Trade skills, engineering, and physical labour are not a second class route to employment, they are valuable necessities. Not everyone needs anything more than a basic Academic grounding.
Once we've got a world class workforce with every possible ability richly represented, then maybe we will not need so much migration, and maybe we can see manufacturing and production return to the UK on the scale it was before its decline in the late 60's, but this time efficiently, properly and privately run for a profit without the old militant trade unionism. Japan and Germany show we can make good stuff and compete with China.
