Title:
Boris Johnson redrawing political rulebook to 'stay in power for a decade'

Which, as far as I can read without subscribing, doesn't give a source. Fingers crossed it's not genuine.

This is not the USA. A party will stay in power as long as they get the votes. The leader of that party is usually then the PM.

I can't see down beyond "is expected to be" and "is likely to be" which on their own are nothing but hollow clickbait. And as ^she said, no sources. Is the full piece nothing but speculation?

None of this is news, or at least new to anyone who takes even the vaguest interest in British politics.
The basic facts, truths and reality are indisputable.
Metropolitan urban constituencies are smaller in terms of numbers of people eligible to vote than small town and rural constituencies. This is a fucking fact.
This means that under FPTP you need less votes to win a metropolitan urban seat than you do to win a small town or rural seat. Fucking fact.
For ages the Tories have been murmuring about reorganising constituencies so that they have a much more similar number of eligible voters. This would make a vote of more equal value wherever it is cast.
This is, of course, a terrible assault on democracy.

We ran parliament without it for centuries, while it has existed for less than a decade, and the only difference it has made in that time has been in contributing to the constitutional deadlock of Brexit.
All parties love to gerrymander the boundaries, so that's nothing new.
Basically, the sky isn't falling in (or at least, if the sky is falling in, this is just a sideshow).

It was put in place initially to help prop up Cameron's coalition government. I'd have thought given that and that all it seems to have done is create the absurd situation where a dead government was forced to limp on for months, most people would be glad to see the back of it.
(, Sun 15 Dec 2019, 14:28, Reply)
His fear was that, if things went well for the Tories, an election could be called at any time, and the Limp Dems would be kicked out of the coalition as they would no longer be needed to prop up a Tory minority government as the Tories would have a majority on their own.

The exception is the Scots of course. How they think they will be able to 'rejoin' the EU if/when the rest of mainland Britain has left is beyond my ken. The EU now requires any new joiners to adopt the Euro, this is non-negotiable, but their economy, even including their oil, is basket case. The open border, which has never been a real border since Hadrian, will be even more problematic than the Irish border. But an aggrieved sense of nationalism is one hell of a drug.

This is extraordinary. He cuts, dyes, sands, glues, sands, glues, shapes and sands thousands of lolly sticks into a guitar, using each stick as a pixel, forming a Mario scene. Worth watching until the end, even if you have no interest in Mario or guitars but appreciate great craftsmanship.

It's not easy to spend time catching up on the Bible given the demands of modern life. I'm guessing this could be downloaded and used as a soothing audiobook. Skip to just before 1m.

He'd obviously thought it out and it nearly worked, and I so wanted it to.

He can now safely ignore the south and the Breximentals and do what he wants - ie get elected *again*.
If you were him, wouldn't you just chuck money at the cough Red Wall?
Corbyn may really have destroyed Labour as we know it.
Jesus Christ, it wasn't like it was ex-miners getting bombed in Iraq - when are people going to recognise that political purity is not a goal.

All Boris did was sell a very simple message to a lot of very simple people. Taking advantage of ignorant, fearful and vulnerable people is called exploitation - It's a well known Tory trait. He's got what he wanted - a Wikipedia entry, that's all Boris is interested in. Re-election will be the last thing he wants. His next step will be a seat in the Lords and a bunch of high paying non-executive board appointments.

My most excellent friend has had her hearing ravaged by tumours. For a while now she's been completely deaf in one ear and down to 10% hearing in the other.
She's had an absolute shite year spending much of it in hospital with complications from her condition but she finally has the cochlear implant she was waiting for on our wonderful NHS.
It's greatly improved her life, but funds are tight and neither she nor the NHS can fund the accessories she needs to make it work better and live a more normal life and overcome the workplace anxieties dodgy hearing causes.
Would mean the world to her, and me, if you could chuck a fiver in the pot and help her have the Christmas she deserves. One where she can hear the Queen on the telly and swear at her accordingly.
Fank yoo

To have any kind of sense of humour after what she's been through is amazing - best wishes for a successful campaign.
*edit* I meant "quite" in the sense of very, not slightly! Bloody English language - I always was shite at it!

She amazes me how she's managed to keep it all together through all this. She's had a pretty tough life and really deserves a bit of a leg up. She's a proper trooper!
