That seems to be that, for that thread.
Minimum alcohol pricing.

There was a woman from the GMC on R4 this morning claiming that the introduction of the above would a) help the families of problem drinkers and b) help society as a whole by reducing the social problems of pissed up people in the street.

I call bollocks on both:
a) Surely if you have an ADDICTION TO ALCOHOL a small price increase is not exactly going to make you give up. Similarly if ten-bags of smack went up to eleven quid people across the nation would hardly be packing it in complaining that it cost too much FFS
b) the real social problems associated with drink prices would seem to me that drinking in pubs is so prohibitively expensive that people either stay in or pre-load before going out to save cash. Both of these issues would be better tackled by making pub drinking cheaper - it's supervised for one thing. The very fabric of our great nation is being rent asunder by punitive taxation. HEAR HEAR etc

IMO a combination of things is killing pubs
Culture change - back in the day a pub was where the working man went after work for a drink with his mates. My grandmother, for example, would never have been seen dead in a pub. People's working lives are different now, more shift work etc.
Supermarkets selling alcohol- should be stopped. Pubs and off licences only.
Greedy pubcos forcing landlords to sell more beer than is in the barrel, charging extortionate rents, etc.
SOFT DRINK prices - how the shuddering fuck does a dutyless pint of Coke made from tap water and concentrate cost nearly as much as a pint of beer? Way to encourage not drinking and driving, too.
Smoking ban - to some extent.

I love pubs, and beer, and it's sad to see some go.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 9:48, Reply)
Your grandmother wouldn't be seen dead in a pub because she used to strip in them

This is exactly why our local shut
full of scumbags and druggies, but unfortunately they were the only people with the spare time, money and inclination to spend a lot of time in there.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 9:53, Reply)
Isn't the problem that 'scumbags and druggies' don't have the money to spend there.
If the landlord had kicked out all the scrotes and done something to make his pub more appealing to nicer people with money, it might not have closed.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 9:55, Reply)
Indeed.
They did try a bit (good food deals etc) but the place really needs a full refurb, which they didn't have the cash for.

Or, about exactly what it costs unless its on offer.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:12, Reply)
I'm a bit scared of questioning your massive scientific brain, but I worked it out as:
Stella = 5%
5x Β£0.45 = Β£2.25
24x Β£2.25 = Β£54

A can of fosters (440mL) is 1.8 units, a can of Stella 2.3

So, for a slab, either 1.8x0.45x24=Β£19.44 or 2.3x0.45x24=Β£24.84.

Shop keepers and publicans should simply look at the person they are serving and dtermine the price
if they are a ruddy nosed tramp, wack up the price, if they are a gel haired townie asking for a round of alcopops, wack up the price, however if it's a nice middle class person having a couple of bottle of wine with their supper then make it nice and cheap.

This is precisely my problem.
I am incapable of restraining my expression or, in fact, the tone of my voice.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:31, Reply)
Me too, old chap. It's one of the reasons my boss hates me.
My contempt for him is writ LARGE on my face whenever I have to talk to the repulsive little turd.

have they not done this in Scotland already?
It's just another way to increase tax revenue and will make no difference to consumption levels. If they really wanted to tackle problem boozing, they'd implement the Scandinavian model.

The pricks.

They can't get it past Europe and it's almost certainly outside of the scottish parliments remit.
And may even be against the act of union, something to do with the free flow of goods between scotland and england.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:29, Reply)
no, the Scots parliament were definitely talking about minimum pricing.
It received Royal Assent last year apparently.

The Scots seem to have a funny idea of what they can and can't do at the moment, though.
Like declaring independence and staying within the EU, for one thing.

It's been through parliament and everything.
My missus' last bill was postponed by six months because they were only allowed on health bill reading per session and minimum pricing was the chosen one.

Yeah,
The Scandinavian model works fucking BRIALLIANTLY in Finland, for instance.

/It is actually an aspect of the Scandinavian model they are trying to implement, namely making booze more expensive than gold. But the socioeconomic reasons for lower alcohol abuse in Sweden and Norway are way more complicated than only being able to buy booze between midday and 3pm on weekdays.

They're not a bunch of socially conditioned piss-heads
who're only ever a stone's throw from alcohol-influenced violence the way us islanders are.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:38, Reply)
In Iceland they are fucking nuts.
They don't have a violence problem but people routinely freeze to death having passed out in the street going home.

Have you ever been out drinking with Finns or in Finland?
Fucking hell. You'd be amazed.

The biggest problem we have with alcohol in this country is crippling levels of self-loathing and critiscm. We aren't a nation of out-of-control psycopathic pissheads who are all going to die either bleeding out on a street corner or aged 30 of cirrhosis. But because the Daily Mail tells us we are, we believe them.

They are terrifying to go drinking with, especially in Tallinn.
I've had to erase whole days from my mind just so I can sleep at nights. Luckily, drinking with Finns in Tallinn can erase whole months from your mind, so that's OK.

Actually no, do they get fighty?
We're kind of known for being drunk and starting fights in Europe. The English, Scots and Irish, anyway. Not the Welsh. Nobody ever gives a shit about the Welsh. From personal experience though, they're every bit as bad.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:44, Reply)
Because they seldom leave Wales cos they can't afford to.

(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:46, Reply)
Are we really, do you think?
Because we are considered culturally uncouth, I grant you. But a lot of violence is football based, and in that we are fucking amateurs compared to the Dutch, Germans and Eastern Europeans. Hell, we'd struggle to get past the Italians in a dust-up, and most Europeans know that.

There are issues with some of the Spanish and Greek holiday resorts, I know, but that's not entirely brits (the Germans again are textbook) but I wouldn't go as far as to say that's how we are all judged.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:49, Reply)
I knew a guy in the RN. He was docked in Antigua, where the RN and American navy regularly dock.
He said there was a sign on the bar there saying "Attn American service personnel. Please do not try to out-drink or out-fight the British".

I know, anecdotal evidence etc, but it's always stuck in my mind.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:51, Reply)
I think we have the same level of drunk, violent, fighty twats as any other Northern European country
Ours are just a bit more vocal, a bit more stupid and then we have a fuckton more handwringing from our press.

There's plenty of anecdotes and personal experiences but they are all just isolated. I was on a train out of Munich full of Bayern fans that was deliberately stopped at a deserted station so that 1860 fans could storm and kick the absolute fucking shit out of them. That was pretty much the most terrifying thing I've seen. And I've been in Millwall when they've played Leeds. Doesn't mean I think all Germans are psycho.
(, Wed 13 Mar 2013, 10:56, Reply)
And no, not particualarly fighty
but I thought we were talking about alcohol abuse and danger? The Finns just get cunted and start plying Russian Roulette with each other, that kind of thing.
