I am just about to watch Prime Minister's Questions
Have you ever had to contact your MP? If so did they help?

Alt: What would your manifesto be if you set up your own political party?

Alt Alt: Oh, lunch I suppose.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 12:01, 198 replies, latest was 14 years ago)
I think I wrote to mine long ago
so long ago it was an actual letter, not an email, I think I was all hot and bothered about some proposed identity card scheme. He wrote back agreeing with me, I have no idea if it made a difference. He was a classic secretary-shagging Tory of the old school if that halps: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piers_Merchant Oh, and it seems is now dead.

Alt: Calming down and just enforcing the laws we already have instead of getting all wound up and Daily Maily, based on recent threads. Oh, and the overthrow of the capitalist state, naturally

AltAlt: boring hippy food.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 12:06, Reply)
But we're all just so ANGRY, CQ.

(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 12:18, Reply)
Yes, I have noticed this.
But I am baffled as to how you can all get so worked up over a planning dispute that is in to process of being settled through the proper channels and a proposed tax relief that probable won't happen and will likely make very little difference to the world if it did.

Apparently this translates into: EVIL GYPO SCUM BULLYING PENSIONERS

it' really does feel like the Daily Mail in here today.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 12:22, Reply)
ah, let's be fair
Personally I was getting angry about a ridiculous mis-use of statistics in a horseshit report that was no doubt funded at the direct expense of some more relevant (and more to the point, properly done) research, which is something I have a fairly crucial vested interest in.

nah, this was that utter crap housing report
which one of the government's funding bodies will have paid a couple of million to fund being written. A bit more of an issue than some shit printed by a newspaper. It's the report itself rather than the news or implications surrounding it that fucks me off.

Did you know that when a high court judge says something like 'Who is Paul Gascoigne' or 'What is The X Factor', it's not because they are out of touch, it's because they need to get it explained on the official record so as to avoid confusion in the future.

And if that's not true, then write to Danny Baker, as he just said it on The Word Podcast.

As a bleeding heart liberal, willing to jump on bandwagons...
I have emailed my MP a few times regarding various causes and campaigns: wars, NHS, forests - that sort of shit. It helps if someone has already created a template email for me to use, but I do try to put things in my own words where I can.
I also have written in a professional capacity to the MP local to where I work, usually about new regulations that may affect the industry in which I work.
In both cases there have usually been responses, but they are usually stock responses and of little practical value.

I occasionally write to my MP
with the help of www.writeyourmp.com about whatever pressing issue of the day I do in fact have an opinion on.

Alt: Simple Solutions to Complex Problems. Once enough ignorant people have been beaten to death, a lot of society's problems go away.

AltAlt: Supercheapo ham salad baguette from eat4less.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 12:25, Reply)
No, but I was once taught by the MP for Southport, John Pugh
Alt: I'd allow decent graffiti to stay, but anyone simply spraypainting their name followed by 'woz ere', and other shit like that would be make to clean it off whilst wearing bright pink overalls.

Also, if any trouble were to kick off, I'd implement powers making it illegal to cover your face, and if anyone is caught with a face covering, it will be immediately confiscated. It'd be interesting to see how many were willing to carry on, knowing they could be identified easily. Also, anyone caught throwing bricks at police or anyone else to be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Alt Alt: Diced spicy sausage, onion, tomato, sweetcorn, pepper, garlic, chilli, sweet chilli sauce and pasta. Fooking delicious.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 12:42, Reply)
Playing devil's advocate...
Who decides what constitutes "decent graffiti"? The art world (or observers of it) often cannot agree on the validity of art.

How far would your banning of face-covering go? To include religious headwear? And I'm pretty sure that throwing bricks at the police is already a criminal offence.

And, vaguely related to that, does anyone believe that PC Simon Harwood will actually be convicted for his crimes?
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 12:54, Reply)
Something that has artistic merit, rather than just your name scribbled on a wall
Religious coverings are allowed, but as you don't tend to get many women in burkhas taking part in riots in England, I think we should be safe there.

It may be an offence, but aren't they only charged with 'public disorder' or some shit like that?
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:01, Reply)
Fairly sure it doesn't stop being assult and battery or GBH just because it's a copper
in fact isn't Assaulting a Police officer a specific offence?
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:12, Reply)
A more serious one at that
And back to my question about Harwood, I don't believe there has ever been a police officer convicted for causing the death of a civilian. Despite there being several clear cases of this having happened.
I understand that they do need some protection in order to be able to carry out their duties effectively, but a thug is a thug and should be treated as such.

Yes, hundreds.

(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:19, Reply)
At the last election was very difficult for me to work out who to vote for.
Was living in Battersea - highly marginal seat - labour by about 150 votes. The MP was a fucking good constituency MP - did a lot about public transport, homelessness etc - was interested in his constituents not ministerial office.

I wanted to vote for him, but I couldn't as it would have meant I was also voting to keep Gordon Brown in office.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:22, Reply)
This probably won't make me very popular...
But I am one of the few who would have kept Brown in office. Especially given the alternatives.
That aside, if your MP was "a fucking good constituency MP", that is a good reason for voting for him. Are you happy with who you have now?
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:30, Reply)

At the risk of perpetuating a pointless debate...
Would you describe a man who hits his wife as "passionate"?
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 14:18, Reply)
Probably.
I'm as much of a namby pamby lefty pacifist as the next man but I do not hold that ever hitting anyone is neccesarily wrong, Leaving the massive red herring of spousal abuse to one side for a second, I've been hit by an egg at close range, it fucking hurt, it was assault and while I do not feel that 2 wrongs make a right, I don't think a punch is any worse, while I do not say it's the correct response, I think it is understandable and most of us have lost our temper and done or said things that we might have chosen not to when thinking rationally.

I think the fact that :
a. He is married
b. He had an affair

proves the earlier point about uglies and lies.

I think that for me (granted, I don't know a huge amount)
He wasn't dragged into the expenses scandal, never really had anything hugely controversial against him, and seems affable enough, which means that while I don't exactly like him, I don't hate him either.

I am aware of the flippancy in your post...
however the "all as bad as each other" mantra is, in my opinion, part of the reason we have that cunt in Number 10 at the moment.
That and Brown's inability/unwillingness to play the media game.

Oh, and I don't want a kitten thanks.

One could equally argue that the reason we have a cunt in number 10 is that they are all cunts.
My last ballot paper was wall to wall cunts, I voted for the least cuntish seaming at the time and he became as much of a cunt s the rest of them.

(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:23, Reply)
You do, you deffo do. I reckon, on the scale of things, you're right there next to me with my self-published-award-winning chicken-salad sandwich....
... not only that, but a breast-meat one. But you're not quite high enough to nosh all the lovely semi-crispy still-hot garlicly/salty chicken skin, that's my perk, and to be honest, at least 20% of the reason I make it.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:26, Reply)
Not keen on the skin tbh. It's all yours.
I'm thinking of trying my chicken soup again at the weekend. It was lush the last time I made it.
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:29, Reply)
I would say "Oh, to tell you the truth, I don't mind if we share equal bits of the skin", but you could be bluffing and take some, which would be as devistating to me as eating a £4.99 chocolate catapilla cake and not getting any of the face bit.
I'm not man enough to bluff this one, so I'll say "Thank you, that'll be fabulous".

Put these in your chicken soup, trust me on this, you'll have to trust me completely. I swear to you though, they'll capture the heart of anyone who has them, weather's they're God's Choosen or not.

It's true though, she's not got nuts up to her guts at the moment, and she's the very definition of perfection, so you have to ask yourself, "Why doesn't Beege have an endless supply of cock?".
And although I could be wrong, maybe totally, it's happened before, but this seems to be the missing link.

May I just shoehorn in a vaguely related question?
Thanks, I will.

Did anyone watch "The Hunt For Tony Blair"? I have fond memories of The Comic Strip and was looking forward to it. I got round to watching it last night, but turned it off after 15 disappointing minutes. I'm not quite sure if I just wasn't in the mood and should give it another go, or if it was actually a bit shit. Could anyone advise?
(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:38, Reply)
The ad for it looked, as they say in the business "fucking shit"

(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:40, Reply)
I have recorded it but have yet to watch it. In what way did it disappoint you?

(, Wed 19 Oct 2011, 13:40, Reply)
A sort of "it's enough that we're doing this as a film noir pastiche and therefore we don't need to have any cutting satire or good jokes" way.
