MASSIVE DRUGS
Should alcohol and fags be illegal as the harm they do is as bad or worse than many imprisonable drugges? Or are they so entrenched in our culture that society would break down, and widespread illegal bootlegging/drinking dens simply spring up everywhere?
Or should they all be legal to smash the links with crime and raise valuable tax revenue? OR does that send the wrong message to the (let's face it) generally fucking retarded public, who would simply binge themselves to death?

and then, hilariously, the NHS will fall over.
Honestly, I don't want drugs legalised because I don't approve of them. That is the real answer for everybody that doesn't want them legalised, regardless of how they try to dress it up. All the logical arguments are in the pro camp. Aside from a few "we don't know what the long term effects are" arguments, but since when has that ever stopped us doing anything?

Nope. I don't know anybody with a drug *problem*, as such. I don't particularly enjoy being around people who are on drugs in much the same way as most sober people don't enjoy being around drunk people.
I am not even attempting to form a cogent argument here, because there isn't one. Whilst most people are like me and don't approve of drug use, the law won't change. Sorry.

Said it before, but will say it again:
Make it all legal, but make people as aware as possible in advance of the risks involved (based on actual scientific research, rather than scare stories) and let people make their own decisions. I'd also tax things in proportion to the amount of added burden they are expected to place on the NHS and earmark that tax for such treatment.
So, yeah, treat people like adults really.

Then remove their right to vote and classify them as not adults, but if you have a system that deems everyone over 18 and not actually mentally disabled as a rational, voting, adult (and whether you should is a whole other argument) then you should treat them as such. These twats decide (in theory, another debate here) bigger thing than what they can drink/smoke/inject/shove up their noses.

This is the big debate
Personally I'd make everyone pass a citizenship/intelligence test before they can vote of breed, but if we are talking within the current legal framework, it's age based.
I'm not going to get in to the wider political debate because it's almost endless, I'm just saying that a rational adult (however you define that) should be given all the relevant info and be allowed to make their own decisions. If you can vote on who runs the country, you should be allowed any substances you like, as long as sufficient measures are taken to avoid harm to others.

If I am honest
part of the appeal of drugs to me when I was a teenager was very much the counter-cultural aspect of them, obsessed as I was with the late 60s. I think if you got them from Boots in gay packaging, some of the allure would go out of them and usage would, in time, reduce - heavy users being pitied rather than 'respected' for being 'hardcore'.
But where would that leave me, eh readers? My problem is that my recreational activities have pretty much defined me since I was about 14 - take away my hobbies and I'd just be a very bored old cunt indeed.

Short answer, the policy of criminalising drugs has now been run for many decades and has not solved the problem in any way
therefore teh only logical response is to takle the problem from another angle, legalisation or part legalisation could certainly be part of this.
