Lately, I've worked my arse off trying to create a new search app.

I had the idea "what if you could find out what the internet thinks of a certain person/thing/whatever?" The technical concept was thought up in a minute, so the next day, I built it. Took a good 2 days of programming (and learning search API's and JSON queries).
This thing searches using 3 major searchengines (google, yahoo and microsoft's new baby, Bing). On top of it, it also uses Twitter for a random - but related - tweet.
If you enter a search, it will try to produce 3 set of results from each search-engine:
- positive associations with the searchterm (e.g. "I like", etc.)
- negative associations with the searchterm (e.g. "I hate", etc.)
- ambivalent associations with the searchterm (e.g. "I don't care about", etc.)
It will then count - and here's the trick - the total number of returned results and add them (per type) together. Then it will display the results in a graph.
This way, you can see what the internet thinks!
Examples:
Jeremy Clarkson: 85,9% negative, 14% positive, 0,1% ambivalent :)
b3ta: 96,5% positive, 3,5% negative and 0% ambivalent
Note that the results vary greatly per hour and - this is an even bigger difference - per search-engine used.
I hope you all have some good fun with this, as I did :) I am still working on it (tuning the algorythm), so expect it to improve!
PS: Note how Bing seems to produce enormous amounts of results (at least 100x more than google on some searches).. what is microsoft up to?

and, more strangely, when I tried 'the financial crisis' on google yesterday, people where mostly ambivalent (45% versus 25/30 pos/negative), but today, all that has magically changed.

finger on the pulse of the internets. Shockingly "gang rape" is also very popular.
It does make you realise just how dodgy the internet really is.

Sounds about right!
