I've lived on my todd for 6 years.
I'd rather be haunted by ghosts than any of my previous co-habitants!

Alright Mr Woodside?
Did you know that there are some enormous houses in Birkenshaw?

I've just done one today - kept finding strange rooms and I've only just finished writing the blighter up.

Bit of a shame really - I could spend ages doing that garden nicely but it'll just be left to go to weeds.
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:17, Reply)
There are indeed. It's one of the blue spots in Batley & Spen.
A year or so ago there was a big old bugger on Whitehall Road East that was up for sale at some outrageous asking price even though it literally looked as if it had been hit by a bomb.

Amazingly, someone actually bought it.
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:22, Reply)
This was a good house
If you like 70's style houses.

I'd always thought of Birkenshaw as smaller houses.

About 25% of my work is Spen Valley at the moment and there's some good bits.

Just be sure to lock your vehicle if you're in Littletown or Windy Bank.

(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:34, Reply)
Not much call for me there
I start at £80 and nobody is going to pay £80 to confirm that there are still internal walls.

I've just bought a new car so the knacked up Y plate Suzuki is my work car now. You'd have to be a severe mentalist to nick that.
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:40, Reply)
There are a few houses like that round by me.
I live in a lovely part of York. If you've got the means I can find you some great houses that need renovating. You'll make a tidy packet.

Maybe this time next year, but I can't afford York.

From where to where?
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:18, Reply)
Uxbridge to Guildford
M40, M25, A3. Usually takes about 45 minutes.

I had to go through Woking in the end. The horror.
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:23, Reply)
I'll give you a bit of sympathy then
Mainly for the Woking thing - if you can find a pub in Woking I'll give you a prize.

My M25 best was five hours in the same place - just before the A23 junction.
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:26, Reply)
I can find pubs in Woking, no bother
Pubs in Woking that aren't full to the rafters with BNP supporters, however, different matter.

The M25 was nose to tail from the M3 to well beyond the Woking junction. General rule is if it's slow to Woking, it's the A3 doing it. So I bailed.

(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 21:23, Reply)
I hate motorways in the rain
people drive at 60 miles an hour even in light rain. It's ridiculous.

They do this because they're driving as close to the car in the front as they would in the dry and they're scared of hitting them. I can't understand where these people learn to drive.

Yup, that's some nasty shit right there. Apparently I need to chew some parsley in the morning.

Just watched Scott Pilgrim while the wife was in the bath (not her kind of film) and we've just started to watch The Thing for the gajillionth time. I have low expectations of this remake/prequel affair about the Norwegians due out this year. If I can get them low enough I might just enjoy it.

I have not seen either of those films
sounds like a pleasant evening, though

It's not been too bad Cappy
Scott Pilgrim is an acquired taste but The Thing is essential viewing for people with eyes. Oh, and ears, great Ennio Morricone soundtrack going on there.

I'm not sure how I ever missed it
except that I seem to have missed seeing many films

I'm a certifiable film geek but there are still a number of supposed classics that I haven't got around to watching yet
Gone With The Wind, The Wild Bunch, Seven Samurai and City Of God (although I have this one on my tivo box) spring to mind. A friend of mine prides himself on never having seen a Star Wars film.

i find it hard to commit to watching a film
although I find the same of TV programs nowadays. I blame youtube - more than 30 seconds! too long!

Evenin all, anyone still up?
Just back from Skeptics in The Pub and thinking I need a new (second hand) laptop. any recommendations around the £200 mark?

I've stuck to HP for both desktop and laptop lately and haven't had a problem yet
..but that could be just me. They're not overly expensive new you should be able to get a second hand one for that. I'm just speaking from my own experience though, others may have a better overall picture.

Without any direct experience of Apple products..
..I still view them as the ultimate 'shiny shiny' products and chuck a half-hearted sneer in their direction. I can't afford to find out if I'm wrong anyway.

Might have a look, having a hard time comparing prices
I looks like I'll have fun finding a similar spec second hand one for the price I paid for this thing new 3 years back, which seems odd, I'll have to work out where I bought it from, John Lewis I think....

Do you want it to last more than a year or so?

(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 22:52, Reply)
I'd like another couple of years, I reckon I bought this in January 2009
It can be big and clunky, but 2Ghz/2Gb RAM/160Gb+ HDD/15" screen is a minimum. SOme kind of TV out would be a big plus, but not essential.

Oh, and not too fucking shiney!
I fucking hate glossy laptops that get covered in fingerprints.
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 23:04, Reply)
You won't get that from a new £200 laptop, never mind a second-hand one.
If you want it to last, spend a bit more and get a good one. With the last two cheap laptops I got, the first one ended up taking ten minutes to boot into a usable state, and the second one literally fell to bits.

After 18 months the case had warped so much that most of the screws had fallen out and were impossible to screw back in, so all the removable panels were loose. The only thing that worked was the hard drive; everything else (power switch, monitor, keyboard, touchpad, hardware ports) had failed, and it would lock up if you left it somewhere too hot or too cold, or moved it, or didn't move it, or angered the knacked-laptop pixies in some other way.
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 23:37, Reply)
As I say second hand.
and I got those specs 2.5 years ago new for maybe £250, oh dell dell have some decent refurbed ones for about my budget.

what was that second on you got so I can avoid it?
(, Mon 5 Sep 2011, 23:47, Reply)
Packard Bell, forget what model. It was about £400 new five years ago.
The first one (custom-built by a third party) wasn't much better, but it got stolen before it fell to bits.

You probably can't do that now.

You might struggle to find teachers with sufficient wit to do that now - it's a dying art.

We'll be fine, we have Wikipedia now.
There is a reason I didn't go into teaching as I originally planned. My doubts about being allowed to teach stuff was one of the major factors.
