we are
simulating a disaster recovery scenario at work to see what happens when a computer room crashes.
then we are doing it again.
hardcore.
Still, free food and time and a half overtime can't complain toooooo much!

Sadly not! Wouldn't that be nice...
No, all I have is my flatmate, who's just gone to the gym (mental) and the neurotic cat, out being a tart in the garden. Such is life.

Uni work does seem pretty dire until faced with the choice of that or a house of poo.
Halfy - 6.30am? Even mentaller then. That said, I'm going tomorrow, though probably only for a swim.

Scotland game is on at 3 though so hopefully find that on the internet somewhere and get some beers in the shop.

Hi all
Only just woke up about 10 mins ago, it's my weekend off but I whored myself out for some overtime yesterday and am doing so again tomorrow so it's good but tiring. How're y'all?
Younger brother who works for a skip hire company texted me this morning to let me know he's found me a dehumidifier for my conservatory!

Wait until lunch, then go to the gym, (seeing all those fat people made me paranoid!), then come home and watch the football.
Personally, I don't believe in all this Scotland/England hatred. I hope Scotland win their game as I much as I hope England win their game.

I have just come out of university and have plenty of debt already! I want to wait until I have some guaranteed income before I think about getting a credit card.
And I want to move to London as there is more of a market for jobs involving languages and Mr VP lives there and we were planning on moving in together.

Afternoon all
I wish I could lie in bed all morning. The main problem is that I've been getting up at 5.30 during the weekdays for the last 4 years, so when I have a 'lie in' on a weekend, I tend to sleep in until about 7.30-8.00, then wake up feeling very awake.
My head is still a bit fuzzy though. Looking at the bottle of Glenmorangie I was attacking last night though, there's a fair bit less than there was yesterday :)
It's a nice day, so I might go and treat the car to its annual wash. The windows are about the same colour as the bodywork at the moment.

Good luck with your room, and I hope your approach to tidying is better than mine.
I start off by carefully tidying everything, sorting it and putting everything where it belongs. Then after about half an hour I just get impatient and throw everything else into the bottom of a cupboard :)
What sort of job are you going for in Cardiff?

Unfortunately that seems to be about the way I do things. One section of my room will be nice and tidy and then by the time I move around I can't be bothered and just move stuff around.
The job in Cardiff (which will actually be based in a village outside of Bath) is for a PA role for some important man. And I'm hoping to get an interview to do the paperwork for a wedding dress shop, which would be good.

For the PA role, you might want to try wearing the catsuit. Important people seem to like that sort of thing.
If you got the wedding dress shop job though, you'd have access to plenty of ammunition to drop hints to Mr VP :)

He's terrified I'll get the wedding dress job and will badger him to marry me!
Hell no, we will do that at some point I think, we've decided but I want a lot more money and stability first!
And of course he has to woo my socks off first. I'm a tough lady to please. I have done my fair share of woo-ing him.

Just don't let him leave it too long.
I made the mistake of waiting for money, stability etc., and that's one of the reasons that ex-Mrs Rubberduck and I are no longer together. By the time I popped the question, it was probably about 3 years later than she would have wanted.

I'm debating whether to accept an offer on my house. it'll mean we're in negative equity to the tune of £20K, but it's the only offer we've had in a year. I'm thinking we just take it. What do you think?

I have just changed my bedsheets though, that's quite a bit of effort. And this afternoon I am going to make some apple puffs (fnar fnar) and then tonight I'm having curry with my dad. He's buying me a takeaway as a thank you for cooking all week for him and mum.

And of course, I shall be removing any talc marks left on my catsuit.

You're right, it isn't great, but that's not what I said. I said it's better than no points, which, I'm sure you'll agree, is considerably worse. :O)
As for the Sassenachs, I have a little faith in them. I reckon they'll win, but make a meal of it. Let's remind ourselves that Kazakhstan is placed one place above Singapore and one place below Hong Kong. That's the level we're dealing with here, people.

And there is but it's just getting the damn thing there. I did say to the people on the phone I know it's worth money if weighed in and as it's from '78 it has a higher metal content than modern cars. They are coming to look at it tomorrow. I'm not going to accept less than 60 now to be vindictive.

Afternoon all....
@ TGB - they're trying to con you (I take it you're of the female persuasion?) With the price of metal at the moment you can weigh anything in and get money for it.
I'm playing bingo on the internet as I found a site that gives you £15 free credit without depositing any money first. Currently at £29.36 (woo) but it won't let me withdraw it until I deposit money of which I have none, bastards!

But sadly for them I can give as good as I can get!
I think they realised that when the said "it will be free" and I said "I will call someone else then" as they immediately upped the ante to "we will come look at it tomorrow"
They will probably try and say it's worth nothing as it doesn't have an engine even though it has three gearboxes in the boot!

I sold my old car (*sobs*) to one of the lads at Warton Stock Car Club. He's going to turn it into a banger and smash it to pieces.
I was forced to sell it as it broke expensively and I couldn't afford to fix it. I couldn't bring myself to scrap it. And I love going to the track to watch the races. Always wanted a banger but could never afford to do it myself. So my dear old Carleton will have a proper send off, and I shall watch :)
EDIT: that'll teach me not to read the rest of the thread. Apparently I am not the first to have had that idea! Soz!

Oh
and also, I rang a scrappers first and he offered me £60 to take it off my hands. Then I posted on the WSCC forum, and had three replies within the day. The scrappy chappy rang back and I told him, and he offered me £100 straightaway.
I think I could have bargained considerably more if I was so inclined. The price of metal has indeed gone right up.
EDIT: (again - one of these days I will say everything in one go), I sold it for £100 to the banger lad, and prolly could have got more out of him too. There's always the chance that he was going to scrap it and make a profit... but he said he'll give me a shout when he races it so I can watch... I do hope he does.

Another gambling story...
One day, I was playing online poker. I ended up on a high stakes poker table. The last hand I played on that table involved me putting everything on the table. £250! I won the hand and pocketed £1000 from that hand, but when I sat and thought about how wrong it could have gone, it terrified me.
I, then, closed my account and uninstalled the software. I've never gambled since. It scared me how far I'd gone from a small stakes to a £250 hand! I still play small games with friends, but that's more of a social thing with a strict £5 limit per game (not hand).
Gambling is a dangerous game.

It certainly is
My mum sells the lottery in her shop and the amount of money people spend compared to what they win is shocking...
The only reason I'll put any of my own money into this is to be able to withdraw my winnings though. They give you £15 free with no deposit but then don't let you take your winnings out until you deposit at least a fiver, so far I'm about £20 up which isn't bad for free!

Top Gear makes me sad sometimes when they trash BL cars as there aren't many about any more :(

I quite like the old wedges too, but there's still a fair few of them around if you know where to look. The Princess I got upset about being banger raced was one of these. The shell was solid, and there were only about 6,000 made in the first place :(
Ancrenne - You're welcome to banger race an L-plate Cavalier. I'd put it in the same bracket as my Granada - i.e. 80s/90s stuff that there's still plenty of good examples of. There will come a day though when they too are rare...

There's a TV show on called "Sunshine" with Steve Coogan about gambling. It's pretty sad.
I heard of a guy at a golf club who used to spend the best part of £1500 A WEEK on those £250 fruit machines. He used to pump £500 into these machines and not win a sausage. Then when the bar closed. The bar manager used to win all the money. So when the guy came back the next morning, he lost more money and the bar manager did it again.
Wash, rinse, repeat!
And don't think that because this guy was a member of a golf club, he had money to throw about. He was a double glazing salesman and didn't earn that much (it was all for show).
£1500 a week for goodness sake!

That's true Al but
it's more realising you have a problem. There was a time when I used to drink at least 5 pints a day. I didn't think I had a problem until someone mentioned casually that drinking that much by myself every day may be seen as somewhat dependable.

I *want* a Defender as my second car.
A 90-inch 50th Anniversary 4.0 V8 is top of my wish list, but they're as rare as rocking horse shit :(

A pleasure - It's one of the best films ever made. My favourite bit is when Withnail is warned of the possibility of a rat in the kitchen which spawns the best quote known to man
"Then the fucker shall rue the day!"

In the interest of balance....
.....I ought to point out that gambling helped me through university. I only had a meagre grant and little time for a job (course was very demanding). So I gambled my way through university. Fruit machines, poker, horses etc. I consider myself EXTREMELY lucky that I didn't have a bad loss during those 3 years, but I did accept that it was very dangerous what I did.
Then, I had my poker incident and never gambled again.

Series II FTW
The V8s are amazing for off road but very very thirsty... problem is all the old diesels pre Td5 are rubbish. Isuzu 3.0TDI from a Trooper is a good transplant.
I've been offered a 1992 Merc 300E straight six diesel, rather sluggish but has air con, cruise, electric everything including seats, full leather and will do 45mpg even with the auto box. Also a good candidate for running on veg oil.
£900!

@Sam
I'm not too bothered about the V8 thirst. I'm used to that - my daily driver is a 4.2 supercharged V8 :)
The TD5 is an utterly mental engine, and very, very tuneable. It's essentially a 5-cylinder version of the highly underrated Rover L-series. It just hasn't got the V8 soundtrack though :(
EDIT: That Merc. It's a W124 300D. As in, as rare as a Defender 50th. Buy it. NOW.

Ooh
What's your daily driver then?
Yep, it's a W124, pre 1993 when they started putting the 3.2 in them but still labelling them as 300s.
They're not actually THAT rare, most of them are post 93 admittedly but the W124 is one of the best Mercs ever, before they started going seriously downhill. You can get W210 for not a lot but they're fugly with the round headlights.
I can't understand the craze for new cars, my mate just spent £2k on a Y reg Renault Clio, hasn't even got leccy windows let alone the rest of the gadgets!
(My dad has a W202 250D and a R107 300SL, we like the old Benzes here)

I have to admit.....
....the S-Type is a great car (i.e handling, ride quality etc), but the front grille spoils it for me!
The 4.2l supercharged engine is a fine engine! Certainly one of the best engines in the world I'd say. Up there with the Ford GT (lifted from an F-series truck) and the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive (A piece of engineering brilliance).
*Edit* Sam, I DO understand the craze for new cars, provided you box clever.
Find a good third party broker and you can pick up some right bargains!
e.g. Jaguar X-Type diesel sovereign rrp £31K. Broker's price: £25K.

You posted while I was writing mine...
My old boss had one of those sporty ones, rather nice.
Although he did get rid of it for a Continental GT with lambs wool carpeting, champagne glass holders, built in butler etc etc
It's the size and weight of a house, as luxurious as a 6* hotel and still probably the fastest motor I've ever been in!

Yeah I agree, I don't have nearly that much to spend though! I meant people who buy 2 year old Fiestas etc when they could get something much more interesting/bigger if they went 10-15 years older.
(p.s. X type is a very bad example, you do realise it's a Mondeo with a 100% surcharge for the Jag badge on it?)

I am aware of the X-Type/Mondeo relationship. in fact, I own an X-type and I love it!
The salient piece of information which people always forget is that although the powertrain is lifted from a Mondeo, Jaguar worked on it to make it better. The ride quality is superb and handling is brilliant!
Genetically speaking, humans are 96% the same as a chimpanzee, but it's that 4% which makes the difference. :O)

Had an S3 a couple of years ago in times of better funds but had to ditch it after 6 months (9 points later lol)
Had plenty of Audis and VWs so I'm feeling the need to move up to a Merc now!

Well we went to the Marina (not that kind of Marina GB)
where the new Uni has opened to have a look at that and the jellyfish.
Then we went into town, got some food and sat in the park having a picnic.

Sounds like a rather pleasant day! What type of jellyfish was it? Box? Portuguese Man O'war?
Jellyfish are interesting. Why are they so poisonous? They don't need to be that dangerous, they only eat fish and suchlike.
@Sam
My problem with German cars is that although the build quality is good and they handle quite well, the reliability is appalling. Considering they cost about 25% more than a similar Japanese marque, I think that's unacceptable.

Just the ones that live in the waters of the marina, your common or garden jellyfish.

They're definitely getting worse, I agree
Which is why I wouldn't touch a new Merc, Audi etc with a barge pole.
FWIW I've had an S3, Golf mk4, Passat mk5, A4 mk1, A6 mk1 & mk2 (and these are just the cars that spring to mind!) over the last few years and never had a major problem with any of them.
I just like the squareness of the dash, good design and general 'German-ness' of them more than any other cars. Plus the VWAG 1.9 & 2.5TDI are SUCH good engines, especially on a 6 speed box!
PS - I change cars a lot cos I get bored of them and fancy something new.

I'll stick with Jags for the time being. They're extremely reliable.
