Would have been nice to see the Welfare bill included in all that blank space though, and a lot of the other things they seem to think are worth cutting right now.
Then again, all of that could fit nicely, a few times over, into the money that's going to be given to the energy companies so that someone along the chain can make an obscene profit.

this panic has diverted almost all scrutiny away from his Great British
A particularly impressive feat considering that unemployment currently sits at 3.6% and isn't likely to grow by much considering the current economic situation. I suppose we'll just have to ship in the workforce from somewhere else.
To be fair (besides getting hold of the raw materials), the solar bit will be easy enough. In order to be eligible for Great British Energy, the Government can just mandate that every domestic rooftop in the country is retrofitted with a PV array which feeds directly into Starmer's network. Socialist energy production for the greater good!
I mean, Starmer's plans are nice in principle and all, but at least the Tories plans might work out. Starmer's are just bonkers.
The biggest problem is that Truss is a sexy idiot. But she's essentially a meat puppet (as most PM's are). So let's hope her cabinet are slightly better suited to the job.

CAT suggests we'd need an additional 13,000 offshore turbines and 3,500 onshore turbines. Granted, that's the number required to reach zero carbon. But I'd imagine the numbers required to make the UK largely self-sufficient in regards to domestic energy production won't be far off that number. At a rate of one turbine per day, we'd be looking at 1,825 turbines built over a 5 year period.

( , Fri 30 Sep 2022, 3:00, Reply)

I'm simply suggesting that Starmer's response is completely impractical. The vast cost of such a project would absolutely eclipse the current government's tax cuts (money we'd still need to borrow), and the likelihood of completing such a project at all - never mind over the space of 5 years - when we neither have the workforce, nor the existing infrastructure to support such a project is practically nil. The road to hell is paved with good intentions
It's somewhat telling how angry people get when you criticise Starmer's plan. I suppose they just don't like to be reminded that we're almost certainly fucked either way.
We should have known that was the case since Brexit, though. I guess people just like burying their heads in the sand.

People simply object to being told what you think about things. Things that you clearly know nothing about. Over and over again, sometimes replying to yourself with different accounts to make it look like you've written something valuable. And who can blame them?
( , Fri 30 Sep 2022, 10:35, Reply)

In 2021, we added 2,645 megawatts of wind turbine capacity. (Statistica)
Best case scenario, an average on-short wind turbine can generate 2.5-3MW of power. ( (WindEurope)
I can't find accurate data for how many turbines we installed, but we can estimate in the last year we installed around 1000 wind turbines in 2021, or 2.73 a day. That was without a massive push by a government to do so. Also, in 2020, 24% of our energy came from wind turbines, and that number has obviously increased since then (ONS).
Also, the Conservatives already committed to building loads more turbines by 2030, and the right-wingers I have spoken to seem to believe that our main infrastructure should never have been privatised, so Starmer's plans aren't totally bonkers.
I do appreciate, though, that we don't have a workforce skilled in these disciplines, and our skill shortages do line up with the kinds of skills required for big engineering (Gov.uk shortage occupations tracker) - but I do also contest why are we wanting to re-invest heavily in short term energy engineering projects like fracking or re-opening coal mines (which too would be government funded), when we can expand our renewables? Surely that would be a better investment?
Maybe the people I speak to are in the minority, but I live in a decidedly blue county, and the few right-leaners who dislike Labour with a passion agree that one of the biggest mistakes we made as a country was to privatise our infrastructure. And nationalising things does tend to stabilise how much things cost, even if they don't work as efficiently.
( , Fri 30 Sep 2022, 10:33, Reply)

I'm also completely in support of publicly owned infrastructure. I also think that absolutely in our best interests to focus on green, renewable energy.
Starmer's ideology is sound. But he's either completely ignorant of the size of the undertaking he's proposing or (more likely) well aware that it's completely unachievable but knows it will be a big vote winner with the Social Media users come GE time.
If he wins the GE (which looks extremely likely at present), then I genuinely wish him all the best. But I don't expect him to follow through on his promises. It'll be interesting to see how Hoppity, Garold and co employ their mental gymnastics to excuse that one. Probably still going to blame the Tories, somehow.
( , Fri 30 Sep 2022, 10:45, Reply)

not paying too much attention to be honest. It's a long way to a GE and I'm gonna assume that they'll have to do some pretty solid costings because Labour won't get the free ride from the DM & Tel that the tories do. There will be fuckloads of scrutiny so I'm just gonna sit back and see how it plays out.

( , Thu 29 Sep 2022, 7:46, Reply)

( , Thu 29 Sep 2022, 7:49, Reply)

Considering the flute's original owner was a huge slave enthusiast, for somebody such as Lizzo who has been so outspoken previously in support of equal rights to hold up the flute and regard it as some kind of valuable relic of American history seems somewhat morally ambiguous.
But it is a fucking crystal flute, though! So I suppose that totally overrides any ethically questionable history surrounding the piece. Plus, I'm sure none of those 'bitches' in the audience are really that concerned about the provenance surrounding the instrument. Or perhaps I've totally misread the crowd and they're actually just screaming at the thought of the flute having the power to raise James Madison's vengeful, slave hungry corpse from the dead.
