I think taking back control will finally give britain full freedom of its own economic destiny. Brexit is a great thing
with that freedom it should negotiate access to EU markets for fish exports in return for allowing some fishing by the EU of its territorial waters. This could be part of some major trade, taxation and working rights agreement with its close european neighbouring markets made in Britain's interest for all industries, allowing it to effectively compete with NAFTA and China as part of a major trading bloc, and share the cost of administration and regulation

So
if that were to happen it could be part of a larger framework and we could end up with some kind of bilateral agreement with the EU where goods and services are traded without hindrance and, for example, shellfish can be quickly transported to the EU without having to go through stringent border checks, a sort of customs zone if you will. Eventually, if the deal is good enough, this would be tarrif free and some kind of common market could be negotiated?
I guess that would be the logical end goal if we want prosperity.

Absolutely. And then maybe after a few years of that you could find that in order to maintain the deal they decide they need supremacy over your courts and the ability to make laws for you. In your own interests you understand.
( , Thu 29 Apr 2021, 9:32, Share, Reply)
they decided?
EU law only has effect when enacted by a domestic Act of British Parliament, I'm afraid. But I'm sure you haven't been led into thinking otherwise by jingoistic brexiters who misunderstand the supremacy of British Parliament to legislate.
Of course, most of these wonderful trade deals that Johnson thinks will eventuate have mechanisms where countries agree to be bound by common rules and often abide by independent courts of arbitration as part of joining. Sound familiar?

Great. Another 'objective' pro-remain analysis from the BBC
Whatever. There's pros/cons of being/not being in the EU.
The BBC view is always a sneery: Here's Brexit and things we think have gone wrong. There's no neutrality as the BBC is pro-remain.
There is no balance or counterpoint. There's never been a view on the downside(s) of the EU.

why continued membership of the EU was a good idea?
If you're scared of change and thinking for yourself that's fine. Order some blankets from IKEA and hide under them.
No-one has ever stated the eventual direction of the EU. Its eventual goal. And end point. And what life will be like then. Blind acceptance of the EU is mindless.

Hey, you seem to be a thick cunt. Let me help you with that.
Here are the main reasons why continued membership of the EU would have been a good idea for us, and remains a good idea for the remaining members.
Peace:
Specifically for us, Brexit invites a return to civil war AKA the 'Irish Troubles.' It also weakens our ties with those who have been our fiercest rivals in the past, increasing the risk of war in Europe overall. It also invites Russia to take the piss even more than it did when we were backed up by our tougher allies.
Prosperity:
Frictionless trade, free movement of goods, services and people as part of the largest free trade zone in the world. All gone. For cheaper TimTams, whatever they are.
Influence:
We used to have it. Now we are nothing more than a loudmouth shitcountry, subservient to just about everyone because Brexit forced us to abdicate our leadership role in world affairs. Because of fish that we don't eat, or something.
Freedom:
Before we had our European citizenship taken from us against our will, we had more rights and freedoms than we do now. The tories want to remove even more, ostensibly to prevent prisoners from voting, but it will remove the most basic and fundamental human rights from all of us. For what? So we can send kippers through the mail.

Seeing as you're so well informed
present the top 3 downsides to continued EU membership?
Out of all the news organisations you've managed to name 3 people who gave views against the EU. Considering the absolute bias of the BBC (and C4 as well) these are outliers.
Getting shouty and sweary doest make you right. It just means you've been sucking at the teat of ignorance for too long.

I am well informed
I've been exposed to Boris Johnson, Kate Hoey, Jeremy Dyson, Jacob Rees Mogg, Bill Cash basically every time I've watched the news on a TV any interview has had to have balance. I know their options, I heard their arguments and I clearly wasn't alone as 52% of the people who voted to leave the EU.
The idea that nobody was able to put a point of view across in favour of leave the EU is beyond stupid and you know it. You're just an annoying cunt spaffing out a tragic cry wank of nonsense on the thread here because ... well. I don't know.
The only reason I'm replying is because this is the spiritual home of Buffy's swearing keyboard and the refuge of the portmeanteu insult you utter shitcunt. I like insulting you. It's enjoyable. I don't expect to change your point of view, I don't expect to change anyone's - this is the interweb, that shit doesn't happen.
I'm not going to do your "research" for you, go on YouTube and find a nice video yourself.

You know the biggest shit about leaving the EU?
I have always wanted to spend some of my retirement in Europe. Maybe a year in Spain, then another year in Italy. Not a fucking option now is it? Healthcare for a retiree? Nop. Ain't gonna happen. Pension? Leave the UK for a couple of months and it no longer tracks inflation. Want to spent more than 3 months in the EU at one time? Fuck off. I may even have wanted to work in Europe at some point, now remote working's so much easier but no. Bank that operates right across Europe? Nop. Can't do that now because BLUE FUCKING PASSPORTS UUuuUUuuUUuuuUuHhhhHHHHHgghnnnnnnandiv'espunkedonmybluepassportiloveyouuunigel.....

been a while since we had a pro brexiter arcing up. I was getting nostaligic
Maybe, and I'll just put this wild possibility out there, that the reason that the "brexit was a fairly stupid and damaging thing for britain to do" view is held by so many of what I'd broadly call the well-educated class of commentators, economists and academics, is not because of a nefarious media conspiracy of bias against brexit, but because it actually was a stupid, costly and damaging thing to do with few of the promised benefits in that pesky thing called reality. That Farage, rather than being an outlier, was one of the very few articulate pro-brexit advocates suitable to be on camera, so that's why they kept plonking him there. I'd also posit that you focussing on perceived bias rather than the failure of brexit to live up to the promises it made fishing communities is a displacement activity to avoid facing the consequences of your views, shooting the messenger when you don't like the message

Good take
not enough swearing though. I like profanities.
I heard that one of the reasons Farage got so much air time is he really is a great communicator. If you want a quote he'll give you the opinion you need exactly how you need it. An alternative POV for a minster? Nigel's your man. Keep it to 20 seconds? Done. He's an editors dream.
Most of the time the BBC don't care about the politics being put across as long as they counter the other person they've got taking place. They just want someone to interview who will speak clearly, concisely, on the subject they need covering providing a counter to the other person for legal reasons and if they can turn up on time, sober, with a decent tie that doesn't phase on camera and they don't smell too bad or pat the cameraman on the bum TOO MUCH then they'll get used again, and again and again.

Post office scandal
We've all heard about the Office Scandal in the UK where postmasters were accused, jailed, had their livelihood's taken off them, lost their house, etc etc. One of these postmasters is a friend of mine who ended up spending time in prison through no fault of his own.(in his 70's!) Because of the way the legal system works in this case their compensation will be taken up by their costs. Any signature to this cause will be much appreciated and when you read it you will see how corrupt the current inquiry all sounds. Any help will be much appreciated.

But during his star-studded life, he also managed to find time to get arrested and become a sex offender. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzgj2VndmDk

for fucks sake, that's only a few years older than me, I'm feeling WAY better about myself. I mean if my parents who are knocking on the door of their 70s looked like that I'd be hovering over them with a defibrillator.

I think of it like a huge concert crowd, with everybody shouting out their opinions and desperately trying to get others to listen to them and being ignored. And there's one host who walks around and says "hey, you're famous, you can speak into the microphone". Perhaps I'm missing something but I can't be arsed finding out

Yeah. The character limitation does go a long way in reining in the worst excesses of long winded cunts though.

lovely bit of kit
seeing that led me down one rabbit hole, as it does.
I was looking at the frequency tables of hiragana characters gawron.sdsu.edu/crypto/japanese_models/hir_freq.html, and there's quite a long tail of rarely used characters. When you throw in katakana and the bazillion kanji characters it must have made the keyboard layout above quite challenging. They often use gojūon for laying out characters by phonomes similar to an alphabet grid, but this would be inefficient as the machine above shows, scrolling around for each character. Still as with qwerty, people take familiarity over efficiency but having to learn something new. Interestingly (or probably not), another study shows high frequency characters have been stable for 50 years, but low frequency character usage seems to change dramatically with time, perhaps in response to shifting cultural usage.

Pepsi logo redesign strategy from 2008
So much design-speak bollocks. By the end I can’t work out if it’s trying to prove to me that 9/11 was an inside job because of ancient symbols or redesigning a popular soft-drink’s logo

Reminded of this by Toyah below
Well I dreamed there was an island
That rose up from the sea.
And everybody on the island
Was somebody from TV.
And there was a beautiful view
But nobody could see.
Cause everybody on the island
Was saying: Look at me! Look at me!
Look at me! Look at me!
