I liked that
I didn't know of all of that even though I live in Helsinki :) There was quite a bit of talk in the news about how the snow is actually managed at the start of winter, when the snowfall was pretty insane. Most of the time you don't even have to think about it, though, the city's trucks start clearing out the snow as soon as it falls. I guess I might pay more attention to it if I actually owned a car.. Must be a bitch.

Shameless Family Plug (My sister made this)
Shameless cos I'm hunting for votes for something you probably haven't seen, BUT...
My baby sis was the designer for the Robbie Burns (Burrans!) Birthplace Museum, and it's up for an award and a click or two would make me feel even MOAR!!! little feelings of love for humanity in general and b3tans in particular. It's an amazing place if any of you are close enough to visit fo realz.
I know this is cheeky, but it's mah baby sista so I will take any amount of forum vilification for a vote or two =)
Thankyou!

Battlefield 3. Look about three posts down.
This isn't a funny link.
It's not even relevant to a few of you.
But B1942 was a major part of my gaming life and THIS fucker just got leaked.
I don't mind saying that a teeny-weeny globule of spunk is, as we speak, slowly dribbling down my thigh.

Bad Company 2 certainly borrowed a considerable portion of my essay-writing time from me,
so this one definately looks like it's worth keeping my eyes on.
It'll be interesting to see whether their loyalty to PC gamers last though in light of what DICE recently announced regarding the Battlefield franchise (see www.megagames.com/news/dice-cancels-two-pc-battlefield-projects).
Good find though; some mates of mine will have gluey pants when this gets around.

I'm with you, but Dice have always been PC centric. They were very critical of the COD and MOH series - no prone, no modding.
They've maintained that have a huge amount of autonomy and they'll make sure that the PC is the flagship release for BF3.
I mean, I'd rather play BF2 than watch some kid in MOH get a killstreak and 'earn an Apache strike.' I mean, come on.
Project Reality is a perfect example of what Dice allows modders to do to their engine (and let's face it, Desert Combat was a mod of 1942 that actually bettered the game.)
( , Tue 8 Feb 2011, 23:15, Share, Reply)
Im completely behind the whole Battlefield thing
I play codblops purely because all of my mates do (and because Zombies is a great way to lose a night) but I am always moaning that we never play enough Bad Company 2. Battlefield games have always been the perfect midpoint between cheater's havens like COD or MOH and (a bit more) realistic shooters like ARMA and Op Flash; they provide both the fun that you get from de-tagging a 12 year-old and the ultimate win that comes from progressive teamwork.
The only issue I have with this is that, like Crysis 2, a game that should be a PC title will ultimately be released as a console port as that is where the majority of the market is. It's a shame really, but its understandable considering that it costs me in excess of £600 to overhaul my base unit every two years to keep in with recommended game specs; it wouldnt cost me a penny over rrp to keep my console working with every new game.

As I use a laptop with a fairly archaic chip in it
I hadn't played a game made after 2005 for about three years. Then I went home for Christmas and played Black Ops on my little brother's Xbox. I felt like an Edwardian who had been handed a virtual reality set. Games are inbloodycredible now. I also had a go on Bad Company 2, and as this seems to be a newer take on that, I'm sure that at some point in the future it'll find a way to turn me into a dribbling potato.

Ooh yeah. Big Battlefield fan. BF3 will be a (rare for me) pre-order.
Looking forward to this. I like BFBC2, but the maps are too small and deaths are too random. If BF3 has bigger maps and more players, it will be awesome.

Neat article, read earlier
what's troubling me is to be blunt, the trillions of debt we as a nation now owe: www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/budget/7521426/Budget-2010-Interest-bill-on-UK-government-debt-set-to-soar.html Which, given I voted for labor the last four times, and beginning to wonder what the hell went on. Ringfencing 7% of our national spend on foreign economic aid is madness, given aide to countries so bogged down with religious culture where having ten kids might actually be part of the problem, yet have their space program is lost on me, given that's all tax that could be invested back into our own society, like affordable housing, libraries; laptops for chavs to sell etc
Banks, and bankers, on the other hand make me more angry; why they feel they have some right to enjoy simply monstrous bonuses when the taxpayer bailed them (and us) out in the first place is beyond me. There comes a point when you must realise avarice for what it is.

Fuck off with being 'quite nice;' two nations in Asia have squandered vast amounts of money developing and building nuclear weapons so the next war they have will be their last, when that money could have been slightly better spent addressing problems in their societies that create religious freaks like the Taliban and hardcore Hindu zealots resulting in maoist cunts, and probably some of the reasons why they hate each other so much, a culture of saturated in religion. I presume youre talking about India and
Pakistan but as you dont mention any names I cant be sure. Firstly I must say that the Taliban originated and took power in Afghanistan, which although it borders Pakistan and shares many of the same problems is an entirely different political entity. It does not have a nuclear program or a space program as far as I know. As for the "maoist hindu" situation you describe, the closest parallel would be Nepal - Mao abolished religion in China btw - which again does not have a space program or a nuclear capability.

who we owe the money to? not if its tied to gold standard, a finite commodity
at the moment the CBs have the power to create it times the actual currency held. a very dangerous situation. We neeed to start asking the fundamental questions.Th e problem is we are paying back money which is being borrowed (supposedly from ourselves) with interest. there is more money owed than in cirulation. It can only lead in one diretion.
A sovereign nation can print money, its own currency, without the CBs, at the moment the CBs are doing it and charging interest!
ask this question why are we borrowing from ourselves and paying back with interest? look into the Bof E 1976 act and then the 1998 act passed by Brown. very interesting indeed.

Trouble with a finite commodity
is that it runs out. And then you end up horse-trading over something meaningless. The advantage to not having it is that you don't need to mine a lot of gold to be successful. Instead you can have a lot of, say, creative talent or manufacturing and base your value on that. All that glisters is not gold.

I'm not going to labour the point
but seriously, look into what caused the 1930s crash in the US and the role of that CB, the fed reserve, played and the calling in of loans, the gold reserve act etc.
very revealing about the current climate
a key research point is to look at who actually makes up the shareholders of the B of E here in the UK and look into what the '76 and '98 acts meant. You will see just how private it really is.

We can print extra money, that's basically what quantitative easing was.
The Bank of England wasn't lending money to the government, it was buying other financial products to stimulate the economy.
The risk is increasing inflation, so it probably wouldn't be wise to repeat it now with inflation already high.

The other day at work we were discussing the mess that getting weetabix out of a packet makes (non stop action here at magnum hq)
I suggested a super size PEZ dispenser for this purpose. If anyone cares to make one that'd be great

Tobacco, flesh, and testing
A long, but well-written piece from inside the Bloodhound camp about the complexities of powering a 1000mph car.
Yes, it's from December, but I only just picked up on it and it hasn't been posted.

Dawn to dusk challenge-Patrick the Optimist
Dunno if you remember the link about Patrick, the 'face' of the MND association, wanting to paint 100 portraits. Well not only is he still doing that, but him and his dad have also done some very long flights for an aviation challenge, to raise money for MND research. If you want to see if they won 'an' award then watch.
I don't have enough words to describe the greatness of this man.

The Half-million island challenge
is a stunningly hare-brained idea. Its the kind of mad plan that get cooked up in the bar with a couple of beers in you.
Much respect for the idea, even more for actually doing it.
