# I didn't get in to next year

I've no idea what to do now. I suppose all I can do is currently wait for clearing or such.

Edit: Thanks guys, you all rule.

# Been trying to get into GMD at my uni for next year.
Got my UCAS update today, said "Unsuccessful" application.

# awww
*hugs and dick whippens*
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 12:59, archived)
# Ugh, the dreaded 'Unsuccessful'.
I still remember how horrible that was to see. Three times.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:04, archived)
# Indeed.
I've had it on every single CSM application. Unsure why I tried there so much. Not even that fond of them.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:06, archived)
# 1. Get photographs of the people you're writing to in compromising positions.
2. Attach copies to your next application.
3. Win.

# Haha :)

# I had The Slade, Goldsmiths and St Martins
was told I'd walk it. Oh no. BUGGER THEM!
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:12, archived)
# Damn :(
*net hugs*

I like your arts though :)
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 12:58, archived)
# I didn't know we had to apply for next year!!?!?!
I thought it was a given that we'd be allowed in on New Years Day :(
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 12:58, archived)
# Hahaha!
*officelols*
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:00, archived)
# Sorry chap.
Have a look at clearing, but don't feel you have to sign up for any old crap left. A year out may be a good thing.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 12:59, archived)
# Also this

(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:00, archived)
# I still don't want to go travelling or anything like that.
I'd just try to find a job.

# I got in to my uni through clearing, best thing that ever happened to me
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:02, archived)
# ^this
I had a lot more choice in clearing, and got into an even better uni

have you had your exam results yet?
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:04, archived)
# Yeah, last year.
It's an arts course. So it's based mostly on pictures and research and such.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:11, archived)
# Only problem is I'd think the course I want to go on fills quickly anyway.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:04, archived)
# I got into my Uni by ringing up the Law department
And asking if they had any spaces. I didn't decide I wanted to go until summer, and didn't want to wait till clearing to get it sorted :)
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:06, archived)
# Clearing is great and all that
But it can make you be a bit ohshitohshit and apply for anything. With me anyway.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:07, archived)
# That just reminded me
First time I went to Uni I technically didn't get the grade - I needed AAA and got AABBB. It wasn't until I rang up to confirm my place that I thought about it, and had a really worried few minutes when the admissions guy said "oh you didn't get AAA? I'll have to go and check..."

Not a good feeling!
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:11, archived)
# I needed AAB and I got CCE
It was pretty much a given that I wouldn't get in.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:39, archived)
# Unlucky!
Ultimately I benefited from taking on an extra a-level. I had a good friend who said I was a fool for doing it, but he got AAA and was turned down by 5 out of his 6 choices.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:47, archived)
# Bollocks :s

But yes, clearing I think is your best bet, far as I can remember.

have you spoken to the admissions folk?

you could dedicate your life to making things for the internet for a month or two. that'd be good :)
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:00, archived)
# Heh, was kinda planning on making internet stuff for a month or two anyway.
Well I've just e-mailed my tutor to tell him the outcome.

I'm back from the nether regions of updating my profile (and working *shakes fist*). It's scary in there, Marlin Brando just keeps saying "The horror".

# Cool
Do you play gigs or is it just for fun?
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:18, archived)
# Occasional gigs.
It takes us months to write a song, so we're always writing.

# Balls
1) Your pic is very pretty. I like the colours you've used
2) Clearing would be your next step with half an eye on taking a year out and slumming/working/travelling according to financials
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:02, archived)
# You should have a look at some of the other cat girls which were done.
I don't want to slum, so I'll be looking at working.

# Hang on in there!
If you can't get what you want straight away, take your time to improve your portfolio and re-apply.
Took me six years to finally get around to going to university after leaving school. Didn't do me any harm at all, having some real life for a bit. And your picture is lovely!
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:02, archived)
# that is thougherly arse.
i don't really know the uni system there, it seems different to here.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:03, archived)
# It'd be an idea to get in touch with whoever dealt with your application
And ask them why you weren't accepted, what you can do to improve your portfolio and what the chances are of spaces at clearing. This way if spaces do open up they're more likely to remember your name and remember your eagerness. They might even be able to suggest a similar course or other avenue you hadn't thought of.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:03, archived)
# I'll see who I can go to for the admission such.
My tutor may know, as I have been doing a foundation year at the same uni.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:05, archived)
# Aye, your tutor should know
Even if not there's nothing to stop you wandering into the department and asking people. It's a bugger you can't get in even with a foundation tear tho :(
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:09, archived)
# get a job, some proper experience doing it
and a 3 year headstart on all the suckers who did go to Uni and landed in debt by the end of it.

Put together an online portfolio of the sort of thing you want to be doing and send it to the sort of people you want to work for.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:04, archived)

Going to uni was a waste of time for me.

I didn't go to uni, but have managed plenty of people who did. Degrees don't seem to be as important as everyone makes out.

# i loved uni
it's really not a good career move, and it's a travesty that so many folk slog* their guts out there because they think it is. but if you want to spend some time learning stuff you're interested in then it's great

this is probably the wrong thread for saying so, but hey. my year out was also good (working, not fauntleroying about australia with the rich kids)

# I'll see what happens.
I think the main thing I'd be sad about is that I won't be going to my anime club any more, best part that.

On the bonus side, the people I met at the last convention want me to do a Monkey Island group cosplay with them. I think we should make a Murray.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:08, archived)
# There maybe a loophole there.
I used to go to a university club at a university I never went to.
You'll find most clubs don't have rules about people bringing guests.
Some clubs do limit how many time one person can bring a guest along but I just went again as the guest of a different person.
(, Wed 3 Jun 2009, 13:19, archived)
# If you didn't get in after doing something like that they're stupid.
Don't worry. That's the first, most important thing.

In a way it's a good thing. So don't worry. There's loads of options, work for a years and get some money behind you, do some charity work for a yeah, travel (I know you don't like it but it builds you as a person).
Whatever you decide it meant you've had a year to impove of what you've learnt in the foundation year and will put you in a strong position when you do go back.

I know it sets you back a year you did say a couple of days ago you didn't know what you wanted to do long term. In a way it's a blessing. You have a years thinking and developing time.

Most importantly

# Same thing happened to me
Got turned down for a design degree, got a job fixing watches instead.
Now I am working as a watch designer as head art monkey because I showed my manager my work.

Qualifications are helpful but not always needed.
