Bored, bored, bored.
This week is dragging big-time. I am off to see my pal's new child this evening and have a curry whilst I am about it. Thought you'd like to know this.

Who is your favourite painter of all time and why?

NB anyone saying 'Jacko from 'Brush Strokes'' is
a) old, and
b) looking for a smack in the fucking mouth. JEFF.

Van Dyke
there's a tiny little painting of his on the second floor of Dublins gallery and it literally blew me away.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:08, Reply)
Oh it 'literally' did, eh?
Where did it blow you to? Or did it 'blow you away' in the manner of a gangland slaying? Are you posting from beyond the grave?

Are you a....a.....ZOMBIE????
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:11, Reply)
It litterally did, it was so random.

(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:12, Reply)
I think mine might be Caravaggio.
He was a right character as well. He was extremely 'rock'n'roll' for his day.

I love the lighting of his paintings. I am also a huge fan of Rick Griffin.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:09, Reply)
Caravaggio is the master.
Light, shadow, naturalism and a healthy contempt for the church. A print of 'David with the Head of Goliath' hangs on the wall of my office at home.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:23, Reply)
Caravaggio?
He did have a good World Cup, and looked good for Chelsea last season.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:25, Reply)

Rick Griffin?

Typo there Monts, surely you mean Nick Griffin?
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:32, Reply)
He meant Rick Rubin.

(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:35, Reply)
Hahah
Actully Mouse and Kelley, and Nigel Waymouth are also favourites.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:47, Reply)
Caravaggio is fantastic

Isn't he a doctor in Holby?

Does this answer have to be artists who only used paint
or are we allowed to talk about artists who work in other mediums?

I bet galloway says "war crimes" at least once
and campbell refers to galloway pretending to be a cat.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:17, Reply)
They're far too predictable
I might just make it up in my head instead of watching it. Galloway and Campbell are such cunts.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:22, Reply)
The clue is in the word 'painter'.

(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:30, Reply)
But I don't have a favourite painter and I wanted permission to gush about other artists.

(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:34, Reply)
Well unlucky.

(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:46, Reply)
It's fine, I'll just talk about them on Twitter instead.

(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:52, Reply)
Right Now, I'm enjoying George Grosz.
Its the sort of painting I would try to do at school. Which is why I had to give up art early.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:13, Reply)
Painter?!
I don't have a favourite painter. I don't care about painters. There are some that are talented, sure, and some pieces of art that I like, but I don't have a favourite painter.

To put this into perspective for you Monty, what's your favourite video game design studio?
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:14, Reply)
I would say Valve
but I'm fickle and they take too long.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:16, Reply)
Valve are consistently good, but do take their time
Mine's Looking Glass/Irrational Games, if only for System Shock 2 and the Bioshock games.

I fucking love Fable so much.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:24, Reply)
Fable disappointed me
As did 2. Not played 3 yet, but Molyneux has a tendency to hype the fuck out of his games, then say "oh, we had to take certain features out unfortunately". Why's that, Pete? Because they probably aren't fucking possible?!
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:37, Reply)
3 is good, but fucks up halfway through.

also known as 'How to wreck your joystick in an afternoon'
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:55, Reply)
that's why you needed a Cruiser
even when they did eventually break they could be fixed by using Lego and bits of eraser to hold the microswitches in place.

Hmm
I'm a fan of Henderson Cisz. I have one of his prints in my room. I just like the picture as a whole, it's a New York one, I'd quite like to get one of his London ones. But they are expensive and I think I've used up all my important birthdays :p

Annoyingly I almost bought one of his "island" (not this one but similar) prints a while back but couldn't justify the £200 at the time, can I find anywhere to buy it from now? No. No I can not.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:15, Reply)
Oh if I had a free £1200
I'd buy this

An original piece of art doesn't appear on the list at all.

Original art is very high on my list!
I live very close to here www.wills-art.com/ which is chock full of wonderful stuff that even with affordable in the company name I cannot afford!
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:26, Reply)
I know it's an investment and all that
But it just doesn't interest me. Like I said, I like B&W photographs of natural settings (waterfalls, forests, beaches etc), but I can pick those up cheap in Ikea.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:28, Reply)
But then your house will look like everybody elses!
the investment thing is secondary, I love knowing that I have the only one of certain things, makes it special like
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:30, Reply)
I think the appeal for original art is you know under the paint there will be layers of stuff that has been painted over
changed around and more of a depth to a real painting than you can ever get from a print.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 15:33, Reply)
*shrugs* none of that appeals to me

Hi Dr Tugnut,
It went alright, I got there, they made me drink this stuff that was like water for an hour, made me strip down to my pants and shoes, gave me a canular, injected some stuff into me that made me.
Then strapped me onto a tray on my stomach and put me through a tunel that I just about fitted in, and injected more stuff while telling me to breath differently.

I kept on getting vibrating and warm feelings and I nearly fell asleep towards the end.

then I approve of your choice
Every so often I decorate my kitchen cupboards with art postcards to cheer me up whilst I am in there. I've had Mucha, vintage adverts, and those travel posters. I should really clean my cupboard fronts and put something new up.

I had them professionally framed
the posters were dirt cheap, the frames...not so

art deco art is ok
I can't fucking stand most of the furniture though. particularly that mirrored stuff.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 16:00, Reply)
I love the simple elegance of it
but saying that, I wouldn't decorate my house art deco. It's probably more suited to large 1920's hotels.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 16:03, Reply)
I think it is more the choice of materials
the really shiny orange wood with all the grain showing just doesn't appeal. Or the horrible horrible mirrored stuff.
(, Thu 20 Jan 2011, 16:05, Reply)
my brother's house is 1920's
They had loads of lovely original furniture. Now they have 3 kids so it's all given way to plastic toys and shite

Actually now i remember their xmas present to me is an old photo of the inside of a theatre from the 1920's with the lovely old seats etc. It's stunning.

Some of the buildings are awful, have you seen the hoover building (aka the tesco building) on the a40? It is the only grade one listed art deco building in the uk and... Well, i'd nuke it.

I sold something on eBay last month, then the bloke said don't post it til mid January cos he was off on holiday, he then contacted me a couple days back and said post it to Norway for him. After telling him to do one and that he could pay for the postage (it's about twenty quid) he's put a claim in through eBay. Now my Paypal is stuffed. I was distinctly underwhelmed by the Sistine Chapel. In fact by the whole of the Renaissance stuff at the Vatican. After the first 100 pictures of bearded cunts in robes being awed by the power of the fucking Lord it starts to wear a little thin. By the time you reach the chapel it's a case of 'yes, very good, Biblical scene blah blah'.

I had a wank into the font.

I've never travelled there, when we were in Italy, Rome was going through a heatwave, so we decided against it

I'm just commenting on what I saw, we didn't go sightseeing except for a couple hours on the last day when we had a bit of time to kill. I stand by my point, a lot of it is a shithole. Some of the architecture there was stunning, mind boggling even, but from walking round most of the streets I thought it was really run down, dirty and horrible.
