Scaryduck has done a book.
Good for him, I wish I had the motivation. I even done a purchase of it which I will read in due course and I will not review because a) I can't be bothered and 2) there are many people out there who believe their opinions matter more than mine. If it's really good I will pass it on to my friends, if its shite I won't.
My question is this:
Another B3TA bloke done a book a while ago and got hounded off of the site for trying to promote it on the site. It was a major bone of contention at the time. This time another B3TA bloke done a book and its been in the newsletter and whatnot and its gone by without a comment. (This is not yet the question, just the preamble)
What the fuck is up with that shit? (this is the question)
What if I was to done a book? Would I be exalted in the newsletter or castigated on /talk? (This is the follow up)
What is the accepted criterion? (This is a semantically questionable question posed only to add another line break and piss off the purists)
I have no emotional connection to either party, I'm just wondering why it's ok for one and not for another.

do not boil wash
It might help your argument if you linked to evidence of the advertising campaigns applied by both parties.
Scaryduck has been here for years and helps out with the site.
Was the other person similarly community spirited or just here to spam their product?

that Figmaus is talking about apeloverage. Having been a member of b3ta and stalwart of /QotW for years, he mentioned on /OT that he'd self-published a book, and thereby attracted the inexplicable ire of a handful of people who seem to think that /QotW and /OT are their personal demesne, and that every other user must conform to their unclear, shifting, pusillanimous, ungrammatical, and generally witless standards. Eventually, he decided that, if he couldn't post without attracting whole threads of people telling him he and his book were shit, he wasn't going to post any more at all. So he doesn't.

Maybe I should just stop frequenting qotw, it holds very little interest these days anyway and seems to be populated more and more by spiteful children. I'd like to join in on the main board, but i have little or no artistic talent so I don't bother.
Perhaps I should resume lurkerage.

but you don't necessarily need artistic talent to make things that are funny

I tend to stick to board and links as they are usually quite fluffy.
Artistic talent doesn't matter - if you have a good idea, that will usually shine through.
There is always the block button, too - which used well should allow you to see a version of QOTW that you want.

the difference is scaryduck is a much larger contributor to the site, with a couple thousand posts and he's donated, so if he wants to come along and say "hey by the way, i done a book guys check it out" it's fine, because it's kind of like telling your mates.
if someone comes along with a shiny new account and starts posting about his book, or even a 3 year old account with only 11 posts on, it's gonna seem like he's just using b3ta as a platform cos it's a bit popular.

so it would be a bit mean of us not to pimp his book when he asks.
How someones project goes down on the boards is beyond our control.

People on here were very kind about my book and several even bought it, despite it being of a very niche interest.

and had about 1 person telling me to fuck off against about 20 people giving nice comments, and about 300 people not giving a toss either way. This is as it should be.

I think a lot of b3ta success/flaming is about timing

It depends on who reads the posts, their attitudes, and whether they can be arsed to publish them. The site owners have safeguards to prevent us being overrun with spam but if a regular member wants to post an ad for a book then it will and should be commented on just like any other work presented to us on here. I think, "got hounded off the site" is a little strong. Only mods can ban and as far as I know this person was not banned, therefore left voluntarily. Oh and you state that your criticism of our behaviour applies to /talk and QOTW. So why do you direct it at /board and not mention it on the other two?
And you say you have no emotional connection to either party. Do you have any unemotional connection? Just askin'

No I have no connection of any kind to either.
I wasn't criticising anyone, I was merely making an observation and was wondering why there was such a vast difference between two so seemingly similar events.
I was a little drunk when I made the original post and there may have been an element of being a cock involved, for which I apologise. I posted on main board because I thought there would be a much higher chance of getting a sensible response and an actual answer to the question as opposed to trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls.

You just lost all credibility man. Still you could be a lot worse. Just relax, It'll all be fine.
Ob and "At work all day" would have been more impressive if you'd stopped on the way home to buy a Big Issue from one of us. Thanks for replying.
