Claims he can't afford a holiday during actual school hols. Correction, he can't afford the holiday he WANTS. Plenty of other holidays available, you cunt. Also, pieces don't go "up" in school hols. It's called peak and off-peak, and I can't believe that idiots fail to grasp this most basic of economic things. If anything, pieces are lowered in the off season to encourage bookings. This is a normal post From what I remember of the original story was that he objected to treated as a criminal for doing so.
To be clear the £60 fine is a penalty notice given instead of prosecution because you've broken the law.
The local education could decided to take you to court instead where the fine could be much higher and you'll get a criminal record.

But it's a nice little earner for them as tens of thousands are issued each year. So they'll keep on fining instead probably.

So they are saying it's mega harmful to the child but won't use they're full powers to prosecute and try and stop it happening.

Which has landed her with PCOS, Rheumatoid Arthritis and other bits and pieces so far. Chances are she'll live a normal lifespan, but she's definitely much more likely to develop a terminal disease and pop her clogs earlier than I am.

And neither of us have ever had the desire to reproduce anyway. I can barely look after myself and we've agreed that if we ever reach a point in our relationship where we're so bored that we think having a child might be the only way to salvage what's left, we should just split up.

the ideal, is that you meet someone, and your combined experiences of the world are usefull to raise, or at least start, the next generation off with a good idea of how to function and how to improve.

it's rather selfish to think that this life is just for you and what you can get out of it, and not to think "if people where a bit more X the world would be a better place" and then work really hard (and parenting is hardwork) to instill those values in someone.

now, as i said thats the ideal, and humans aren't perfect so people end up having them for all sorts of terrible reasons and imparting alsorts of horrible things... which is why it's a responsibility of the kind, the nice, and the wise to have children, to impact the damage.

now obviously if your partner is infertile you have had that stripped away from you, but to then right-off the whole thing as a product of boredom, honestly, is churlish.

This is a normal post I've felt this way ever since being introduced to the concept of reproduction.
It wasn't exactly 'stripped away' from me. If anything, it was an enormous relief to discover my partner was infertile (she had known for some time before we met) and that she shared my opinions on reproduction.

Are you really claiming that choosing to not reproduce is selfish? It's not up to the next generation to fix our wrongs. If that was the case, we'd never get anything done, because the next generation would just rely on the next.
Spend less energy on making kids and more energy on fixing the world if that's really your end game.

taht not having a kid is something you should regret. But.

I had a fulfilling life before we had a kid. Now my son is the most amazing, interesting, puzzling, weird, cute little human and keeps me busy, entertained, wondering, happy and sometimes exasperated and sleepless.

Having a kid has meant all other things in life went on the back-burner: reading, skating, meeting friends, watching fantastic fiction. Because the responsibility to take care of my son takes precedence over and leaves little time for all the other things. But hey: its also a lot more interesting and rewarding then the other things.

Just saying. Someone should cheer for team parent in this thread.
I wish i had known it was this much fun 10 years ago, we might have had time to try for another one.

Private schools operate as businesses, so why should they not be taxed as such? The tiny amount of 'charity work' they do does not justify not paying VAT.

Near us is Eton and they own Dorney Lake, where the Olympic rowing was held. Dorney Lake is run as a profit center for Eton and they rarely give free access.

The amount of tax is tiny compared to getting Facebook or Google to pay what they owe, however.

This is a normal post But increasing private school costs will mean less parents can afford to send their children there which in turn will increase the pressure on state schools.
It's a similar argument with private health care, people who can pay for their own treatment shouldn't be discouraged from doing so as it frees up NHS resources.

Using Eton as an example is not particularly helpful as they're not really representative of private schools in general.

they stagger half terms and school holidays a bit, regionally. This means that they don't all overlap completely. This reduces the full extent of the demand for family holidays, thus the supply is greater, so the prices don't fluctuate as wildly as they do over here. Plus they all take the whole of August off and will only work a thirty five hour week. That's why their economy is booming and unemployment is so low.

However a simple idea that could help parents and their budgets like staggering school holidays will surely be vehemently opposed by the NUT as an abomination.

Also you clearly have no understanding of super basic supply and demand economics. You posit that the outcome of a variance is its cause. Batshit mental.

I think this is an overreach in the powers of the state over the powers of parents. 40 years ago the state was trying to force children just to attend school, which seems reasonable, but fining someone over a weeks holiday seems overboard, especially when they allow things like homeschooling and religious education which to me have far more potential to fuck up (or literally fuck) the younglings, compared to a week in florida.

There is discretion from both the school and council. It is just tough luck if they don't apply it. These parents moaning about it...there are plenty of unfair laws go visit your MP and try to get them changed or face the consequences rather than stamp your feet about it.
