'capital punishment' debate!

@ Kaol
If you have no coffe over the weekend and then start again with six on Monday, then you'll definately feel it.

Me I drink far too much coffee, about ten cups a day, every day, for many years now!

A bit funny
How?
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:43, Reply)
Isn't Sunny D
Pretty much just oil?
Or it's got loads of oil in it, or something?

Anyway, I'm glad that you approve of my sacrifice to Science.

Herr Dok, I'll keep an average level going over the weekend. As long as it doesn't interfere with my drinking.

Hell Vipros
It must have been the sugar, that stuff is lethal, well it used to be anyway.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:44, Reply)
Kaol: you can now write "Vipros Accredited" on your papers
Sunny D has got a bunch of weird stuff in it

it made me go kind of twitchy quite a lot of the time. which needed to be counteracted with quite a lot of cigarettes, among other things...
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:45, Reply)
Do you smoke Kaol?
If you do, you could try the supermodel diet :D
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:47, Reply)
Well...
I'm not sure that I "smoke" in the strictest sense of the term.

During the week I get by on a few a day.
Weekends I smoke a lot more.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 9:49, Reply)
a few a day = smoking
:-)

that's just my opinion, but I smoked for a long while, and it was the same quantity

apart from the spliffs

something that has become apparent to me is that I could give up easily because I never smoked first thing in the morning. loads of people say that is the hardest one to give up

I could kill my brothers boss
My brother works in a reptile shop and his boss is usually a good guy. He was away at the animal show at Hamm in Germany at the weekend and just got back into work this morning.

When talking about the show he just happened to mention the fact that he saw Prevost's Squirrels for sale there at the princely sum of 50 Euros, the cheapest we've seen them for here is £250 each.

Now both my brother and I have been taliking about trying to get a few of these beautiful animals for a while now and he's been asked to keep an eye out for them when he's away at shows. This time he sees them and completely ignores the fact.

The cnut!

I listened to most of their show from Sunday night on the radio last night. was digging the new stuff, but I suspect that the production on the album will spoil it.

Do you think you will become caffeine dependent Kaol, or what? Any idea what the effects will be when you stop drinking lots of it? I'm intrigued to discover the results.

Not being a coffee or tea drinker, my caffeine intake is reasonably low as it's all from Irn Bru, or the occasional can of stimulant beverage when I'm a bit knackered. So it has quite an effect when I do take a lot of it.

For 8 hours a day, 5 days a week
for the last 9 months we've been listening to Magic.

I'm not allowed to change the station and it has to be on all times as "It's nice to have a bit of background noise."

I am so close to breaking point it's insane.

I had a blissful 2 hours of silence this morning before the radio was turned on. I'm actually close to tears right now.

Lionel Richie, The Bee Gee's, Abba and Spandau Ballet can all rot in Hell.

Id there anyway you can listen to your own music at work? Surely you can calmly mention that Magic FM offends you on multiple levels, and that you'd rather work in silence? Do you have an HR department?

Failing that, I'm pretty sure Magic FM is the aural equivalent of water-boarding, and thus you could argue your case in Geneva?

I never have music on at work. If it's music that I like, I sit and listen to it, which distracts me from work. If it's music I don't like, it annoys me, which distracts me from work.

I'm easily distracted.

The trouble with hip hop
is that the music, such as it is, comes a poor second to the 'message' in the lyrics.

I heard a track last night on the radio on my way home, which really irritated me. I've no idea who it was, but there was a sparse drumbeat, a one bar synth motif which was repeated throughout and some bloke with a serious attitude problem spouting some crap over the top.

Sorry, but I'm too much of a musical snob to appreciate that.

Edit - hello those of you who have just appeared.
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 12:44, Reply)
was it that song about riding a bike with no handlebars?
That is shit. But unless people have heard J5 and don't like them then don't lump all "hip hop" together. Modern stuff is generally rubbish but the old skool stuff is awesome.

I often wonder how much
of music is assigned to a specific genre to try and get "cool" marks. If a pop band split up and solo artists emerge they always seem to want to be classified as "rock" rather than pop.

I guess as modern society is so obsessed by brand marketing and image that people probably read far too much into classification.

Edit: And a tempo change into early Queen! Stone Cold Craxy

OK, fair point, TGB
but in order for me to say I like some hip hop, I'd have to listen to a lot of it to sort out those which I liked from those which I didn't. And given that I find it (OK, probably not all of it) really annoying, then I suddenly find I've got better things to do with my life :)

Good HipHop
I'm not a fan of most modern Hip Hop, a lot of it seems very trite. Having said that check out Saul Williams, he's what modern hip hop should sound like.

OK, I've just been on iTunes to listen to a bit of Jurassic5.

Now, I will admit that it doesn't get me really irritated, like some hip hop, and that the musical stuff going on in the background is not just a drumbeat and a discordant bleep every two bars.

But it's still not something I'd listen to for enjoyment. Each to their own, as I said.

ooh ooh I have a story about Dillenger!
At reading my friend asked a burger van man if he could borrow the mustard - well have the mustard - to throw at the lead singer of Dillenger.

The burger man said if he hit him he could have free chips.

A spectacular throw resulting in a perfect hit on the side of the head meant we enjoyed yummy free chips :D

Mindless Self Indulgence - The video that you mentioned was by Jhonen Vasquez. He made several strange and fantastic comic books, and also the cartoon "Invader Zim".
Awesome stuff.

Gojira - I'm going to see them on the first of October, as they're supporting In Flames.

Kaol's Espresso Challenge - Phase two complete.

Pop Will Eat Itself - Coventry Uni
Biohazard - LA2
Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth & Slayer - Wembley Arena Clash of the Titans tour 1991? (testament sucked cock and I threw a semi-eaten baked potato at the singer)
Pantera & Megadeth - Cambridge Corn Exchange, would have been the vulgar display of power / rust in peace albums
Anthrax & Iron Maiden - Wembley Arena
never seen a bad Metallica gig
Fear factory are great live but albums are rubbish
Ozzy - Ozzfest

worstest

Testament as above
Kiss - Monsters of rock
Coal Chamber - monsters of rock or ozzfest, I was drunk
Live, only did one semi decent album

edit: The only Sepultura gig I ever saw was when Max Caveleras wifes child had just died, so they played as a three piece with various members of other bands doing guest vocals and rhythm guitar.

The 20 odd drum ensemble of Kaiowas was fairly awesome though

.....this song is about how America and its wealthiest people don't do enough to help solve world hunger. The title suggests that crumbs from our table could help starving people in Africa. Bono indicts America for being hypocritical with these lines:

So here are some assorted quotes:

"Bono: Come to think of it, we still haven't been paid for Live Aid. "

"Presenter: Do you still see much of Bob Geldof? There's obviously the Irish connection there.
Bono: No, to be honest, I don't like him. I think he's very mean."

(It's worth remembering that Bono is played as an annoying Englishman who can't understand why the rest of the band persist in putting on Irish accents. )

are getting a trifle thin, any more and I might have to take you all into custardy

we used to work in a sales team, whenever anyone said "bear with me please sir/madam" the rest of the team did the whole "raaa-aah" bear hands thing.

I think I was about 27 at the time.

@TWW
I have the Polar opposite opinion, we should carry on!

@Halfy: I think that kind of behaviour is to dull down the tedium a little bit... ;)

G'night Clendrix, Labia
continuing on the animal theme, but for real now, my friend is about to buy her 4 year old son his first pet and is looking for (sensible) suggestions.

My offer to gift him a pet rock not having gone down too well, she wants something easy to look after, without sharp teeth (!) and which will live for a reasonable length of time ....

So, any suggestions??

Really, really easy.

If they've got the space, chickens are awesome.

Evening
I am returned, and on a proper computer again. What a fun day it has been, driving in the rain, and spending far too much money in a supermarket. Woot.

Scolex
"The knoblike anterior end of a tapeworm, having suckers or hooklike parts that in the adult stage serve as organs of attachment to the host on which the tapeworm is parasitic."
