Has anybody here been to auschwitz and birkenau?
I went when i toured round europe after uni...
grim but something that needs to be seen...

...also went to the ruins of several of the extermination camps like Sobibor, not much left there now as they were much smaller, much easier to demolish and were running on what was basically a skeleton crew (boom boom...no, but really) as they didn't have to keep anyone there. Only reason Auschwitz I and II are so famous is because they were work camps and were still taking huge numbers of people right up 'til the end of the war, so they actually have survivor accounts.
Couldn't go to quite a few of them, but went to the mass grave shooting sites where the rest of my family dug and were then executed. The soil around the pits was very, very black, but the trees seemed happy. I like the trees.
Weirdly, my cousins' old house is now an STA centre

Oswiecsiem or something in Polish, went there back in the early 90's. Quite chilling. I found it unreal that they had turned it into almost a theme park - there was a fast food joint being built when I was there. It brought the reality of the whole horribleness to me, I was surprised how upsetting I found it as I'm normally cynical. what's an STA centre?
( , Wed 30 Jun 2010, 11:43, Reply)

they are used as the example because to the quality of what remains, they raise the issue.
Auschwitz particularly because it basically has it "all"..
anyway.. gives me the chills thinking about it again.

Everyone Draw Mohamed Day...
Its a 'it didnt happen' event. A kneejerk reaction.
Short story:
Muslims pissed over Draw Mohamed day. Get page taken down and an apology from the author.
Muslims put up this page, campaign AGAINST free speech also, yet it is free speech which is allowing the page to stay up.
I would like to say 'petty tittle tattle' but better not.
( , Wed 30 Jun 2010, 10:46, Reply)

At a university in America (cant remember which one) the kids were drawing Mohamed (the prophet) as stick men with smiley faces, and Mohamed written underneath. The muslims were goring around these, putting boxing gloves on the hands and writing 'Ali' after the name.
Point = gotten.

( , Wed 30 Jun 2010, 9:56, Reply)

This whole album has me yearning for some intangible point in my past.
It reminds me of being a child.
It's so weird that a sound not associated with childhood (unlike say a nursery rhyme) can do that to you.

It's shot from outside a mountain hut in Slovenia called Koa v Krnici. We walked up there in the hope of staying over and climbing Skrlatica the next day, but it was shut so I set up the camera and went for a walk instead.
Unfortunately being a total numpty I left an ancient 4gb memory card in there and it filled up after about 820 frames. I would probably have got about twice as much if that hadn't happened.
( , Wed 30 Jun 2010, 1:05, Reply)

What software do you use to combine the images into the video? Whenever I have tried I can never get short enough delays between images
( , Wed 30 Jun 2010, 9:37, Reply)

first you have to make sure the images are small enough, and all numbered. ffmpeg has a stupid max size limitation, so it will break if you use max camera resulution.
I used imagemagic/mogrify to do the resizing, but anything that can batch process should do it. Then something like:
ffmpeg -i %d.jpg -sameq -s vga -r 20 output.avi
%d.jpg just tells it to look for numbered files
-sameq tells it to maintain image quality & not go blocky
-r 20 = 20fps
-s hd480 sets a resolution
etc.
You can add audio the same way, but I couldn't tell you how off the top of my head as it is a bitch to get working and it always takes me about 20 minutes to figure it out.
( , Wed 30 Jun 2010, 9:50, Reply)

If you haven't seen it I also recommend tears of the black tiger, a Korean Spaghetti Western.
It had me in stitches, they play it straight (like Clint Eastwood), but have the most outrageous camp costumes and sets. Camera work clichés are great too ^^
