Obama, shit or get off the pot
Husni Mubarak has decided to defy Barack Obama and to rally available police and population control forces against the mobs of revolutionaries. Rocks, bricks and mounted agents of the government are attacking the crowds. In his televised announcement of his own withdrawal from public life Mubarak accused the demonstrators of "abuse of freedom of speech," "lawlessness," criminality" etc. and said that these "criminal elements" must be "punished" before elections can be held.
President Obama has engaged the policy and prestige of the United States on the side of the revolutionaries. Such commitment should not be withdrawn else the world will rightly conclude that the bravery and dedication of American troops as demonstrated in Iraq and Afghanistan is once again sadly matched by the fecklessness of American government.
This poses a major dilemma for the Obama Administration because the Zionist friends of the president (both American and Israeli) are giving them conflicting guidance. The neo-con Zionists simultaneously want to see their Jacobin dream of revolution come to fruition and also to see the continuation of the "cold peace" between Israel and Egypt. The Israelis seem to have a clearer vision. They want their allies in Egypt kept in power.
Having gone this far the US has little choice but to remember its own revolutionary tradition, to stand by the men and women in the streets and to tell the Egyptian Army that the time has come to choose its own future and that of Egypt. If the generals; Omar Suleiman, Tantawi and Shafik wish to stand by Mubarak, they will have made a fateful error. pl

One of the most harrowing experiences of my life was driving in the US in snowy conditions.
It wasn't the snow which was shitting me up, but the way the 'merkins seemed to think that through sheer American determination the laws of physics would somehow decide that they would leave them alone.
I have never seen so many crashed/upside-down/burning/sideways cars in my life, coupled with people speeding, hitting intermittent snowdrifts and veering sideways every few seconds. No chains, no nothing, just morons all the way to the mountains and back.
(I live in Switzerland and have seen people tackle snow like that, however the difference is they use chains, snow tyres and common sense.)

Touche - but there would be no driving going on either.
It's the slamming it down the snow and ice covered roads as if it's a dry sunny day which I objected to.
You can see the cars in the video driving in the background, still a bit quick for my tastes, especially considering that there's an upended car in a ditch right beside them.
Anyhow - not saying Swiss drivers are better, just that I've never seen such a display of frightening driving then when I was in the snowey US.

I remember reading about one of the Daily Star's goofs. They claimed that Gabba techno was exclusively nazi music, and named a particular club in London as a hotbed of this racist gabba-based-nastyness. So the club took them to court.
...Where it was pointed out to the judge that the owner of the club was black, the promoter of the gabba night in question was black and a number of the biggest DJ's on the gabba circuit were black (namely HMS and Loftgroover). Cue printed apology.

I think they justify it as the original skinheads in the '70s weren't far right and most of the music and culture was based on Jamaican influence, or some such, I'm not sure how true that is but there you go.

Good read, not at ALL surprised but it's good to see someone standing up to be counted, someone should make a blog page called 'I was lied about by the Tabloids' or something similar so people can tell their side of the story, see if it adds some balance.
I get SO disheartened that every time I go down to see ANY elderly relative and they're reading out passages from their tabloid rag like it's tru-fax and looking at me like I'm an idiot when I say it's probably not true, they get so worked up about it all, I hear phrases like 'You can't do what you like in your own country no more' and 'children can't play in the streets safely' and such and you just KNOW it will be based on complete fabrication, yet here they are fearful eyes stabbing at the paper and voting Tory, or worse, so they can 'sort things out'.

My boss was talking about the start of the cold war today
and the shooting down of the B52 that really kick started the whole thing. Essentially, it boiled down to a journalist exaggerating how many missles the ruskies had and the incoming president believing that. Not quite as crystal clear but sounds interesting. It was on Radio 4, so should be on iplayer. I'll link if I find it.

It's generally misunderstood by people who choose to misunderstand it, and wish to suggest something sinister.
Also - population control does not equal eugenics. One of these is highy desirable, the other is not.
And, there's no evidence of any kind of eugenics going on in Africa, but feel free to continue insinuating there is.

I don't think it's fair
to interpret a single contextually vague quote as an accidental admission of support for eugenics programs.
It looks like there may be reliable evidence that vaccines have been used to sterilize populations (this is awful).
But it's clear from a quick google search that the relationship between vaccines and population control that Gates was talking about is based on theories about the relationship between infant mortality and population growth, specifically the proposal that high infant mortality leads to larger family sizes. There isn't a consensus on whether this holds true or not so you could criticize his reasoning, but it's pretty obviously this that Gates was talking about, and not a secret plan to sterilize people worldwide.

ok
You're right- I had just seen mention of cases where people claimed there were sterilizing agents found in vaccines (especially one in the Philippines in the '90s).
I can't find any actual published research that supports this. I ended up looking through "Patterns of vaccination acceptance" by Strefland (et al), published in Social Science & Medicine 1999.
It lists a bunch of cases where rumors like this were disseminated by groups like the Roman Catholic Church. It says that the rumors were found to be false, but I didn't see any citations.

I don't understand
If it turns out that large family sizes really are a result of poor living conditions, surely improving those living conditions and controlling population growth would help abate the problem of scarce resources. This doesn't have anything to do with sterilization or murder- quite the opposite. So I don't see anything unethical about it.
Do you have some support for an argument that population size isn't causally related to scarcity of resources? That would be the only thing that would convince me that Gates and Turner are saying anything wrong.

You're saying that vaccinating children against potentially fatal diseases is playing god (which I assume means some sort of abuse of medical technology). At this point I'm not sure but think you must be joking- I probably should have caught on sooner.

He was in The Sex Pistols who were a FUCKING IMPORTANT BAND to a lot of people.
Notice how he's singing and not shooting up or stabbing his girlfriend in the video? MASSIVE difference between music and the musician, art and the artist etc.
