I'm in the middle of Taipei, near Da'an Park. And come on, there's some pretty funky places about, depending on musical taste.

There are some great little places. I'm just pissed off at the moment due to a nasty work situation (doing the old bushiban thing). You Taiwanese or visiting?

Ah, fair enough then.
And given the options, I'd say visiting. Been here a bit over a year now, but managed to avoid the English teaching thing successfully the whole time.

My first time in the Zone
It's well worth a trip. I usually go to Bistro in Shida, or 45 if I can't be arsed. Where's Laku Laku?
( ,
Sun 10 Apr 2005, 19:09,

Might have to head up that way then.
45, which one is that? The one down by Guting MRT?
Laku Laku's down by Sun Yat-sen MRT - out the northwestern-most exit, down the lane to the left, about the third alley on the right. I think. Something like that. Alley 7 on that lane. I've got a friend who plays guitar and sings there every Thursday night, so I head there every week for that. It's pretty quiet, and definitely more a bar than a dance place. Definitely.

Where are you from originally and do you consider Taiwan to be China?
( ,
Sun 10 Apr 2005, 19:02,
archived)
New Zealand originally,
and definitely don't think Taiwan's part of China. No massive political motivation for the belief, but having been to both, I really do think Taiwan is markedly different to the mainland. That, and I believe that any place's people should have the right to determine their own fate, and the majority here aren't in favor of being brought into the Communist fold.
( ,
Sun 10 Apr 2005, 19:04,

Yeah, I know that, most of the world recognises it
It's just China that refuses to see it. I'm in South China myself at the min and it's actually written into my contract not to mention this kind of stuff.

And consequently am wary of sticking my nose into other country's political affairs. I can only say that most of my Taiwanese colleagues would be aghast at the suggestion of being part of China. Although many of them consider themselves Chinese...
( ,
Sun 10 Apr 2005, 19:04,

Yeah,
but the thing that causes the confusion is that Chinese can be both a nationality AND an ethnicity. Most of the people I know here would call themselves ethnic Chinese of Taiwanese nationality.
( ,
Sun 10 Apr 2005, 19:05,

Yep
My students are really confused about it, though most of them (elementary school age) very definitely consider themselves Taiwanese, which probably tells you something about the future of the country. So you here long term then?
