Enough of that shit.
I've heard it posited that this newfound unwillingness to wade into yet another foreign war indicates a change in this country's attitude to its place in the world. Perhaps this is a more realistic reflection on our own military capacity and indeed our importance/relevance. You might say that we are finally getting it into our heads that the Empire is gone and we are actually a pretty small country with no business in Syria or indeed any of the other Raghead/Darkie/Slav shitholes. Or you might say that we have a duty to defend the innocent wherever they may be. Or you might say any number of other things. You might also say nothing at all.

What do you say?

Alt: alright

Fuck action in Syria, I'm sure it'll come out that it was the insurgents behind the chemical thing.
Why is killing by chemicals worse than killing by other means? The Israelies have nukes ffs weRe hardly complaining about that.
(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 9:53, Reply)
Currently killing with chemical weapons is against international law.
You are approaching this from the wrong angle - we should strive towards stopping killing with conventional weapons as well.
Why can't people understand this simple premise?
(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 9:57, Reply)
Fuck that, killing people is excellent.

I think it's more to do with MPs wanting to avoid an Iraq style mess.
Not a reflection of public opinion per se.
(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:05, Reply)
since when did a single MP do anything to reflect public opinion rather than his own arse?

(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:06, Reply)
such is the nature of representative democracy
On the plus side, we don't get swamped with referendums.
(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:11, Reply)
yeah, but the problem with that is, every gormless cretin and witless spastic gets to vote

(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:07, Reply)
Also, we can't afford it
Our role is what it's been since WW2, stopping the Yanks wading in all guns blazing cos they've seen too many westerns and have no idea how any other country works as most of them have never even set foot outside their own state.
(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:14, Reply)
Plus we've only got about 250 soldiers left.

(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:16, Reply)
This is true
Also, yet another failure in attempting to impose a "state" on a collection of tribes, see also Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, etc.
I bet most Americans don't even realise there ate different varieties of Moslems (Sunni/Shiite/etc) and they hate each other. Chuck Israel into the middle of that and you have major shit just waiting to happen.
(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:23, Reply)
Jewish action star Chuck Israel? Yeah he'd sort them out good and proper.

(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:54, Reply)
If only America were as clued up on international politics as you, eh?

(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:26, Reply)
I wonder if it's about a change in the effectiveness of public opinion.
At the lead up to the Iraq war public opinion was dead against it so the politicians had to lie to scare us and push it through. Previous wars have been justified on the grounds that it would be wrong not to start one. Conshies!, appeasers! etc if you voted against.
Now it is much more difficult to tell us what to think because our opinions are all over the internet for everyone to see, including our elected representatives. The only difference between Iraq and Syria is that Cameron can't hide as much as Blair could so finally has been made to listen to the people.
Best thing the internet ever did.

I say set up loads of cameras and turn it in to a reality TV show
Maybe have TV votes on which chemical should be used next, or perhaps a vote to see which Syrian should be "evicted" from life. "Mr Assad you've already won the washing machine, video player and the cuddly toy, would you like to trade all that in for a shot at winning the still twitching corpses of 1000 poisoned children?"

It could run and run
(, Wed 4 Sep 2013, 10:25, Reply)
I don't understand rules of warfare.
Longs, shorts, rounds, claymores ok, but certain landmines are bad? Chemical shit is wrong, depleted uranium amd white posphorus okely dokely? Nukes acceptable as deterrent, but not to use? How about bayonets? Cluster bombs are outlawed now I think, they're still used. Bunch of arse is my considered opinion.

Part of the problem
Is that in order to show that the Iraq war wasn't about oil they have to pretend to be the policemen of the world, As brits in recent years we have pretty much opposed all conflicts even the Falklands wasn't hugely popular until Maggie and the Sun started banging the national drum. One of the great things about the modern world is the speed and level of information available and it is something that is increasing yearly.

TLDR
