A lot of people do it purely for attention, agreed.
In my own case it was for rather different reasons, and it's something which I don't really regret - it was kind of a way of punishing myself for mistakes or errors in judgement which resulted in harm either physically or mentally to others as a direct result of my actions. Agreed, though, people who do it for attention are totally laughable...

In my humble and no doubt niave opinion
it doesnt seem to any real benefit to those you harmed, so basically it's just a selfish action to appease yourself.

A result of self hate
Self hate and loathing led to my self harming. I did it to find a way to feel something other than numb. The joys of psychotherapy and rebirth followed and no more self harm ever since. Some times it is serious.

The rain effect is a custom brush. I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out how to save changes to custom brushes though. I've not long installed CS3 and there are some odd quirks with it.
