I know were a week out of the riots but I just finished editing my experiences of the riots into this documentary which features Toxteth, Salford & MCR City Centre.
The local newspaper is running the link this week but the guy writing the article hasnt seen it, good week ahead of me.
Approach with an open mind, Let me know what you think, reshare if you like it. Thank you b3tans

44 seconds in, err, the map, are you wanting to be taken seriously or not?
2 minutes in, too much driving, repetetive dull music and oh I've given up.
Sorry, not got an hour to spend on what admittedly could hold the answer to everything, but based on the first 2 minutes will be unrewarding.
I suggest a brief montage of the next 50 minutes at the start so people are hooked or know it's not for them.

Helvetica for the weak of thinking, for the easily lead, for the 'trending media types'
anyone whp suggest using helvetica this days should be treated with suspicion, the suspicion being that a:they know fuck all b:they have wet dreams about Steve Jobs.
Not that I hate trending media types, but if you hanker after living in Hoxton square, you need to be fed to pigs.

I use it a lot for work I do for Braun. It's part of their corporate i.d so no choice
It is becoming the new Times Roman though....
Like Times Roman it's a good type and does it's job well but it's just all over the shop.

It's a good clear print font.
..thats the thing everyone forgets, it is NOT designed to work as a pixelated web font.

I think
you've judged a book by its cover. The hand drawn maps are to give it an original feel. The brief montage was posted a few days ago, guess you missed that one.
2 minutes into your review and ive disregarded it on the basis that if you dont give something a chance then im not going to give you a chance. Which is a shame cuz i like your work HappyToast.
Edit: Just a bit peeved at my first response being about a poor choice of font thats all, skip thru to the 24minute mark for a good battle scene

he makes very reasonable points though
you're expecting people to give it a chance, yet he's just quite sensibly explained why people won't actually bother - esp for an hour. I did 10 mins, good effort - but those titles....

HappyToast is only trying to be helpful, and he does raise some valid points.. the first 2 minutes aren't engaging enough to justify spending the next 50 minutes watching the rest. I'm sure you've put a lot of effort into it, but 50 mins is a long time to invest, especially on the internet where most people switch off after 10 seconds..

I think HappyToasts' comments do reflect
the average internet user who will
1) Judge a book by its cover - right or wrong, a nice font might reduce the chance of it being clicked off before people give it a chance.
2) Want instant rewards. Most usability research suggests people skim read the internet. People need to know that it's worth their time before investing their time. A few exciting clips up-front are likely to encourage people to keep watching.
That said, good work getting it made, though I would question the wisdom of more people unnecessarily going onto the streets at the time.
edit: Having watched it now, I'd say that it could do being a bit more Jon Ronson and a bit less Nathan Barley. It seems a bit too "LOL riot" in places, and zooming in on someone lying apparently injured in the street seemed quite cold. Mocking the police's response for asking you to go home, rather than questioning what you are doing there seemed to highlight the lack of objective awareness that a documentary really needs. That said, it was pretty watchable, even if for morbid curiosity reasons.

as you're doing a great job of backing me up about, you get very sensitive on here - so I find it a little strange you'd offhandedly dismiss someone's work in such a way.
Regardless of what you think, this person has spent more than five minutes on the project and it's his own work... So I'd expect - from you at least - a more constructive criticism

you started by saying I cried drunkenly in to my keyboard when someone criticizes my work, as evidence you then posted a link to me saying "I'm too pissed to care" about the file size of someone's image that you had commented on that you had remembered from 5 years ago.

Yes, I said I was drunk, you're spot on there.
But if you mean the one reply after you call me a cunt was where I'm being sensitive, that was because I'd had a load of hate gaz mail at that time so was questioning if you meant it, nothing more, nothing less.
These are simple, calm questions, no sensitive weirdness.
Can you not see how strange it is though that you have brought up such an event like it was of major importance?
I tell you one thing I am guilty of though, and that's enjoying a nice long conversation and getting to the bottom of things ;)

Fair play to you both for getting out there...
I'd be a bit worried about getting boshed over the head for my camera on Salford Precinct in that kind of climate. It's mad enough round there on a quiet night. I filmed a vox pops near the market once and had to do a runner - that was on a Friday afternoon (pesky C2DE's!)
The doc... Think it needed a bit more structure and possibly a proper VO rather than a running commentary, enjoyed it nonetheless.
Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Well I skipped about a lot n caught about 20 minutes of the main action between doin other stuff, but I found it interesting, might have a longer look later...
you're obviously not professionals and Panorama ain't gonna be worried for their jobs but you've had a crack at it, good to see someone stick their neck out n go have an independent look at what was really goin on out there on the night for our perusal, more than I woulda done mate, so cheers!

Harsh I know.
If you're going to do anything long, especially on Youtube, then you have to grab the attention of the viewer in the first 30 seconds. You didn't manage that. Plus, your opening dialogue was scratchy as fuck. It's not a shot to camera or live video so there's no excuse for muddy sound.
I might watch it all when I have some time but, on first impressions, it needs some work.

trying to keep the mud and grit for later on. Does need a bit of jazzing up in the first cupla minutes I see that now.
Still working on my production skills, just starting out I am, just starting out.
