Long thread is long
Guilty pleasure music. What do you dance around your kitchen to when you're sure no-one is likely to walk in and catch you in the act? What cheesy pop always puts a smile on your face even though you wouldn't admit it your face? Do you, be honest, actually quite like Coldplay?

Mine's Girls Aloud.

Alt Q - The Show or Something Kinda Ooh?
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:55, 307 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
I don't mind coldplay actually.
but the idea I should be embarrassed by who I like and dislike seems very strange to me.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:56, Reply)
I concur
Hence my admitting to loving Girls Aloud in a public forum populated almost entirely by bastards

No offence
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:57, Reply)
It is strange, you shouldn't be persecuted for who you like
But still, Coldplay?!
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:57, Reply)
Yeah they're alright,
I haven't bought any of their albums but I don't start having a massive spastic fit if they come on the radio.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:59, Reply)
Um
I actually own a copy of X&Y

A chronic case of buying an album for one song. But it is a belter of a song
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:00, Reply)
I have Death and all his friends
Just for Viva la vida and Violet Hill. And I fucking hate Coldplay. Well, I don't, I just despise Chris Martin for being all that's fucking wrong with tofu-wearing yoghurt-knitting Islington psuedohippies.

Although, Pendulum's version of Violet Hill is miles better.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:07, Reply)
It is indeed
a mighty fine version....
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:09, Reply)
Fuck yeah
That cover persuaded me that Pendulum can literally make ANYTHING good

Their cover of The catalyst also knocks Linkin Park's version into a cocked hat
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:16, Reply)
It's Linkin Park, though
so it's a very big hat that's not very cocked and not at all hard to knock them into...
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:19, Reply)
I liked their collaboration with Jay Z
embarrassingly
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:20, Reply)
I hate Numb/Encore.
When it comes on, I will enthusiastically sing and dance to the Numb part, and then stop and stand stubborn when the Encore bit does.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:21, Reply)
Hahaha! I love this!

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:23, Reply)
I was impressed that Linkin Park managed to elevate Jay-Z above his usual level of "godawful shite"
My crowd at Rawkus absolutely LOVE the Points of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer mash-up. Still. After 6 years.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:30, Reply)
It's the best one on the EP though

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:31, Reply)
I just put them back on my iPod, I heart a bit of Linkin Park shouting
I think it was seeing Chester in Crank II, he made me laugh and reminded me that I heart them.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:33, Reply)
I bought the first album
but I got bored of it quite quickly. Occassionally I hear songs off it and go "that's nice"
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:01, Reply)
I don't like them

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:02, Reply)
Shall we just pretend we spent the next 50 minutes arguing about it?

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:03, Reply)
Sure, I have work to do

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:06, Reply)
Excellent, I won by the way.

I'm a gracious loser
But remain unconvinced.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:23, Reply)
I know - I've seen your clothes.

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:48, Reply)
I have a soft spot
for a bit of cheesy pop. But then, I listen to all sorts of weird shit. Top pop tune of the moment is 'Fuck You' by Cee Lo Green - so damn catchy.
I have no idea what your alt q is about.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:57, Reply)
oh i liked that
shake it like a polaroid pikcha, one.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:58, Reply)
There is no shaking it like a polaroid picture in that song.
He may have sung that as well though, I have no idea..
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 14:59, Reply)
he is one of the guys who was in that band

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:00, Reply)
No he's not
Cee Lo green was in Gnarls Barkley. Outkast were responsible for "Hey Ya", the polaroid picture shaking song. Their members were Andre 3000 (who actually wrote and recorded Hey Ya on his own, as part of the bands double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, in which each band member recorded as a solo artist) and Big Boi.

So there
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:02, Reply)
then why have I got them all mixed up
if I remember all that shit and then forget something important as a result, you are in so much trouble
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:03, Reply)
There's no point remembering that sort of thing
As long as you have me and Berk to remind you
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:06, Reply)
I have a sponge brain
it will remember that shit but not things like when I have to do 70 reports by, or what the hell anyone's name is
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:08, Reply)
I have a brilliant memory for random shit
and just a shit memory for everything else. Excellent for pub quizzes but really not so great when you are drunkenly trying to tell someone what exactly it is you do for a living.

how did you do?
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:12, Reply)
It's filming on December 2nd
I get to go to GLASGOW

Brilliant.

I also have to take three changes of clothes for wardrobe to approve!
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:18, Reply)
I would go for something red and sparkly.

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:22, Reply)
No sequins allowed, sadly
No stripes, no spots, no checks, no white, no black, no pastels, no logos, no brands

Which rules out... everything I own

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:23, Reply)
How long after filming until it gets shown?

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:30, Reply)
No idea as yet
2 months or so probably. Will let you know the broadcast date as soon as I do.

Provided I win.

Well don't spoil the surprise, but let me know if I need to watch more than the first 5 minutes of it! :)

Cee Lo Green
was the singer for Gnarls Berkley. 'Shake it like a polaroid picture' is from 'Hey Ya' by Outkast.

EDIT - Darth beat me to it. But then he is a DJ..

Betty Boo, where are you baby?
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:02, Reply)
Betty Boo "Boomania" was the first album I bought with my own money
I was 12 or 13, and boy did she give me new feelings that were different and strange...
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:04, Reply)
Was that feeling
'I've just blown a tenner of my own money'?

I too had a copy
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:06, Reply)
I bought it on tape, so it was only £7
I played it on my personal stereo until it warped, and then played it some more.

If ever my life depends on reciting the lyrics to "I cant dance (to that music you're playing)" I will probably be ok.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:14, Reply)

For someone who wasn't even in primary school when the 80's ended
my knowledge of 80s pop (and early 90s, in the case of Betty Boo) is pretty encyclopaedic.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:31, Reply)
80's and 90's is my era.
Love it!
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:34, Reply)
I was gutted I was too young
to really enjoy early 90s music and the britpop scene when it happened. Pop music when I was a teenager was shite.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:36, Reply)
I've not really moved past the Indie/BritPop days.
Which isn't a good thing.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:39, Reply)
It's not really a bad thing either
given some of the shite that came thereafter.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:41, Reply)
I like Lady Gaga.
I've had to listen to her because my pole students requested a routine to one of her songs and I really like her. I also love Kylie.

I'm not allowed to dance around the kitchen. I'm not allowed in the kitchen.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:03, Reply)
I was going to say Lady Gaga
Bad Romance is a fucking TUNE.

(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:34, Reply)
The one you filmed me doing
Carousel but with straight legs, into pike back wrap into chair.
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:39, Reply)
It's pretty hard,
I would just work on keeping your legs together (fnar) and really whipping them around so you can get the whole spin in before getting too low to the ground. I find really throwing myself into the carousel helps, the more fling the easier it is to stay off the ground
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:43, Reply)

See, as far as I am concerned
"Sugar" are a fucking top band from the early 90's what had that Frank Black from them Pixies in.

Not a song by SoaD. But hey, we've establised I'm old.

But get hold of "Copper Blue" if you can. One of the best albums made by man or beast.

a couple of the proper goths in our old indie club
used to do this mad angular dance, they'd be all knees and elbows, it was a wonder to behold
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:26, Reply)
haha I love goths who get proper involved in the music
Especially during Chop Suey, they'll be all moshy and headbangy during the heavy bits and when he starts singing "When angels deserve to die" they'll all raise their arms up and look angsty and start swaying. LOL
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:36, Reply)
The Zone used to be good for this
but it wasn't just the Goths, there were a lot of us who totally cut some rug on the dancefloor (I just learned this phrase, I hope I used it correctly).
(, Thu 28 Oct 2010, 15:41, Reply)
you only just learned that phrase?
It's in Under The Sea in The Little Mermaid!

My favourite cover that I have
is of "Should I Stay or Should I Go" being covered by Ice Cube and Mack-10.

It puts a whole new persepective on the song.

Interesting
Not heard those.

I'm sure somewhere I've got a cover version of Olivers Army by Elvis Costello being performed by a Russian reggae band who clearly have no idea what the lyrics mean, or how they should be pronounced / sung.

I love his cover of Down With The Sickness
but my favourite serious cover is Stevie Wonder's We Can Work It Out.

As at the previous gig the lead singer had stagedived into the crowd without actually checking how many people were in the crowd. If it's about 50, the end result tends to be you hitting a concrete floor from about 8 feet up, and he broke his shoulder.

The lead singer was called Jizzy Pearl, curiously.

But i do have a soft spot for new romantic progressives, Japan. Some fucking cracking tracks. Mike Karn was a great bass player and David Sylvian had a very distinct voice that added an edge that latter day wannabees, Duran Duran certainly never had.
