Predictably my facebook feed is now full of "Blame the owner not the dog!" posts
I am of the opinion that you'd have to be pretty naive not to realise that some breeds really should not be kept as pets.

What do you think?

Alt. Anyone fancy a piss up in Bristol on the 19th April

Certain breeds are obviously more powerful than others
but no dog is inherently an attack risk. Dogs that attack are usually badly trained or have behavioural problems from mistreatment.

Edit: I have no idea whether this is based off a news story or not and I hate dogs.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:15, Reply)
Animals that require training probably shouldn't be kept as pets

The fact that they often bite people should come as no shock at all
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:30, Reply)
I don't really see why that's relevant.
Dogs in general have evolved to be really fucking good at hunting and killing in packs and that's not seen as any kind of bar to ownership. What the breed was bred for has nothing to do with temprament.

Or to put it another way, bull terriers are no more likely to fight things than old english sheepdogs are. Bull terriers are simply better at it when they do.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:51, Reply)
staffies used to be known as pram guards as they were so good with babies
we ruined them* with interbreeding and aggressive training.

Critics of this legal saga say it would never have been necessary if Abu Qatada had been charged with a crime and put on trial.

it's not the british justice system, it's the way it's applied.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:46, Reply)
Unfortunatly this case has never had anything to do with the British legal system
And has had everything to do with pandering to the gutter press and trying to flex muscles and look like they are going to deport a suspect character.
The Home Office fucked it all up from the very beginning.

(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 14:07, Reply)
which breeds tho?
staffys are the friendliest dogs around, the only ones where the official dog breeders description includes the term "child friendly" yet because of their popularity with the sorts of people who like to train dogs to fight each other, they got a bad reputation. claiming it is naive to realise some breeds should not be kept as pets is naive in itself
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:29, Reply)
Staffies are really bad with other dogs.
But fine with people.
Well I don't like them because they drool and jump on you. but they don't bite or scratch.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:30, Reply)
no, no they are not. staffies are possibly the friendliest breed when it comes to meeting other dogs.
i'm starting to wonder if the people with the loudest opinions here actually have no clue what they are talking about, which must be a first, usually the loudest opinions are the most well informed

yeh actually giving a dog a gun is, in my experience, a very bad idea and certain breeds are more dangerous once they have a gun,
some dogs like a great dane (great for a reason) will immediately remove the ammo from the gun and keep it held in its pouch, wheras other dogs will immediately attempt to shoot a policeman

8 out of 10 owners recommend it

(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:36, Reply)
why? those are the dogs that bad owners choose to train to be dangerous. it's not exactly difficult maths that.

Can't be bothered to go through them all in detail
but the word family appears 111 times on the wiki page for list of fatal dog attacks.THats out of 246 fatalities so I would say its pretty common that the family pet kills
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:43, Reply)
so because they were in a family they must be well trained?
not sure i follow.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:44, Reply)
wait, i've seen the list, its for the usa,
first family dog killer was a labrador, this screws everything up, still failing to see the bit that says it was well trained, where is that bit? cheers

Why does it matter if it was well trained.
All breeds can be badly trained

100% of staffie owners will defend them no matter what
so no point debating with you, even that dumb bitch whose staffie killed her own kid defended the dog.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:50, Reply)
i wasn't talking about my dog though,
i didn't realise i was even defending her, is she part of this discussion?
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:52, Reply)
also she's only partially staffy, seeing as you seem to want to talk about her.
i've got pics if you like too!
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:53, Reply)
because that's the exact point we were discussing wasnt it?
that it's the badness of the owner rather than the breed? i'm so confused.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:46, Reply)
Yes and I am saying that even well trained dogs can attack
so the breeds most likely to kill if they did snap probably shouldn't be kept as pets. Ie. the big strong ones
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:48, Reply)
i see what you mean
but also there is no evidence there that any of those dogs were not badly trained rather than well trained and just snapping

edit: though i should point out, if there were evidence of that then of course i would completely agree. i don't disagree even, i just havent seen any evidence other than what people reckon, so far here
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:49, Reply)
A large number of the deaths are children
So really the size of the dog is irrelevant.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:57, Reply)
oh, second one was a dog the family was keeping for a family friend, so not a family dog after all.
am i looking at the same info as you here?
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:46, Reply)
Probably
but there is no evidence that the majority of the dogs in the list were badly trained.
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:47, Reply)
there's no evidence to say that they werent either
so i have no idea why you thought the list proved anything
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:48, Reply)
The list proves some breeds kill a lot more than others

(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:49, Reply)
yeh i don't think anybody thought otherwise

(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:49, Reply)
And those breeds are the ones that are also statisically more kept by bad owners who don't train and encourage aggression in their dogs
So?
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:58, Reply)
Also, Rotties/Pit Bulls are going to be skewed examples
as they are frequently kept as untrained guard dogs, so very much more likely to be in a situation where they attack
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 14:01, Reply)
god damn, the only data i can find on fatal dog attacks in europe only goes up to 2010,
when there were 15 in all of europe and it doesn't say how many of them were a well trained family pet :( i am terrible at research
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:43, Reply)
I found a stat that says
Over 75% of dog bites are from the pet of family or friends. Yes I know stats can prove everything
(, Wed 27 Mar 2013, 13:45, Reply)
I bet the majority of people who get bitten
are the sort who can't recognise the warning signs of a dog getting stressed.

They're more or less the same as kids
If you train them right, you can take them anywhere. If not, they're a pain in the arse.
And occasionally you get ones that are never going to behave well no matter what you do. These dogs can be classified as 'little cunts'.

Alt: no offence, but not if it's just you. It'll cost me a fortune to get home on a Friday night, and it'd need to be a decent bash to be worth it. Apart from that, yeah, I'd love to.

Get some others along, ad I'll be there.
Or pay for a taxi home.
I'll even bring a book to wave at you, if you like.

I think every breed of dog can be trained, but some take more training than others
The fact that these dogs were able to grow into what they were lays the blame at the owners feet.

Alt: No thanks

AltAlt: Watched a few films over the weekend.
Good - Harry Brown, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, Kick Ass
OK - Princess Bride
Pretty shit - Ghost Rider
