Yeah, but it's not always about being funny
His act was about more than just comedy - it had a message. And he was right about pretty much everything. Drugs, War, Religion, Guns etc.

Yeah but
although I appreciate you don't find him funny, millions do. He used his comedy as a vehicle to help get his message across. Had he just been a lecturer then you'd never have heard of him nor his views.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not the hugest fan of his stand up videos - some of it is good, and some of it not so. However the manuscripts are fucking brilliant reading.
I guess I like him in the same way I like Mark Thomas - he's not hysterical (in my opinion there are very very few funny stand ups) but what he is/was doing counts for more than that.
Edit: I've always liked this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np6_b-72H3E

Millions of people found Bernard Manning funny
Popular does not mean funny. I think he was popular because he essentially comes across as a moody teenager
I DON'T CARE IF DRUGS ARE BAD I HATE YOU I WISH I'D NEVER BEEN BORN
I don't know why I have such a problem with him tbh
Also, I love Mark Thomas.

I uite often agree with parts of what he says
its just he's so intolerant and black and white about issues that clearly aren't.
Even when he's talking about things like drugs, where I completely agree with him, I end up thinking "oh just fuck off and stop being so smug".

I just don't think it's anywhere near as important as people think
He doesn't seem to have an agenda or a message per se, more just ranting about how everyone in any sort of authority is a tit and every rule is stupid.
I might be generalising slightly. Slightly.

I adore Bill Hicks.
I was lucky enough to see him when he came over. I had never seen or heard anything like him. I understand if his 'comedy' does not translate too well these days. But at the time, it was a breath of fresh air. Like him or not he certainly helped to pave the way for much of the political satire that we see today.

Comedy's like that, though - one man's poison etc. I saw him on telly quite early on and liked him immediately, followed his career and liked him more and more as time went on. Another dead hero etc etc.
But I can quite see how if you come to his stuff cold - or even worse - on the back of the massive hype and aura there is about him posthumously, you could easily find it disappointing. I agree he isn't the funniest stand-up there's ever been, not the cleverest or most insightful either - but there's something about him that really appeals to me (and a lot of other people). Also, I find most stand-ups utterly tiresome and unfunny, have to treasure the handfull I do find funny and genuine.
I've read that book Love All of the People, and was quite surprised to see how few routines he actually had, and how often jokes and sections of the act were reheated. Could be that he'd run out of material and if he'd lived he'd now be a panelist on Celebrity Pro-Am Indoor Cricket with Anthea Turner on UK GOLD. There is a certain heroism mark-up afforded to those who died young - I bet we've all been guilty of indulging in it at one time or another.
( , Sat 12 Feb 2011, 2:05, Share, Reply)
I did think he was clever and definitely was 'of the moment'
but it's saying something that I laughed at Denis Leary when he did pretty much the same routine. But as you say, one man's poison. I think I did come into it with a lot of hype and I really didn't see it. Saying that - I didn't see Star Wars till I was 24 (i'm 29 now) and therefore I missed out on seeing it when I would have actually appreciated it. I didn't like it. I'm starting to sound like Jacob Dyer.

but the images aren't just lifted from the web, they have to use fairly sampled and controlled face images from verified sources.
I can't vouch for the images posted above (though they do look right), but every face study I've ever seen goes to enormously elaborate lengths to ensure that their research is valid and therefore publishable in a peer reviewed journal.

He was a tragic figure in real life
He had an arrow through the hand from the war with Indians, further disabled his arm in the Gettysburg and subsequently had to have his leg amputated after the battle of Chickamauga. HE had to be literally strapped onto his horse.
Described as 'All of the lion and none of the fox', he lost nearly all his army in the battle of Nashville, whereupon 'His sturdy visage assumed a melancholy appearance, and for a considerable time he sat on his horse and wept like a child.'

The Great Crepitation Contest of 1946
Found this via a mention on the Wikipedia flatulence humour page. Very funny, especially the corpsing. Like a '40s safe-for-work Derek and Clive
"He's stripped from the waist up and wears tight-fitting trunks of powder blue trimmed with scarlet. These trunks are similar to those worn by wrestlers with one important difference: there's a hole about six inches in diameter removed from the seat. This, of course, has been done for obvious reasons. This symmetrical aperture is called the 'fenetre du breeze' - literally translated meaning 'the zephyr window'. Mr. Boomer's fenetre du breeze has a scarlet trim around its perimeter giving a very provocative air to this genial Australian backside."
