at one point, when he's been locked up for years away from female contact, his girlfriend visits and he makes her peel her skin off so he can see her juicy flesh below. He stops short of asking to see her rings though.

# I found it baffling
the protagonist does something really odd with shoving tent poles into a duct that just didn't make any sense.
He's being followed by gangsters because he's carrying a bag of stolen cash. He goes to a motel, rents a room, hides the cash in a duct, goes and gets tent poles, rents the room on the other side of the duct, pulls the cash through and walks off with it. What is this supposed to achieve?
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:30, archived)
# he was hiding the money..................what was odd about that?
EDIT: your sig makes me think of this
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:32, archived)
# If he particularly wanted to get the money from one room to the next
why didn't he just, say, carry it, with his hands?
Edit: FILTH
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:33, archived)
# but if he is found then the money wont be in the same place as him
it was a while ago i watched the film though
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:37, archived)
# thing was (and here we go in-depth)
he put the money in the duct, to hide it in case he was discovered. he later, upon arriving back at the hotel, got the spooks that someone had discovered him, and so got another room (you'll note when he requested the second room, he specifically asked to look at a map, and then chose the room that backed onto his first room) so that he could sneaky sneaky get the momeny back, without returning to his room.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:37, archived)
# Oh ah.
I think I missed the getting the spooks part, which made it seem as if the whole process was part of the same bizarre and pointless plan to move money through a duct, like the duct had magic powers and it was some kind of holy ritual.

I guess he was working on the theory that the guy following him will be waiting for him in his room, rather than watching at a distance ready to burst in on him. I had no way to know the character was thinking that, though, I'm not a mind reader.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:42, archived)
# haha we've gone too far in the explananiton of movies haven't we?
i just loved the film, couldn't find fault.

I'm off to stare at those squirrels. ta rah!
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:47, archived)
# The main character in the film is an arrogant retard who does ludicrous things like that duct business
that are supposed to be sneaky and clever but don't actually work or match up to reality, and then he dies, the end. It's hard to care about him, or by extension, the film.

Come to think of it, O Brother Where Art Thou had exactly the same problem (with the dislikable hero, I mean, another arrogant man with wrong ideas who does stupid things and is supposed to be somehow admirable) and after watching those two films one after the other I don't like the Coen brothers any more.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:54, archived)
# The Happening
is the worst movie I have seen for many years, whereas No Country For Old Men is pretty good.

a M Night Shameless film since Signs, and probably never will
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:33, archived)
# The Village is worth a punt if you've got an afternoon to kill
it's certainly no worse than signs.

But he's certainly suffering the Guy Ritchie syndrome of starting at his best and then declining into farce.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:36, archived)
# I thought Signs was dreadful though
so my enjoyment of The Village will probably be nil

Agree with the Ritchie comparison though (though I prefer Snatch to Lock Stock)
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:40, archived)
# The Village is ok if you don't twig the ending about 20 minutes into the film
nice colours and that
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:44, archived)
# I liked the Village quite a bit
where as Signs made me feel angry that some people still get paid to produce this crap, and it sells regardless of being a shitty farce.

But I appear to be in a minority admittedly.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2008, 11:41, archived)
# I watched it to the end
Why?

Its utterly poo. Pointless poo.

# I have a big shelf that has gradually filled with dvds to watch
then started another level, then filled at the front and is now most of the way across the fourth row. It's a lot of dvds.

We don't really watch tv though, so it works for us

we've got a lot of Ukrainian cinema to get through - although we're usually too knackered to have the mental capacity for subtitles

# We've got too many dvds (over 500 at last count, although God knows now, I'm a bit addicted)
and still not enough choice. At some point I WILL get round to watching all of them....

they've already had cash off me for Casino Roayle 3 disk set (third time I've bought that now, bastards) and Fry and Laurie box set.

And that's a QUIET week for me.

It doesn't help having Fopp and HMV round the corner from work either
