Though I had a rather strange dream where someone close to me died. Can't remember who though. It was a bit strange.

Up to much this fine day?
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 8:51, Reply)
That is a bit odd.
I don't like dreams like that, I always feel slightly depressed the next day.

Just at work today, then off to the pub tonight YAY! :D

Boo for the pub
As long as the dream wasn't a scene of things to come when I take my friend out driving later this morning.

I am rather jealous mr pooflake. Not of your hangover, but of your boss being away.
Thankfully I haven't see mine this morning yet.
No doubt he'll be about later though, stealing all my oxygen, looking through my books and pretending to know what he's talking about.

I'm really annoyed
I've been looking forward to going surfing tomorrow like crazy, first time in ages and with my new board too

today looks like this

it's unfair I tells you

fucking work, gets in the way of all the fun

Ah, lusty...

The chocolate biscuits are set out...The tea is on...and I have bugger all to do.

I am indeed fortunate to have stumbled out from what I thought was the easiest job in the world...to an even easier one.
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:26, Reply)
I'm ok
but found that 3/4s of the way through my journey to work, the bottom of my jeans have a bit of crusty sick on them. Which means they were in the way when I got home on saturday, joy.

I've cleaned as much off as I can, but theres still a lingering smell :(
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:28, Reply)
I'd enjoy my job a lot more
If I didn't have to work for a man who resembles a weasel shitting out a pine cone.

That is rubbish Vipros. Work does get in the way of fun! Oh how much I'd love a 5 day weekend!

EDIT: Ethel, that is disgusting. I don't know if I should laugh or feel ill!
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:31, Reply)
@ Ethel...

Oh, I long for the days when I could wear jeans to work.

I have to be bloody suited and booted now...it doesn't suit me and I hate it.

I just don't see the point anymore of the pretentious culture that is suit wearing. All of the richest people and finest businessmen* in the world don't bother with suits and they've done alright...why should I have to put up with it?

*sulks*

EDIT:*and businessWOMEN. I apologise for my rampant, thrusting sexism. It's early in the morning.
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:33, Reply)
pooflake
completely agree with you

I like wearing a suit, but that's because I only have to wear one 2 or 3 times a year, makes it a bit special. At work at the moment I'm wearing a shirt with sleeves rolled up and collar way open, a pair of corduroy flares and no shoes.

I could be wearing jeans if I wanted to.

that's how I like it.

every other office in my building is some kind of banking or financial service so they all wear suits. they must think we are a bunch of scruffy weirdos. we've all got shit cars compared to theirs too, but the satisfying thing is that we probably get paid more.

and we get to see the looks of confusion on their faces when we wander out of the office clutching armfuls of random stuff, like oars and outboard motors.

@Ethel: that's grim, now you know it is there your sense of smell will become super sensitive to it
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:38, Reply)
I don't mind people wearing suits.
I just wish they could wear more interesting ones.

It's rather boring walking around and seeing everyone in black, grey and dark blue.
What's wrong with purple? Or green? Or puce?

Actually, fuck that. It'd be like going to work with Jonathan Ross every morning.
Maybe boring colours are for the best.
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:40, Reply)
Yeah its not good
I noticed it when I turned the fan off in the car. Now all I can smell is that!

Its dress down Friday, its not a daily thing of wearing jeans.
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:41, Reply)
@ Virpros...

'a shirt with sleeves rolled up and collar way open, a pair of corduroy flares and no shoes'.

You sound COOL!

God, I wish I had a sense of style. My taste in clothes and hairstyles consistently miss the trend time by several years.

I'm like the black guy in Boogie Nights...but without the fun of being in Pr0n.
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:44, Reply)
@pooflake
I find people who claim to have a sense of style end up looking like carbon copies of everyone else around them.

You having no sense of style makes you even more stylish in my book. Plus, you can always claim you're rocking the retro look.

Dress in what ever you feel comfortable in.
(, Fri 8 Aug 2008, 9:51, Reply)
that's what I do
dress in what's comfortable

I have a fairly strong opinion on what looks good on me which helps, so I just go with that. fuck fashion, that's just a way of conning people out of their money

I'm also sporting an enormous quiff at the moment which happens every few days more or less by accident. sets off the beard and sideburns nicely. :-)

Good Afternoon,

I am unhappy with the service from the traffic reports for Maps.

I have the latest firmware, the latest Maps and a very recent subscription to the RTTI facility.

The problem is:

I can start Maps, plan routes, search for POIs and places, no issue, but as soon as I update the traffic reports, whether on WiFi or GSM/3G, the Maps application closes instantly, or the phone locks up.

Is there a known fix, or will I get my money back?

-----

They wrote back saying

"Dear Ethelred,

Thank you for contacting Nokia Care.

With regard to your email, this issue may occur when your Nokia N95 8GB is using old map data that is incompatible with the Traffic Info (real time traffic information) Service. It can be resolved by updating your map data.

To update your map data in Maps 2.0, go to "Options" "Tools" "Settings" "Map" "Options" "Check for map Updates" (this is only possible if you have allowed the mobile internet connection in Maps 2.0).
If there is a new release of map data, the application will prompt you to delete the preloaded map data.

If the map data is updated, the application will display "Your current maps are up-to-date". "

Sorry if I need to explain what I've done *TWICE*, let alone what phone I have.

You are more than welcome to shoot them, but I prefer big sticks and kung-fu chops.

The fact they are now saying that I can't get a refund for a service I can't use because it says no refunds in their terms and conditions. Which it doesn't.

I'm with you on that. I'll wear anything, if I feel good in it. What I really hate about the whole debacle is when you go in to a shop to buy a tshirt or whatever, and the shop assistants give you that appraising look as if to say "what are you doing in here?".

Bastards.

@Lusty: Gingerbread men? You're made of win!

@Ethel: I am slack jawed at their ineptitude. Still, it's not really surprising, is it? :)

@PJM: What do you do? What do you want to do? What is your dream?

G' morning all
rather busy today so I may just pop in and out occasionally.

Following Pooflake's suit rant, I too am one of the booted and suited brigade. I don't mind as such, but I'm rueing the years and the putting on of weight. Why? Well, although the jackets still fit, I can no longer fasten the trousers on my purple, electric blue and bottle green suits that I had lovingly hand-made in the Far East back in 2001.

@PJM: I'm a coastal and rivers engineer. I generally spend my time making hydraulic numerical models of river systems and seeing how much they will flood. I've designed bits of lifeboats stations and stuff too.

Oooh, that's something I know very little about... Maybe you could apply for a company you really want to work for, doing kind of the same thing, bed yourself in and then go for a sideways move?

I'm an ex-bar manager, ex-investment rep, ex-helpdesk analyst, ex-recruitment consultant who is now a Marketing/Research Manager for a very small (in terms of employees) website. We do get a big bang for our buck, though, we're the world's biggest and busiest website for what we do!

I have a masters degree in civil engineering
which led to a job with an engineering conultancy.

civil engineering covers a broad range of stuff and I got a taste for the modelling stuff during uni, so got into that. found I've got a knack for it, so I'm now one of the top bods in the UK branch of our company.

doesn't lend itself to huge amounts of reward though :-)

With my l33t acting skillz, Mrs. Liveinabin's l33t State Management skillz and the combined talents of the rest of B3ta and some major financial backing, we could have a massively successful theatre company on our hands.

The IT people can do the IT stuff, the writers can write, the designers can design, the modellers can model, the musiccy ones can do the music, and all the rest can look at us adoringly. After a while, the theatre work will be going so well that we'll branch in to TV, and ultimately film (but we'll always say that theatre is our 'first love').

Perhaps the ginger fuhrer will back this once-in-a-lifetime venture?

It often seems that the singer gets all the attention, but one can either open one's mouth and sing, or one can't. Yeh, there's voice training, but that's not hard work. It doesn't make the ends of your fingers painful or your arms ache!

You're welcome, V!

I have no talent to bring to the b3ta theatre, except maybe a bit of writing and some hot admin skills.

My friend Vaughan sings with all the passion necessary and yet not one note is correct.

@HLT...

I too struggle with the thought that people cannot sing.

I practiced the piano and guitar until my ears bled to get any good but singing just 'happened'. No talent, work or practice.

So when people say I'm a good guitarist or pianist I can accept that as a reward for my hard work, but when people say I'm a good singer (and unbelievably, people do), I just think 'meh'

My Vision of 2012
By DiT, aged 28 and a half.

~The Opening Ceremony~

The Stadium is dark. The crowd are hushed with anticipation.

A single shaft of light pierces the night, illuminating a figure in the centre of the stadium. It is none other than The Queen. She surveys the thousands of people around her with an imperious air.

"People of the world!" she cries "Let the games begin!"

She is swept away as we are shown the first presentation, entitled 'A British Friday Night'.

Women fall in to the stadium, drunk out of their minds. Big, bald guys roll in after them, their knuckles bloody from fighting. The congregate in the centre of the stadium, and bang down seven shots of sambucca.

At this point, in a moment of incredible choreography, they vomit in to a channel in the floor of the stadium, creating a glorious river of multi coloured alcholoic puke.

Meanwhile, pub doors and alleways are erected around the performance area, and if we look closely we can see the men and women dissipating, meeting together for a quick knee trembler out the back of Ahmeds Kebab House.

All of a sudden, there is a cry of "YOU FAACKIN' WAAANKAAAA!" and all of the men and women lay in to each other with abandon.

This is the end of the presentation.

As the detritus is swept away, a giant ship rises through the floor. It sails majestically through the river of vomit and - yes! - we can see dancing slaves on the deck of the ship - reflective of Britain's inexorable link with slavery in the past few hundred years.

We see a long line of unelected spongers we call royals, indiscriminately fucking and killing each other.

We have a choir of as many as can be bothered singing "Two World Wars and One World Cup.", followed by "England, England, England".

It's now time to light the flame of hope. But the Gas has been cut off. A student with a Zippo has to hold it above his head for two weeks.

Surely, this will be the best games of all time.

That would be part of the ceremony. Everyone would be waiting without a clue what's going on. Then, this bloke appears and starts making excuses. When asked questions, he can't answer a single one.

About halfway through, he'll announce that the stadium will be spontaneously closing and everyone is to move to a new stadium. Of course, not all the exits will be finished and it takes ages to empty the stadium. By the time the last stragglers have reached the new stadium, the ceremony would have finished.

Nice idea, but it'll never happen. By the time the stadium is half built (in 2013) someone will vandalise it beyond repair while we're all down the pub.

You've put more effort into devising your opening ceremony than will ever be applied to the real thing.

That London can put on a good show? Are we really that rubbish?

Well, I say we. What I mean is 'you'. That's right, I'm using my Danishness to escape culpability should the whole thing go tits up.

EDIT: Shit. More war.

Don't think that just because there's a distraction going on, us newshounds aren't paying attention (we've got the Internet and that).

When will they learn?

Our internet access goes through the US head office, so the BBC wouldn't allow me to watch the opening ceremony, but I could watch videos of fat cats being on diets and the russian invasion. Neither were spectacular.

Well, it's simple really. Take being a loner at school, mix it with a bit of 'nasty y00f' and add a fascination for computers.

Result: No social life, and that time being spent learning about computers.

Luckily though, i have made up for the social life part - b3ta helped ;)

@Axai: Have been multitasking today. Sorting out stuff with my interviews while fitting in time for the olympic opening ceremony and b3taing. I'm also not going to tonight's bash, but only because I'm in a different country. Will be coming to the August 23rd one.
Your lifestory seems too familiar. Wish I had b3ta back in my day. Is having a geeky childhood really a pre-requisite for making contributions in the domain of computery goodness?

Edit: Belated happy birthday.

edit @spakk: that sounds like muchos fun. What country you in right now? See you august 23rd! I think it is a pre-requisite, i don't know many geeks that didn't have a childhood like mine... don't quite know why either

Axai, it's at the Old Dairy in Finsbury Park at whatever time you feel like going really.

@Axai: I know a few geeks who didn't have a childhood like that, but can better empathise with the ones that did. I did have some friends as a teenager, but they were geeks too. I'm keeping my location secret to reduce the chance of potential employers googling like mad until they find my b3ta posting-history, but I'll Gaz anyone who asks.

BTW: We call eachother by our real names. It's sort of like learning sex education at school. It's nothing you don't already know - they just have different names for everything.

@MM: I feel a bit left out from missing out when everyone went to their first bash and were all shy and nervous, but I did quickly fit in with my first bash (where everyone else had already met a b3tan before). I think the megabash will be a different kettle of fish alltogether from a 5-person bash. The first-bash nerves does sort of remind me of my first Internet Dating experience.
